The Infinity of Lists | Umberto Eco
309 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 19 to read
In the history of Western culture we find lists of saints, rosters of soldiers, catalogues of grotesque creatures or medicinal plants, and hordes of treasure. The poetics of lists can be found from Homer to Joyce, from the treasures of Gothic cathedrals to the fantastic landscapes of Bosch and cabinets of curiosities, until we get to Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst in the 20th century. This illustrated essay is accompanied by a literary anthology and a wide selection of works of art illustrating the texts presented.

Reposting this for @Andrew65 The idea is for the next 20 days post your top 20 series. So one series each day. I will have to noodle on this a bit then make my list. There are so many good series. I will have to narrow it down.

Andrew65 Me too! Got it down to 32 at the moment! Thanks for reposting. 😊👍 4y
Laughterhp Oo I wonder how many favorite series I have! 4y

#LitsyLovesLibraries #MrBooksLists

Beatlefan129 When I read this one I sobbed like a baby: 4y
ravenlee I never thought about Crime and Punishment being a tearjerker. 4y
Scochrane26 The art of racing in the rain—cried in my car to the audiobook 4y
See All 20 Comments
Butterfinger Why is Anne considered a tearjerker? Or are the three asterisks for the series? I know the last one in the series (Rilla of Ingleside) was pitiful? 4y
Butterfinger I definitely cried with the Book Thief and Anne Frank's Diary? I need to clarify. I didn't understand why Anne of Green Gables was sad? 4y
TheSpineView 4 on this list. 4y
rwmg 5 4y
BookNAround @Butterfinger When Matthew dies, I bawled like a baby. 4y
BookNAround My spoiler above is for Anne of Green Gables. 4y
Butterfinger I had forgotten @BookNAround thank you. This may have to be my choice. Apparently, it has been too long. 4y
LiteraryinLawrence What do the asterisks mean? 4y
MrBook @LiteraryinLititz , great question! It signifies that the book is an installment in a series. I usually try to pick the first book in the series, but sometimes based on the theme I‘ll pick one that falls somewhere else. I have to rely on many others for this one since I haven‘t read it (yet 😉), but the Harry Potter example is a very popular criteria choice for this particular list. (edited) 4y
MrBook @Butterfinger , I haven‘t read Anne since I was a kid, but the entire series came up regularly as such. Perhaps it‘s her situation, and perhaps later installments made readers more sad? 4y
Butterfinger @MrBook I had forgotten. This is definitely my choice. I am going to reread it. I feel like an idiot. 4y
MrBook @Butterfinger , idiot thou art not nor hath been nor shall be. 🤗 4y
Hooked_on_books I don‘t think Anna Karenina is a tear-jerker. For me, if there‘s a dog, and the dog dies, I cry. Where the Red Fern Grows was probably the first one that did that to me. Seventh grade, I believe. 4y
GatheringBooks should definitely be in there 4y
Andrew65 Read 4 of these. 4y

ljuliel Shadow Country , Tenant of Wildfell Hall , Treasure Island , Woman in White. ***. @MrBook .... just curious how does Shadow Country fit in with this category ? It doesn‘t remind me of the rest . It doesn‘t seem like it‘d fit in a Victorian book list. (edited) 4y
Scochrane26 @Christy2318 That is also my feeling about Scarlet Letter 😂 I‘ve also read Wuthering heights, Walden, Uncle Tom‘s Cabin, a Study in Scarlet, Strange Case of the Alchemist‘s Daughter, Jekyll & Hyde. If Alchemist‘s Daughter is on here, then the Lady Sherlock series & other spin-offs of Holmes should be listed. 4y
MrBook @ljuliel It takes place over the course of late 1800s and first decade of the 1900s, and the Victorian Era runs 1837-1902. I saw it on a list and thought the same, lol, but it qualifies as much of it is based on true historical events that occurred in the late era. 4y
MrBook @Scochrane26 I only have so much room on my introductory list 😆🙌🏻, and AD would be a good jumping off point for the others. 4y
ljuliel Thanks @MrBook ... I was just trying to figure out how a bunch of folks who lived back in the Everglades in the swamps would have been called a Victorian book. I guess I had a different picture of what that‘d mean. I pictured the big old houses , ladies in long pretty dresses , etc. 😊 4y
Scochrane26 @MrBook True. The Sherlock, Dracula, & Frankenstein spin-offs & retellings could be a whole list. 4y
MrBook @ljuliel 😆👏🏻🙌🏻 I hear ya! One tends to think of the British Isles, and maybe France and some other parts of Europe. I included some of the bigger and more well-known American counterparts to expand the picture a bit. 😊 4y

