Cuilin So Tiger Mom Parenting is not a new concept. 3d
See All 6 Comments
willaful An old saying of my husband's father, “teenage boys should be put in a barrel and fed through the bunghole, and at 18 you either let them out or close up the bunghole.“ Might not have been a terrible joke if he hadn't actually treated his sons with such disdain. 🤬

I have some sympathy with Laura's mom... the “fear of falling“ must have been really strong in her position. But people who love babies so much are annoying! 😂
3d
mcctrish Just no one serve me lamb‘s tail pie and I‘d rather books than babies any day (edited) 3d
Bookwormjillk @willaful I have sympathy for her mom too- but maybe because I have two teenagers in the house. It‘s hard to let‘s our dreams for our kids go. On the other had she‘s kind of mean. I hope I don‘t sound that way 😂 3d

Bookwormjillk @mcctrish I‘m not even sure what that insult means exactly but I like it 2w
dabbe @mcctrish I actually laughed out loud when I read it in the book and louder at this post! 😂😂😂 2w
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk it can‘t be good 🤣 2w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead 👏🏻😂👏🏻 2w
KAO I‘ve enjoyed these past two chapters! I think that all of the previous details about life in this hamlet enhance my appreciation for the difficulties and hard-won delights of this time period—and I can‘t help but wonder how readers 80+ years from now will read about life in the 2020s with no small amount of amusement! 2w
BarbaraJean @mcctrish @willaful @Bookwormjillk @dabbe I came here for the hen‘s backside discussion 😂 2w

Ch 10: I was going to post a pic of Mary and Laura but then we were introduced to the #garibaldi #thatchickwasnutsthough #thosegirlsworkedhard #yikes #soyoung #bessieandchokey #newgenerationofhousewives #yougogirls #hashtagbrigade

Bookwormjillk I never got to Little House last night but this chapter gave me Downton Abbey vibes so now I really don't know what to watch. #FridayProblems 3w

willaful What's a “bedroom utensil?“ From context, I'm guessing a chamber pot? 3w
BarkingMadRead @willaful I think so? The only other thing I can think of would be one of these heating pans for cold nights 3w
Bookwormjillk @willaful @BarkingMadRead I was wondering too but was afraid to google 3w
Bklover I love how the younger generation quit popping out kids by the dozen! Those kids had to start working so young. 3w
Cuilin The last paragraph about wages finally being raised in the 90s, but then other costs rising too, and it taking a war for it to level out 😳 3w

AllDebooks What just happened? 😱 3mo
AllDebooks @BarkingMadRead the u-turns from this aunt are making my head spin! 3mo
BarkingMadRead @AllDebooks she‘s exhausting! 3mo
mcctrish @AllDebooks I‘ve got whiplash 3mo
mcctrish Sigh. Sob. You must go. Wait, listen to this. Sigh. Sob. Don‘t ever forget me. You must forget me. Sigh. Sob. #putafeatherinhishatandcallhimmacaroni 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly Definitely saw Marconi forbidding the marriage coming! There is a lot of sighing and fainting in this chapter. There is no way I would be slogging through this book without the #hashtagbrigade! I *will* learn what Catherine Morland gets so excited about! (edited) 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly I just realized I got his name wrong in a completely different way 😂 Montoni! 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly Also! Doesn‘t Valancourt have a first name? He calls Emily by her name all the time but she doesn‘t use his name in dialogue. Did Radcliffe just not feel like coming up with a first name? 3mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t think they‘ve mentioned a first name? I‘m not sure! 3mo
dabbe This is the perfect kind of book for me right now. No matter how bad things are or seem to be today, I am quite grateful to not be Emily in the late 1500's with absolutely no money and no say in what she can/can't do in her life. #yikes #andyesshecrieswaytoomuch #scmb 3mo
TheAromaofBooks The aunt being like “suck it up or people will judge you for not being able to get over your completely inappropriate boyfriend“ like 48 hours ago you were totally on his team?!?! Geezy 3mo

Bookwormjillk I can‘t decide what‘s creepier- the sleepwalking or the vampire. 4mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk for real. He keeps hinting that it‘s something sinister making her sleepwalk. 🧛🏻‍♀️ 4mo

mcctrish @Bookwormjillk that sleep walking is taking her straight to a vampire #shesbeenbedazzled why else would she get dressed up ? #vampiresonar 4mo
TheAromaofBooks All the sailors getting picked off! 😨 4mo
rubyslippersreads @TheAromaofBooks Dracula couldn‘t make that long voyage without snacks. 🤣 (edited) 4mo
dabbe The suspense for me is always the idea that Mina has no idea what\'s going on (even though she records the ship\'s information), but we do! Usually one runs across dramatic irony in dramas, but Stoker is exemplary at this technigue since the very beginning. We know exactly what\'s going on, but the characters take forever to get a clue. 4mo
CatLass007 Finally, Tim Curry‘s narration begins! 4mo
TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads - I mean, I can\'t exactly blame him. I do love me some travel snacks 😂 4mo

willaful I was expecting something horrible. I guess Sydney was too.

