Among the Lesser Gods | Margo Catts
post image

#MarchIntoOz #LivingInThe70s What do these books have in common besides the beautiful covers and the fact that I read, enjoyed and reviewed them? They are both set in the 1970s. Mermaids is a coming of age story & Lesser Gods is a story of coming to terms with guilt, regrets & bad decisions. 📚💙

Eggs LOVE the mermaid cover 7y
rockpools They really do have beautiful covers! 7y
Emilymdxn Can‘t even process how gorgeous they are, particularly the one on the right 7y

BooksTeasAndBookishThings I remember reading this for AR in school and it had JUST been taken out of the school because it was too controversial for elementary school kids. So, after I read it and went to take the quiz (for maybe 10 points) and it said it wasn‘t available, my teacher just asked me a few questions and gave me a 100 and told me not to tell other students about it, even though she thought it was important for kids to read. 7y
Melissa_J I remember that book well. 7y
MrBook The '70s?! Wooow, that makes you 🤔...39! 😁😇 7y
Gayan This book! And Sally J Freedman! 7y
AlaMich I had a Judy Blume boxed set. That‘s right, I was one of the cool kids!! 😎🤣🤣 7y
AlaMich And also, I love your orange phone. On my last visit out west to see my dad, I discovered that he still had the sky blue princess rotary phone from my childhood. I shipped that baby right back to my house! 7y
MaureenMc 😍 7y
Melkyl 70s flashback - I love it! 7y
Chrissyreadit We must, we must, we must increase our busts.... 7y
Chrissyreadit Because of Forever my parents rescinded my adult sticker on my library card. How was I supposed to know not ask my mom about sex? 7y
bookish_wookish That phone!! 😍 7y
Cinfhen Omg!!! Both the orange phone and your copy of Judy Blume 🙌🏻💕😀 7y
LeahBergen @LauraBeth And Blubber and Deenie? 😆 7y
LeahBergen @BooksTeasAndBookishThings That‘s crazy! We passed this book around over and over in Grade 5 (there was only one copy in our school library) and I just can‘t imagine not being able to read it back then. It was such a formative part of our childhood in my circle. 7y
LeahBergen @Melissa_J Right? 😆 7y
LeahBergen @MrBook 38, actually. Quit adding years to my age. 😂😂 7y
LeahBergen @Gayan Yes! 👍🏻 7y
LeahBergen @AlaMich I had the pink Princess phone in my room (and wish I still had it! 😂) 7y
LeahBergen @Chrissyreadit I‘ll never forget that chant! 😂😂 And yes, Forever was definitely a “teen read” - it was so shocking in its day. We were obsessed with it. 😂 7y
LeahBergen @Cinfhen 😂😂 This book made a Canadian girl want to be Jewish and live in New York (or Jersey). 7y
Chrissyreadit @LauraBeth Paula Danziger! 7y
batsy Love this cover. 7y
AlaMich @Chrissyreadit 😂😂😂 7y
RohitSawant Awesome picture! 7y
mrp27 I had the exact phone in my room but blue. 7y
LivingReflections Love the phone. Wish I had my copy of this book still! 7y
merelybookish I was reading this in the (early) 80s! 😉 But the same cover. This book is really magical. I've often wanted to re-read it but never have. I don't want to destroy the power it had in my 10 year-old life. And, Forever was totes for sleepovers. 7y
MemoirsForMe This photo brings back so many memories. 😁 7y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings I know, it was a great book for my 4th grade self. But, they just thought it was too much 🙄 7y
LitsyOwl Yes. A 70s must have. My friends and I passed it around 🦉📚 7y
LauraBeth @Leahbergen and @Chrissyreadit Blubber and Deenie! 🙌🙌 I thought for years that I had scoliosis 😂 and I was convinced I could actually sue my parents for malpractice. And every thing I learned about sex came from Forever 🤔😬😂 Here‘s to being a lifelong reader and to growing up in the 70s and 80s reading great books that helped shape us. 7y
Chrissyreadit @LauraBeth 👏🙌🙌🙌 7y
AlaMich @LauraBeth 🙌🙌 And here‘s to stifling my laughter every time I hear that there‘s a student named Ralph at my wife‘s school! 🤣🤣🤣 7y
LauraBeth @AlaMich Ralph! 😂😂 7y
LeahBergen @batsy I do, too. 😄 7y
LeahBergen @rohit-sawant Thanks! ❤️ 7y
LeahBergen @mrp27 😆 I had to “teach” my nephew how to use this phone and he laughed and laughed over how long it took to dial a number. 😂 7y
LeahBergen @LivingReflections They‘re both classics. 😆 7y
LeahBergen @merelybookish I know! I peeked into it a bit and read a few parts. 7y
LeahBergen @LitsyOwl ❤️❤️ 7y
LeahBergen @LauraBeth @Chrissyreadit @AlaMich Ralph!! 😂😂 I forgot about his Ralph! Oh, man... 😂😂 7y
EvieBee Wow! 🧡🧡🧡🧡 7y
mrp27 @LauraBeth Cheers to Blume and all the others that shaped us! 🍾🍾 7y
Reviewsbylola The storyline about getting your period was everything to me. 😂😂 7y
AlaMich @LeahBergen 😩 about the rotary phone 👵🏻 7y
Sace Ohhhh. I want to go back and read that. 7y
Chrissyreadit @LeahBergen I totally forgot til you posted! I thought all boys named their penis...probably another question I should not have asked my mom. 6th grade and Catholic. I still remember her look of horror! 7y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola Right? We were all transfixed in my little group of friends. 😆 7y
LeahBergen @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I think I will! 👍🏻 7y
LeahBergen @Chrissyreadit 😂😂 Your poor (shocked) mother! 7y

