White Nights
White Nights: A Thriller | Ann Cleeves
The electrifying follow up to the award-winning Raven Black Raven Black received crime fiction's highest monetary honor, the Duncan Lawrie Dagger Award. Now Detective Jimmy Perez is back in an electrifying sequel. It's midsummer in the Shetland Islands, the time of the white nights, when birds sing at midnight and the sun never sets. Artist Bella Sinclair throws an elaborate party to launch an exhibition of her work at The Herring House, a gallery on the beach. The party ends in farce when one the guests, a mysterious Englishman, bursts into tears and claims not to know who he is or where he's come from. The following day the Englishman is found hanging from a rafter, and Detective Jimmy Perez is convinced that the man has been murdered. He is reinforced in this belief when Roddy, Bella's musician nephew, is murdered, too. But the detective's relationship with Fran Hunter may have clouded his judgment, for this is a crazy time of the year when night blurs into day and nothing is quite as it seems. A stunning second installment in the acclaimed Shetland Island Quartet, White Nights is sure to garner American raves for international sensation Ann Cleeves. This series is the basis for the hit BBC show Shetland, starring Douglas Henshall, which attracted over 12 million viewers in its first two nights on the air.

I think I‘d rather experience summer nights with little darkness than winter days with little sunlight.
#setinyrfaveseason #newyearnewbooks

MicheleinPhilly I‘ve experienced the former many times visiting Sweden in summer. It messes with you big time. Blackout curtains and sleep masks help but no one tells the birds that it is 2 a.m. and to please STFU. Well, I did but they didn‘t listen. 11mo

At the opening of an art exhibition a man bursts into tears in front of one of the pictures, then says he has no memory of anything before seeing the picture. Nobody knows who he is but the next morning he is found hanged.

Intriguing mystery, interesting setting and characters.

❓❓❓ for my recent #IRLBookClub Discussion.

You're traveling to Shetland: Do you take the 1Hr ✈ from Mainland to Shetland or 12 HR 30 M Overnight ⛴ ?

Rereading. It‘s been 4 years since I read this. And I'd forgotten that ending! Also how all the middle aged people were having sex. Off page but still it was there. Yay! Thanks to my friend Haley that's also reading, I now see the Bella Sinclair as Shetland's Moira Rose.

Lots of character development for Inspector Perez. Setting of story during Simmer Dim when its never dark in Shetland was fascinating.

This installment of the Shetland Island series was just as enjoyable as the first. These are somewhat slow-paced books, especially for mysteries, but I actually enjoy that. It fits with the setting and the sense of deliberation and isolation that that setting brings. In this book, Cleeves also does a wonderful job describing high summer just south of the Arctic Circle, where the sun never goes down, effecting different people in different ways.⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I really like the main character of this series as well. My main complain, as always... I need a map!!

Ann Cleeves writes extremely atmospheric stores; the location is truly a character in this book. I really like Jimmie Perez and the way this book was paced. I was in the mood for a thriller more quiet and slow-burny and this fit the bill perfectly. It has been a good while since I read the first in this series but Ann Cleeves is so good, it felt like no time had passed at all. 👍🏼 #SeriesRead2021

I am now officially addicted to this series. Easily as good as the first, I was kept guessing until very, very late. I love the setting; I feel as if I could step off the ferry and find my way around. Even minor characters are well drawn. I‘m anxious now to read the next book.

No picture that really fits, so this is a shot of the mushrooms that sprang up after all the rain we had last week.

It‘s midsummer in the Shetlands, and everyone is a little out of sorts because of the nearly constant daylight. Murders occur, secrets are uncovered, and meanwhile a romance blossoms. I‘m pleased to see that the next four books are available in audio form on cloudLibrary.

Book three of #midyearrush and I might finish another depending on how the day goes.

I think I liked this one even more than the first in the series. I was definitely more satisfied with the ending. I love the Shetland setting and am almost ready to rush out and buy the next series but I should be responsible and wait to see if my sister shares my enthusiasm first and check it out from the library if she doesn‘t.

A good follow up to the first book in the Shetland Islands series. We get to know DI Perez better, even DI Taylor who came from Inverness. Again, great descriptions of the place, this time in midsummer, when the days are long, the nights are light. I didn‘t quite like the conclusion, (I think the first book is better)..regardless, it‘s an absorbing read and I will continue the series as I like the characters development.

Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻. I liked this one too ... must get to number 3 soon 5y

Well, I certainly didn‘t figure out who did it in this mystery! This second in the Shetland series (image is a map where this is set) didn‘t disappoint. Det Jimmy Perez is back at it with the overly energetic DI Taylor in tow, trying to find out who killed at least two people, and why. Reading this the last two nights made my insomnia bearable. Fingers crossed I can check out book 3 online tonight!

About a quarter of the way through this one, the second in the Shetland series. Question for anyone who‘s read the books and seen the TV series - what do you think about the adaptation? I‘ve only read and watched the first book (it‘s S2 E1 for TV) and was underwhelmed, despite liking all of the actors.

Lizpixie I do like the tv show, but yeah, it doesn‘t live up to the books at all. I think you have to see them as two completely different animals, appreciate the books for the character development & clever plots, and appreciate the show for the videography of the beautiful scenery. 5y
LauraBrook @Lizpixie Hi Friend! 🥰 That‘s what I was thinking, related things but not the same. Thanks for confirming. It was just so disappointing to watch that first story, like “wth...”?! The biggest annoyance I had was that tv made it set in the summer. The body being buried in the snow and the whole setting was so integral to the plot, and instead it‘s summer and they find her wearing a bright red coat in the middle of a beach by a main road?!?!🤦🏻‍♀️ 5y
Lizpixie The only saving grace for those episodes I think is Brian Cox as Magnus Tait. He portrays him beautifully. 5y
LauraBrook @Lizpixie He absolutely does. 5y

3⭐️ and a so-so for me. The pacing was a bit slow for me, although in a way it worked because I had a lot going on when I was reading this. The pace did mean I could pick it up and put it down relatively easily. I will likely continue the series at some point.

So, the premise sounds really good. I was hopeful. But, I was also listening to the audio, and it just couldn‘t hold my interest. I did follow enough at the start to get my little summary (and it‘s why the extra .25 stars), but it really went downhill after that, and I could rarely focus on what was going on. It makes me not want to continue the series, but I feel like I should try the 3rd one, just not on audio, and decide from there.

I am in love with this detective series! I have read 4 of them and they always keep me intrigued until the very end. Cleeves writes beautifully about the Shetland Islands north of Scotland and her characters are each so complex and human (even the smallest of them). If you are looking for a great story with characters you can follow through a series...this is it!
