A mother must fight for her daughters life in this fierce and haunting tale of witchcraft and revenge from the author of A Haunting in the Arctic. Clem gets a call that is every mothers worst nightmare. Her nineteen-year-old daughter Erin is unconscious in the hospital after a hiking trip with her friends on the remote Orkney Islands that met a horrifying end, leaving her boyfriend dead and her best friend missing. When Erin wakes, she doesnt recognize her mother. And she doesnt answer to her name, but insists she is someone named Nyx. Clem travels the site of her daughters accident, determined to find out what happened to her. The answer may lie in a dark secret in the history of the Orkneys: a woman wrongly accused of witchcraft and murder four centuries ago. Clem begins to wonder if Erins strange behavior is a symptom of a broken mind, or the effects of an ancient curse?

I found the story interesting but questions were left unanswered, and some things just didn‘t make sense. An ancient pagan book that is supposedly cursed is somehow the connection between a 16th century woman burned at the stake, and a young woman performing a modern day pagan ritual gone wrong. I feel like the author should have stuck to one story instead of trying to combine the two. Alison‘s character is based on a real historical person.⬇️

I really enjoyed this book. It covers the lives of three women, Alison from the 1500s who is accused of witchcraft, Clem a woman from this century whose daughter has been badly burned and Erin Clem's daughter. This book covers some of the graphic history of witchcraft in the Orkney Islands as well as the power of modern-day cults and ancient curses 🖤

I loved it! I couldn't put it down. I would recommend it to anyone else interested in the plight of women thought to be witches in the 1590s Scotland. It is scary and interesting at the same time. The story goes back and forth between 1594 and the present day, and the two time periods are tied together by a creepy book.

I read this now so it wouldn‘t linger on my TBR until next October, and I really liked this witchy Scottish story. Alternating chapters between 1594 and 2024 works well for me because I can lose interest in books set early and in the last millennium. Here I was invested in how the two timelines came together and had equal interest in both stories. Also, good to be reminded how easily one can fall victim to a cult in this millennium.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This was a really interesting blend of modern-day suspense, witchcraft, and historical fiction. Brutal to read at times, and genuinely creepy at others, there is a sinister atmosphere and an undercurrent of dark magic that was unsettling, yet gripping. I appreciated that the historical storyline was based on a real woman and that it was well-researched. #BOTM

November is proving to be a difficult month. We had to make the decision yesterday for my Dad to be a dnr (do not resuscitate) His lungs are shot from years and years of smoking. 💔 If you smoke please stop!! He is being moved to a medical floor so that family can be with him more. His wife is being difficult on top of everything 😫

Thank y‘all for your kind messages, thoughts, and prayers 🙏🏻

Yet another spooky read for the spooky season! While this wasn‘t one of my favorite books, I love that much of it took place in Edinburgh, Scotland. The area fascinates me. I was lucky enough to have visited it years ago. The story went back and forth between 2 periods, one in the 1500s and one modern day. I can tell that a lot of research went into writing this book.

When she wakes she claims to be called Nyx.1594- Allison stands accused of witchcraft- and the details of the trial are horrifying. Both women have been in possession of the same book. I've recently started enjoying books on this topic. I've decided to add new genres to my reading experience. This book was very good.
Very well written and informative. The Author's Note at the end was worth reading also. I tend to recommend that when I review a book. This is no exception.

A fun, fast read effect for this time of year. Erin goes off to Orkney with friends where tragedy strikes—her boyfriend dies, her best friend disappears, & Erin wakes up in the hospital not quite herself. The story of what happens is interwoven with the story of Alison, a woman accused of witchcraft in the 16th c. Time is running out for both of them & a mysterious book with black pages may save or destroy them both. Entertaining read.