Kerr continues to be the effing worst. She deliberately tantalized Sydney and then tried to lure her back. Sydney went to a dark place but I\'m glad she has learned better now. Only two chapters left, perhaps she\'s safe? 😬
4mo
mcctrish Kerr is the worst @willaful and if the worst thing that happens is Sydney sees the light of her rushed marriage almost colliding with a logging truck #couldbeworse 4mo
willaful @mcctrish Yes, I think it was the right decision. But I hate the thought of Kerr feeling like she won. 🤬 4mo
peanutnine Calling it off was the right decision but I do feel bad for Milton. He seems like collateral damage in the whole affair 4mo
julieclair Sydney is a hot mess. Calling off the engagement is definitely the right idea. @peanutnine I agree about Milton… I feel very sorry for him. 4mo

Cuilin Does anybody else feel like in order to make this more palatable to a Victorian reader Ruth had to be punished in some way? Hence the hair being cut, almost like she‘s in prison???? 6mo
IndoorDame @Cuilin I think you‘re right 6mo
See All 18 Comments
IndoorDame When it says Faith switched to the informal you with Ruth and she didn‘t notice at first… is the implication supposed to be that Faith lost respect for her when she found out about the pregnancy, or that she‘s trying to make the fiction of their distant “family connection” convincing since they gave her a family name and now their reputations are on the line too? 6mo
Ruthiella I think also that Sally is protecting her naive employers. She‘s saying, “if I can see through this ruse, so will others. Let‘s make it work”. 6mo
TheBookHippie @Cuilin YES!!!! This exactly. 6mo
AllDebooks @Cuilin absolutely. 6mo
AllDebooks I have read a lot of Victorian fiction and history and never heard of widows cutting their hair. I went down a Google rabbit hole and found this quite interesting 🤔 https://journalofantiques.com/features/the-evolution-of-mourning-wear/ 6mo
currentlyreadinginCO I felt that, too, and how the punishment failing to shame Ruth changed Sally's desire to punish her in the first place @Ruthiella 6mo
dabbe @Ruthiella Agree 💯. 6mo
Clare-Dragonfly I was skeptical that Sally dropping him could have caused his “deformity” but I searched Wikipedia for “hunchback” and it *can* be caused by trauma! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyphosis 6mo
Clare-Dragonfly @IndoorDame I read it as Sally using the formal “you” with her employers—the Bensons, not Ruth—when they arrived, but as she got comfortable again, switched to the informal “thou” she is used to. I don‘t think she switched pronouns with Ruth. 6mo
IndoorDame @Clare-Dragonfly oh, makes sense. Thanks 6mo
mcctrish “Men on the other hand weren‘t expected to follow the rigid mourning rules” @AllDebooks the world really hates women! Imagine if we didn‘t just want equality and autonomy and decided to get even 6mo
Clare-Dragonfly @AllDebooks Fascinating, thanks for sharing! I‘d heard of deep mourning and half-mourning but somehow I‘d missed the existence of second mourning! 6mo
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly Interesting... I was skeptical too. 6mo
willaful @Ruthiella Also a good point. 6mo

Love how she's portrayed as "old..." she's 20. ?

Times sure were different back then. Between reading this and Clan of the Cave Bear, I'm pretty damn grateful to be around in this day and age and not when it was normal for 11-13 year olds to have children/get married. #yikes
Also, guy calling her "old" looks to be in his 70s, which makes absolutely no sense ?

Side note: the artwork is absolutely stunning.

Aimeesue The Bertha thing is so creepy. NO ONE likes the name Bertha as a lovely and mellifluous name. Liar. (edited) 9mo
BarkingMadRead @Aimeesue it is 💯 messed up. So gross and super passive aggressive 9mo
Aimeesue @BarkingMadRead so controlling. Red flag! Red flag! 🚩 Sigh. Too late. 9mo
Bookwormjillk I keep confusing Rochester with Max DeWinter. We keep reading about these messed up men who believe themselves to be victims. 9mo
Librarybelle I was so confused when the narration kept changing. Admittedly, this one is a bit of a struggle for me…I feel like I‘ve not found a good rhythm yet with the writing, and we‘re near the end! 9mo
mcctrish @Librarybelle I keep wondering if I‘m the crazy one because WTF is happening 9mo
5feet.of.fury The Bertha thing, separating her from Christophine… husband is a creep. Wish the zombi got him 9mo
mcctrish @Aimeesue Bertha is brutal 9mo
5feet.of.fury @Librarybelle yeah, I do not get this one. I read through 2 pages & had no idea whose POV or what had happened. 9mo
Librarybelle Glad I‘m not the only one, @mcctrish @5feet.of.fury 9mo
IndoorDame @Bookwormjillk This actually does remind me a bit of Rebecca in the sense that all of the characters are unreliable, but there‘s still something about all of them that draws you into their worlds when they‘re the ones talking, and the whole place is intoxicating and bordering on fantastical. 9mo
willaful I continue to have no memory at all of having read this.