Possibly the most debated subgenre list, lol. An hour-long conversation at the library today 😆. Opinions are all over the map online between authors, critics, publishers, and bloggers—for example, some think Harry Potter definitely qualifies and some think absolutely not 😳🙈. #ContemporaryFantasy, #ParanormalRomance, and other sub-genres, help muddle things 😆. Well, here‘s #UrbanFantasy, for what it‘s worth.

Leftcoastzen Stout,Willeford ,and Woolrich. 5y
Hooked_on_books Do you know what your list is missing? Women. There are only 4 women listed here. Surely we can come up with more hard-boiled women authors than this. Patricia Cornwell, Sara Paretsky, Gillian Flynn, Attica Locke, etc (edited) 5y
MrBook @Hooked_on_books You‘re right 👍🏻. I‘ve noticed trends over time as I‘ve compiled my dozens and dozens of lists. This list has few women. The psychological suspense one has few men. The cozy mysteries have hardly any men at all. Sci fi is mostly men. Romance is nearly all women. Espionage/spy lit is mostly men. “Chick Lit” is mostly all women. I don‘t have an answer for it, why do you think these trends exist? (edited) 5y

Hooked_on_books I think much of it is what women have been permitted to do historically being slow to expand outward. I have a history in medicine, wherein it is typical to see many more women in nursing, pediatrics, etc, and many fewer in surgical specialties, especially neurosurgery and orthopedics. I don‘t think it‘s that women don‘t want to participate in these fields or write these kinds of books but that women “don‘t” do those things. ⬇️ (edited) 5y
Hooked_on_books Which has made it much harder for women to break into these areas. The key is to give women opportunities, support, and indeed, mentions on this kind of list, to make it more normalized. This goes for people of color as well, of course. After all, if your patrons don‘t see books by women and POCs represented on lists, they won‘t read them. And then things never improve. 5y
Hooked_on_books And there are great authors out there in every genre who are women, POCs, or both. 5y
MrBook @Hooked_on_books That makes sense to me. It‘s a good conversation to have. The unfair stereotypes hinder a great deal of artistic and broader-cultural flourishing. It‘s not right for authors to use pseudonyms on those grounds 😕. 5y
Hooked_on_books A good conversation, indeed. After all, when you‘re not the subject of something, it can be much harder to see it. Thus I can share my experiences with sexism with you to make them more visible, since I‘m female. Pseudonyms are a tough one. Historically women used them to get read at all, and I think they linger especially in those genres wherein women historically have less representation. But it‘s a tough call as to whether they hinder. 5y
Hooked_on_books This is a really interesting take on this issue in literature specifically: https://www.bustle.com/p/a-breakdown-of-by-the-book-columns-shows-that-male-auth... 5y
MrBook @Hooked_on_books I always appreciate any Litten‘s constructive input 😁🤗. I think I should repeat that more often, lol, maybe folks are hesitant to add their thoughts. 5y
Hooked_on_books That‘s too bad. I‘m never hesitant to share, though not always certain my input is appreciated! 😆 I‘m glad you‘re amenable to the conversation. I‘ve dealt with so much sexism that it‘s made me quite the ardent feminist. 5y
MrBook @Hooked_on_books I‘m always glad to hear what others have to say. Littens aren‘t belligerent, thank goodness 👍🏻👍🏻. Readers are leaders, right? 😎🙌🏻😌 5y
Hooked_on_books Totally! 5y
rwmg And it is so important to actually count. I was under the impression that I read roughly equal amounts of male and female authors but the first year I counted it was about 3 male-authored books for every female-authored book. I made a particular effort the next year to give female authors priority and got the reverse figure, but unless I make a particular effort my reading is still only 30% female-authored. 5y
