The Serpent & the Wings of Night
The Serpent & the Wings of Night | Carissa Broadbent
The first book in the Wall Street Journal bestselling Crowns of Nyaxia series by Carissa Broadbent. Filled with heart-wrenching romance, dark magic, and bloodthirsty intrigue perfect for fans of From Blood and Ash and A Court of Thorns and Roses. For humans and vampires, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always always guard your heart. The adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, Oraya carved her place in a world designed to kill her. Her only chance to become something more than prey is entering the Kejari: a legendary tournament held by the goddess of death herself. But winning wont be easy amongst the most vicious warriors from all three vampire houses. To survive, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival. Everything about Raihn is dangerous. He is a ruthless vampire, an efficient killer, an enemy to her fathers crown... and her greatest competition. Yet, what terrifies Oraya most of all is that she finds herself oddly drawn to him. But theres no room for compassion in the Kejari. War for the House of Night brews, shattering everything that Oraya thought she knew about her home. And Raihn may understand her more than anyone but their blossoming attraction could be her downfall, in a kingdom where nothing is more deadly than love.

Okay so I‘m not sure I liked the ending here … I mean come on really … okay okay I know I have to read the next book in the series to come to a final determination on this one… hopefully the second book will clear up most or all of my questions

I can‘t resist an enemies to lovers trope, even in a fantasy novel. It‘s my favorite. I LOVED this book. I‘ve read some great books this year, but I can‘t remember the last one that I could not put down. I read over half of it after work tonight. It is well-written, a little spicy, action-packed, and compulsively readable. I just hate that book 2 is in KU. I will not give Bezos my book $, so I have to wait for my local indie to open tomorrow. 😭

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Damn! This was great! Maybe just the right time for me, bc I was in the mood for action and drama and tension and this book delivered on every level. Vampires done differently enough to where it feels new. Really likable characters, flaws and all! Slow burn romance and just enough trope. This was def it!!!! Highly recommend to any fantasy/romantasy reader!

My husband poked me last night and whispered “Litsy” and pointed to our sleepy kitten Booker, who‘s really living up to his name 😸 #BookerCat

Just finished this and it was exactly what I was looking for - page turning, steamy with lots of twists and gory violence! Some of the world-building is a little flimsy but I‘ll forgive it. I love romantasy but am wary about what I pick up since it‘s such a trend, but this one was good.

2-5 Jul 24 (audiobook)
Silly but very entertaining nonsense about a human child who is raised by a vampire king and enters into a vampire tournament (kejari) with the prize being a wish granted by the vampire goddess. Lots of the usual vampire tropes and it basically followed the rules.
For some reasons I find vampires far sexier than fairies and this story actually held my interest and sucked me into listening to the next in the series.

Yes! This is one of my top books of the year. All the feels of Fourth Wing, with a definite likeness to The Hunger Games. You just need to sprinkle in vampires and some crazy magic skills and you get this book.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'm not even taking a break, I'm starting second in the series as soon as I can! I'm crossing my fingers that the series doesn't lead me towards a downward spiral of disinterest as some tend to do. I'm optimistic though. 🤞

willaful That often happens to me with fantasies of this type. Love the first book and then lose interest. 5mo

Oraya was taken in as an adopted daughter by the Nightborn Vampire King. A once in every one hundred year trial gives her the opportunity to step into power without being changed into a vampire. She has to survive four months in the Moon Palace with all other contestants out for her blood, literally. This was a pleasant surprise and I really liked the story. Closest thing I‘ve found to ACOTAR vibes!

I enjoyed this book so much more than I thought I would. I just recently got into fantasy so I was worried this book was overhyped. I read it in two days because I couldn‘t put it down. I definitely plan to read the other books in the series because I have to find out what happens next.

4.8 ⭐️ well damn… I like that a lot better than I thought would. But seriously, what is up with all these cliffhangers. Mind you, this one‘s not as bad as some of the others have been as of late. Anyways, this is a great book. Definitely got some action, some minor romance, and like one spicy scene. But the betrayal… wow, little intense.

THIS WAS SO FUN! What an amazing, thrilling, magical, terrifying, heartbreaking adventure. I definitely felt SJM vibes throughout the book. The main character reminds me to much of Aelin in TOG! Loved this and can‘t wait to read the next one ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

41/2 stars 🌟 from me the last missing half a star to make it a whopper of a 5 is A. I‘m being far more selective this year with my 5s, yes it‘s the first romatasy Iv really enjoyed since the ACOTAR series, however the last 150 pages just too too long it took forever to get there and no where near enough spice 🌶️so here‘s hoping book 2 picks up the pace or I won‘t be continuing ; our time is precious we can only read so much !

Breanne1 I had high 🌶️ hopes for this one….sigh 7mo
Kimberlone I read this last month and have already completely forgotten what happens…I was very meh on it and decided not to continue with the series. For something that was advertised in the ACOTAR realm, you‘re right - not very spicy (at least for what I was expecting) 7mo
Bookbuyingaddict @Breanne1 @Kimberlone so many are touted as the next acotar aren‘t they 😩and these hardbacks aren‘t cheap ! I‘m going to ask my library to order in the second in the series for me . I did enjoy it a lot more than blood and ash I haven‘t done throne of glass or crescent city series yet have you both ? Happy 😃 weekend x x x 7mo
Kimberlone @Karons1 honestly, I‘ve realized the Maas-verse isn‘t really for me. I read the first two ACOTAR, the first ~3 TOG, and I couldn‘t even finish the first Crescent City. I keep trying each series but don‘t get far before losing interest 🤷🏽‍♀️ 7mo

I liked this book. It was a very quick and easy read.
Vampires meets Hunger Games.
I liked the characters Raihn and Oraya. This isn't a book I would boast about, but I would recommend it to someone looking for an easy romantsy to read.