I'm furious and disgusted with Rochester. He's totally yellow-wallpapering Antoinette.
9mo
Clare-Dragonfly I still don‘t get why Richard wanted Antoinette to marry Rochester so badly. She had plenty of money, she could have lived independently! @IndoorDame Yes, I was also reminded of Rebecca, and you‘ve articulated why very well! 9mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I wonder if he just didn‘t want to feel responsible for her anymore? She would have been fine by herself, I don‘t know why he felt the need to marry her off 9mo
julieclair I am so disappointed in Rochester. He used to be one of my book boyfriends, but now he‘s off the list! 9mo
TheBookHippie Sorry I bailed. Too much life going on to read this darkness. 😵‍💫 9mo

Rebecca | Daphne D Maurier

IndoorDame The intro to my copy points out that she is only ever “the second Mrs de Winter” (and it has some very pointed things to say about that 😂) but that‘s quite a mouthful so I think she‘s gonna need a nickname 10mo
See All 29 Comments
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame I totally agree. We have to call her something 🤷🏻‍♀️ poor thing never has a name, although we know it‘s a pretty one and also unique. Super helpful. 10mo
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead I‘ve often wondered what constitutes a “unique” name for a white woman in England in the 30s 10mo
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame probably something so chill now 10mo
Ruthiella Her name is Jan Brady, forever doomed to be overshadowed by Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! I mean, Rebecca. 10mo
IndoorDame @Ruthiella 👏👏👏 Sold! call her Jan 🤣 (edited) 10mo
Ruthiella Also, it‘s so awkward when your first date is an attempted murder/suicide! 😱😆 10mo
CatLass007 @Ruthiella You have a wicked sense of humor! I like that in a person. 10mo
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella 🤣☠️🤣☠️ 10mo
Bookwormjillk Jan 😂 🏈 10mo
rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella Jan is perfect! 10mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I need to find a book about gardens in DDuM books. "The daffodils were in bloom, stirring in the evening breeze, golden heads cupped upon lean stalks, and however many you might pick there would be no thinning of the ranks, they were massed like an army, shoulder to shoulder. On a bank below the lawns, crocuses were planted, golden, pink, and mauve, but by this time they would be past their best, dropping and fading, like pallid snowdrops.⬇️ 10mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig The primrose was more vulgar, a homely pleasant creature who appeared in every cranny like a weed. Too early yet for bluebells, their heads were still hidden beneath last year‘s leaves, but when they came, dwarfing the more humble violet, they choked the very bracken in the woods, and with their color made a challenge to the sky....People who plucked bluebells from the woods were vandals; he had forbidden it at Manderley." 10mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig So many flowers in this Chapter. I highlighted so many. 10mo
Roary47 @Ruthiella I love it! Jan is who I will imagine her to be. Plus we don‘t know her actual age either. Are they on a date showing she‘s older than a child? 10mo
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 I get the idea that she‘s an adult, but maybe a bit younger than Max 10mo
Ruthiella @Roary47 I am reading a bit ahead. I think in chapter five it‘s confirmed she is 21. 👍 But Maxim is “old enough to be her father”, so 35 to 40 years old, I imagine. 🤔 10mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Crinoline_Laphroaig Yes, the descriptions are so vivid and wonderful! I can see the flowers so clearly! 10mo
Bookwormjillk These chapters are long but they don‘t feel like it. 10mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I totally agree! 10mo
Graciouswarriorprincess @Crinoline_Laphroaig These descriptions are so vivid! 10mo
julieclair I am really appreciating du Maurier‘s beautifully descriptive prose this time around. I don‘t remember noticing it as much the first time I read this. 10mo
ElizaMarie I agree with “Jan“ as her name for now... But wouldn't it be wild if her name is Daphne? I mean, if I were an author, maybe I would name a character after myself and then say how beautiful the name is repeatedly. 10mo
BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie that‘s a brilliant point! 10mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Oh, my nose! Oh,my nose! 😂😂😂 10mo
