Wow. This book completely drew me in. I finished it & looked up to realise it was 7am & I hadn‘t moved from the same spot since I‘d started at midnight. Loved it so much I was completely overwhelmed with jealousy that these literary characters were in a perfect part of the Scottish highlands, and I wasn‘t.😩 if you love Scotland or any of Colgans other books, you‘ll love this one. 5⭐️ #LitsyAtoZ2020 #LetterB #PopSugar20 #WithAnMCInTheir20s 👇👇👇

This book is so dense and so gut wrenching that I couldn‘t read it straight through. At almost 500 pages, every page was difficult to read. There were a lot of lesser known shootings, and I was especially riveted by those pre-Columbine, during a time school shooter hadn‘t yet entered our vernacular. #publishedin2019 #booked2019

Cinfhen This one sounds really painful to read 💔 3mo
Mdargusch The title is gut wrenching just to start. 3mo

The Chain | Adrian McKinty

This had a great premise, but as other reviewers noted, kind of fizzled towards the end. The idea of an organization forcing child kidnap for ransom was intriguing, & I even liked the background on who was behind the chain. But I wasn't drawn in by any characters except maybe the kids, the bad guys were a bit cartoonishly evil, & by the end the chapters were too short & jumped around too much. Lots of suspension of disbelief required. 2.75⭐️s

This was such a strange little story, it reminded me very much Of Picnic At Hanging Rock. Like a hot Australian summer when the cicadas are at their peak, your thongs stick to the road & the seat belt becomes a branding iron, and you lie under a tree having heat dreams. That‘s what this novel makes me feel. Three sisters go missing one hot Aussie summer and all the secrets come wafting to the surface. #Pop19 #PublishedIn2019

marleed And I‘m thinking by thongs you mean the flip-flop sandal variety! Ooh, oww on the undergarment thong :) 6mo
Lizpixie @marleed yes! The footware not the undies! That would be painful😳Sometimes I forget that not everyone is australian🇦🇺 6mo

Trying to compare THUG to OTCU, or Starr and Bri, does not do justice to this story and its characters. Bri is passionate and flawed, and I love her for it. Her determination to help lift her family out of poverty and achieve her dreams is admirable, even though some of her choices are misguided. And her mom. 💙💙 All the feels to Jay!

Cinfhen Does this read as very YA ??? I know it IS YA, but some books feel less angsty and eye rolling inducing (edited) 9mo
4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen Slightly more than THUG, but Angie Thomas focuses on a lot of timely issues in her stories: institutionalized racism, misogyny and discrimination in the music industry, police brutality, etc. And unlike a lot of YA, the adult characters are well developed. (edited) 9mo

I really enjoyed this one! The entire book is written in an interview format (who the interviewer turns out to be was a nice little twist) and it reads as if it‘s an episode of Behind The Music. I think the author did a nice job of capturing the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n‘ roll mentality of the 70s.
Read for:

Gritty, realistic, frenetic but above all, authentic.
This story follows Ryan, a 15 year old small-scale drug runner, who becomes a part of something much, much bigger when his best friend is stabbed to death on Gallowstree Lane.
It is fast paced and though told from multiple POVs, it is not confusing. The writing is concise, extremely believable and topical.