Watergate: A Novel | Thomas Mallon

Pickpick

I read this book several years ago and it taught me so much about watergate. It is a work of historical fiction and lays out the saga of watergate in a really compelling way. I was totally fascinated and hadn‘t realized before how it had all slowly dripped out and how long the scandal went on for before it became “Watergate.” I also recommend slate‘s podcast on the topic - slowburn. #livinginthe70s #historyrepeats #recommendsday #marchintooz

Polaroids: Mapplethorpe | Whitney Museum of American Art, Sylvia Wolf

Polaroids is a great book because it gives you a glimpse of an emerging artist #livinginthe70s . Just Kids is equally as fascinating for similar reasons. Overall, they work well together, functioning as a brilliant mesh of visual and written forms of creative expression.

@Cinfhen @Lizpixie

JenniferJarrell I love Patti Smith and I loved Just Kids. 7y
CarolynM Brilliant! I love Mapplethorpe, it really frustrates me how much of the debate about his work centres on the more "adult" images. His flowers and portraits are just amazing. (edited) 7y

I gave this book five stars when I read it in 2008. In 1972, Joyce Maynard had an article published in The New York Times Magazine called “An 18 Year Old Looks Back On Life,” which caught the attention of reclusive famed author JD Salinger. The two began a relationship, despite their gaping age difference, and Maynard dropped out of Yale to be with him. Nine months later, it was over. #marchintooz #livinginthe70s.

Cathythoughts What a true story, I don‘t even know how to respond..... 7y
Reviewsbylola It definitely seems more indicative of the times. I say that with complete naïveté, however I just can‘t imagine a 53 year old man and an 18 year old girl in a relationship these days. ??‍♀️ @Cathythoughts 7y

From my TBR shelf, this sad portrait of five Lisbon sisters who committed suicide. Sounds grim.

TheFunkyBookworm @erzascarletbookgasm I remember watching this movie way back when! Curious to hear how u like the book! 7y
Kalalalatja Eugenides really like books set in the 70‘s! 7y
Jabberwocky Honestly this book is one of my absolute favourites. I read it as a young adult and it was one of the first adult books that I read outside of sci-fi and fantasy. Love. 7y

jillannjohn I haven‘t read this yet. The author of Dear Fahrenheit 451 listed it as one of her favorites too. It‘s time for me to check it out. 7y

Zelma I adored this book; the atmosphere and tone are just so eerie and claustrophobic. 7y

Middlesex: A Novel | Jeffrey Eugenides

While #livinginthe70s, 14 year old Callie finally learns why she has felt so different all her life: she isn‘t a girl, she‘s a boy. While drawing lines through 3 generations, Eugenides tells the story about how much society‘s gender expectations influence every child‘s life.

Cortg Curious what you think of Silver Star. I loved her 1st two but wasn‘t feeling the description of this one. I may change my mind! 7y
Clwojick I picked this up for a friend of mine last year, because it was on her #tbr for a while, but I haven‘t read it. Let me know how it is! ♥️ 7y