It came to in the end, tho the earlier 2/3 was all rough. Between the trials blurring by (couldn‘t tell you what they were now), action too quick, and just the weird feeling I got. Praga was well written in her rage. Raihn is so complex. New to vampires, so that may have done it. Could‘ve easily forgot there were even vampires. Felt glossed over for it being. Spice chapter caught me off guard. I‘m pretty invested politically. That END.

I kept seeing this series hyped for romantasy readers and thought I‘d give it a chance. It was free on Kindle Unlimited, so I signed up for a free trial to try it out. It wasn‘t any worse than the average romantasy (it felt very ACOTAR meets Hunger Games), but I found its utter mediocrity and tropey-ness to be a turn off. I skimmed A LOT to finish this one, and won‘t be continuing with the sequel, despite a vague interest in knowing the ending.

Bookish_Gal I‘m about to write my review, and I‘m lost as to how to go about it. The ending saved it, politically, though it dragged long for me. 8mo

This was amazing!!! I get why it's been everywhere. Oraya is a human who is the adopted daughter of the vampire king. She joins a competition where the winner gets a wish granted to them by the goddess of death. Raihn is one of her competitors, but they decide to work together to get further in the competition and of course, they fall in love.

Romantasy is top of mind for many of us right now. With that being said....THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE! This book is everything I want and love in this genre. A strong FMC, a fantastic love interest, vampires, family drama and a war that could could destroy it all. The plot is smart and moves at a good pace, the dialogue and banter is some of the best, and the world building is well done without overwhelming the storyline.

Starting off 2024 VERY strong with this 5 star book. WOW! Oraya is a viper made to feel like pray- a human in a kingdom of vampires. She enters a 4 month long death match for power and builds an uneasy alliance with a vampire named Raihn. Factions, politics, and violence are their only lifeline.

Broadbent‘s writing was truly astonishing. She swept me into her world and I pictured every detail. Truly a fantastic work! Cobb‘s performance is A+!

I think I had too high expectations for this book as it kept popping up as a recommendation for me based on my most recent reads and boy was it missing a little bit of the spice factor 🌶️

I LOVED this book. One of my favorite things about it is the setting. Weird, i know. It takes place in the desert which sounds blah but the author built an incredible world and I am so excited to explore more of it in the next book. Don‘t get me wrong the rest of the story is ah-mazing but it is so refreshing to get out of “lush forests” and “sprawling gardens”. The range of emotions I felt through the book is incredible and I 100% recommend.

I loved the complexity of the characters. The twist at the end was delightful though subtly foreshadowed. Absolutely to recommend.

To gain the power to change her life, Oraya has entered herself into the Kejari Trials. But what she may learn in the trials will change everything.

I‘m torn on this. It had some fascinating characters, really interesting magic, some great world building while staying a very focused story on Oraya, & some twists. But I wasn‘t a big fan of the romance, & this felt stretched out because the author wanted 2 books, with a sequel bait end. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

BooksNBowls I loved this book! Carissa Broadbent is my new favorite author! Oraya was the perfect heroine, both bad ass and vulnerable at the same time. She had some amazing one liners that really moved me. Raihn is so sweet, I loved how gentle he was with Oraya despite how hard she tries to make herself towards others. They balanced each other out and I really enjoyed their banter and how their relationship developed as the book progressed. 2y
BooksNBowls I guess we‘ll see in the next book if she can manage to forgive Raihn. Which brings me to her and Vincent‘s relationship. It seems so much more complex now that we know the truth and hopefully in the sequel we will learn more about what exactly happened and why he did the things he did! Mische was also one of my favorites! I hope she‘s in the next book too! 2y

I stayed up way too late to finish this one 🙃
The hype for this is warranted. It grabs your attention and doesn't let up setting the stage for future books to come (I read there will be 5!) The comparisons to Sarah J Maas also make sense. Maybe it was poor timing but reading this while reading A Court of Wings and Ruin probably wasn't the best idea. I love Raihn, but he is no Rhys....just saying. 🤷‍♀️

KateReadsYA I felt it had similarities to ACOTAR as well. Wait till you get to the last book in the series, the two main characters in that one remind @BooksNBowls and I of this books 2 love interests. This was a very entertaining paranormal fantasy/horror with romantic elements. I would describe this as a fantasy mix of Interview with the Vampire and ACOTAR, though this has far more world building the the SJM series (don‘t come after me I do like that series!)
This is the story of Oraya, a human girl adopted by the Vampire king. ⬇️

Nessavamusic She is entering an epic tournament to become a true daughter to her adopted father. However, Oraya must make an alliance with an enemy Raihn to survive. This book has so much I love and I took a while to read it as I was savoring. I look forward to continuing the story! 4.5⭐️ A couple notes CW below: (edited) 2y
Nessavamusic I believe the series overall will be a romance, but the HEA does not happen in this first book of the series, so heads up for that. There is gore and graphic violence. There is threat of rape but none on page. 2y
Bookworm_Bobbie I‘ve just finished this and loved it! I thought it was better than SJM…. 😬 2y
