“Like this country, I am a child in extremis. That is why my parents named me Maya -- illusion, the one whom we believe is, but who is not.”

Maya grows up in poverty on the island of #Mauritius, near a luxurious tourist resort. When she falls in love with its manager, she dares to dream but in the end the gap between their two worlds is too big. Her love turns into fury.

Megabooks Stacking! Sounds very interesting! 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks It is. Short and easy and I learned a bit about this isolated country. 2y

#BookMail Warmth is for my IRL bookclub and the other two I ordered off the #ToB22LongList ( oh well) Hopefully I can slot them into other challenge prompts.

TrishB 2 of them look like more big books! 2y
squirrelbrain They look huuuuge! 📚 2y
Cinfhen Warmth is 545 and another 70 pages of notes and History is 590 with more than 100 pages of endnotes @TrishB @squirrelbrain BUT YESSSSSSS, I‘ve become a girl who #LikesBigBooks …..in moderation 😁😘 2y

Cinfhen This one looks like a book you can #ReadInOneSitting 2y
sarahbarnes I did read Edie Richter in more or less one sitting. It didn‘t really work for me, but will be interested to hear what you think of it! 2y
DivineDiana I loved Warmth! I am very impressed with the skill of Isabel Wilkerson‘s ability to draw you into the story, and it is a powerful one. 2y
Cinfhen I‘m very much looking forward to reading it with my bookclub @DivineDiana (edited) 2y
Cinfhen I‘ll keep you posted @sarahbarnes - I‘m not really a fan of stream of consciousness writing and I think that might be an issue with this book (edited) 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m more partial to YA than middle grade books but everything Reynolds writes is amazing. This is our 1st book for virtual teacher book club.

Would love to use excerpts/chapters of this in the classroom if I didn‘t have time to teach the whole book. It‘s 10 interconnected stories of students on their walks home from school each day & how different each student‘s journey home is.

This book was not what I expected. Dark and shocking; violence erupts when someone steps out from a small box of a life. We see Yeong-hye from the perspectives of 3 people around her. She seems to be a blank space to everyone until the day she stops eating meat. It is about more than this one choice and the clashes it causes, Yeong-hye is slowly abdicating from humanity (in my opinion). A lot to unpack here ⬇️

Centique A very short very strange book #readinonesitting that does not hold back. I was riveted by this but I loved her book Human Acts more. TW for violence to animals. 4y
Cathythoughts Great review... just download a sample on kindle 👍🏻 4y
Reggie I have this just staring me down from a bookcase. You‘re kinda making me want to read it next month. 4y

Centique @Reggie PS I‘m on a spate of weird books. From the Wreck is just deliciously strange 😜 4y

I made a decision in my mid-20s not to have children. It was 100% the right decision mentally and physically for me, I have no doubts.

But I have an imagination. And I have Instagram full of celebrity and friends‘ kids. They‘re cute, and sometimes I enjoy seeing them.

Then I read a beautiful book like this. If my friends were still having kids, I‘d give it as a gift. Just shows me what the fuss is about. 😁

BarbaraBB Such a lovely review ❤️ 4y
Librarybelle Great review! And awesome for covering multiple challenges! 4y

Cinfhen Was it a tear jerker? 4y
Cinfhen Beautiful review by the way 4y
Megabooks @Bette Thank you! 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thank you! 💜 it was not a tear jerker for me, although I did get misty eyed once. It‘s written more humorously than to really cause a cry. 4y
Cinfhen Ok, good to know xx how you doing today?? 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen Good!! I‘ve been making progress getting my strength back. 👍🏻👍🏻 4y

Reviewsbylola Kids are definitely a choice that one should weigh heavily. They‘re awesome if you want them, but damn it‘s a lot of emotional labor. 4y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I can‘t do the physical or emotional labor of kids. It just wouldn‘t have been good for me. I know there‘s kind of, hmmm, a love beyond what I‘ll understand, but there‘s also difficult parts, too. 4y
Reviewsbylola My husband always tried to warn me about the difficult parts beforehand. I didn‘t listen. 😅 It‘s so worth it if it‘s what you want. But I feel like we live in a society that expects lives to take a certain trajectory, with kids included, and being a parent is something that shouldn‘t be forced on people. Plus, the upside is there are always other people having kids so it‘s not like childless people can‘t get a fix. 😆 4y

Such a cute book with beautiful illustrations and colors it's great to see a kid's book inspire children especially children of color to love the skin they are born with and see the good within. #books#kidsbookswelove #kidsbooks #illustration #libby #libbyapp #libbylibraryapp #short #shortbook #loveyourskin #loveyourself #diversekidsbooks #lupitanyongo #fiction #lifelessons #bookstagram #ireadthisbookonbreak #readinonesitting
