The Bookshop on the Shore
The Bookshop on the Shore: A Novel | Jenny Colgan
A grand baronial house on Loch Ness, a quirky small-town bookseller, and a single mom looking for a fresh start all come together in this witty and warm-hearted novel by New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgan. Desperate to escape from London, single mother Lottie wants to build a new life for herself and her son Raffie. She can barely afford the crammed studio apartment on a busy street where honking horns and shouting football fans keep them awake all night. If she doesnt find a way out soon, Lottie knows its just a matter of time before she has a complete meltdown. On a whim, she answers an ad for a nanny job in the Scottish Highlands, which is about as far away from the urban crush of London as possible. It sounds heavenly! The job description asks for someone capable of caring for twowell, the advertisement says gifted children; the reality is more like feral wolverines. The childrens widowed father is a wreck, and the kids run wild in a huge tumbledown castle on the heather-strewn banks of Loch Ness. Still, the peaceful, picturesque location is everything London is notand Lottie rises to the challenges of the job. With the help of Nina, the friendly local bookseller, Lottie begins to put down roots in the community. Are books, fresh air, and kindness enough to heal this broken familyand her own?

A lovely addition to the Bookshop series. Some familiar characters and some entirely new make up the ensemble in this tale. Not so much about the books this time but a quietly earnest story of broken families and shattered hearts. I found myself reaching for this book at every opportunity.

#SoaringScores #CatchUp
Set in the Scottish Highlands with boats, hills & fog, I think this book works as a catch up for #LeavingPort #MistyMountains & #TheSkyeBoatSong 😉Finished early in the week. The usual Colgan sweet & a nice revisit to the characters from The Bookshop on the Corner with a new MC helping out Nina. I wasn‘t sure of Zoe at first but she won me over & I adored the two young boys Hari & Patrick. Not my favorite but easy & good.

DebinHawaii I just realized the description must be for the British version as the MC & son‘s names are totally different. Odd. 🤔 (edited) 1mo

My finished Creamy Vegan Potato-Leek Soup was lunch earlier, my blog post & delicious. The dehydrated potato flakes & coconut milk made it ultra thick & creamy. Perfect for lunches this week. Recipe link below. Jenny Colgan books are always nice to relax with on a Sunday afternoon.

This falls into the ok category for me. The story really dragged in places and I found my self skimming to get to the end. I did not like the father Ramsey and the there was no excuse for the neglect of his children. I was surprised that I didn‘t like Nina or Lennox characters in this book. I felt horrible for the children especially poor Mary. I don‘t know I guess it just wasn‘t what I expected.

It was a very odd concept- that you could become friends with someone simply by examining their bookshelves- but nevertheless Zoe believed it fervently. 😊😊😊 I think we all agree on Litsy this is very true ❤️

Nice enough story about a single mom doing the best she can for her young son and herself. I especially liked the relationship development between Zoe and the three kids (besides her son) in her care. I was satisfied with the ending, despite its predictability.

I find Jenny Colgan books charming and soothing. This is a sequel to The Bookshop on the Corner, though this time Nina is a minor character. Nothing much happens for a long time, then it all happens in the last few chapters. These are books you read for the characters and the setting. One thing I noticed is the word “absolutely” is used at least a thousand times. It‘s a quirk in one of the child characters but it‘s used a lot beyond that.

I‘ve been reading a lot of “heavy” books recently and needed something a bit more lighthearted. Jenny Colgan always does the trick.

All the books I‘m reading are serious so I decided to change my current audiobook to this one. I loved the first book in this series. This one is still getting to the main story about a third of the way in, but I like it.

The finished Zucchini, Pea & Basil Soup (topped with feta & lemon zest). A good & actually simple Yotam Ottolenghi recipe. Recipe link👇🏻 I tried to get a little reading in between chores & then bookmark making for @LibrarianRyan ‘s #bookmarkswap. (I‘m attempting to get them out by Tuesday & hope they make it by the 15th. 🤞🏻🙏🏻)

I love a Jenny Colgan book when I need something light & sweet.🤗 Why is it Monday again tomorrow? 😩

Another enjoyable book by Jenny Colgan. I always want to hop on a plane and go live in the places where her books take place. I feel like this one would be the perfect Fall read. I wish that it wasn‘t so hot out because a cup of tea and some freshly baked shortbread would be perfect with this book. Plus it takes place in the Fall. You don‘t need to read The Bookshop on the Corner to read this one. But it might make a bit more sense if you do.

3⭐ a cute story about Zoe. You can read this as a standalone, if you didnt read the previous one. Nina and Surinder have minor roles. Zoe is raising her son Hari without help from the dad, she ends up going to Inverness as an au pair to 3 wild children. And to run the bookmobile while Nina is laid up. A fun tale

I have found that no matter what Jenny Colgan writes I absolutely love it! This was no exception! Wonderful characters who some are from other books of hers and wonderful new characters you fall in love with. Beautiful descriptions of the Scottish country and a story you can‘t help but love and don‘t want to put down!

Another wonderful Jenny Colgan! I recommend her books to readers at my library pretty frequently and they always seem to hit the mark with readers. While this is the second in the Scottish Bookshop series, it could be read, and enjoyed, without reading the first. The Bookshop on the Shore is a wonderful story and I can't wait to see what's up next from Jenny Colgan!
