This book has beautiful art. It is the story of a little girl whose skin is as Black as night, but the skin colors in her family are all different than hers: they are all lighter shades. She questions why this is, and is hurt by other kids calling her names. She ends up meeting her Ancestors, who help her understand she is beautiful and perfect, just the way she is. Sadly, this book will likely be banned. Read it!

Sulwe doesn‘t look like anyone in her family or her school, & kids make fun of her for her midnight colored skin. She cries to her mother, prays... Nothing works until one night a star whisks her away to tell her a legend about moon & sun who were a lot like her & her sister. This was a better than adorable picture book talking about the beauty of our differences and how regardless of color, each person brings something unique that only they can.

Each person is beautiful for who they are, beyond skin color.

Totally recommend to all readers.. I don't care that the recommended was 4-8 or something like that because this was good.

this book is so sad that a little girl is black and the others are dawn dust and bright 😓 but shes still perfect and beatfuil. 😌 and its a perfect book. and she no friends in my first day of pre k i was so shy and sacred no one was my friend but i still knew that i was gonna make a friend and guess what i did!!!. i can remeber my friends but you are still perfect and handsome and fine just they way you are they way you are the way you are are

“There would be no hiding anymore. She belonged out in the world! Dark and beautiful, bright and strong.” What an absolutely lovely & moving story, w/stunning artwork! Haven‘t read a picture book since I was a toddler but there‘s a prompt on the Reading Women list to read one by a BIPOC author & I knew this would be a wonderful one to pick up. Sulwe learns to love her dark skin, as beautiful as the night sky. I want this cover as a poster! 4/5 ⭐️

What a beautiful story with gorgeous illustrations. ❤️

Sulwe struggles with her dark skin; she sees how much her sister is complimented, while Sulwe receives taunts. As Sulwe discovers, though, dark is beautiful. More importantly, beauty lies in everyone. A story of self esteem and power to love oneself, not to mention celebrating everyone‘s differences in appearance. Also liked the story Sulwe‘s mom told her about the sisters Night and Day, and appreciated Lupita‘s author note. “Don‘t wait for anyone to tell you what is beautiful. I love to read books from other cultures, and see/ hear their stories. This one is a great story of how night and day work together, but also about how we can work together regardless of our skin color. The little girl is able to find herself though her culture and her dream.

I do the Annotated Bibliography of independent reading along with my Children's Lit students, and this summer I am focusing on books by people of color, especially Black authors. I was glad to see that Sulwe stood up to the hype, and that there is a book addressing colorism for kids. The illustrations are gorgeous, with such attention to light, reflection, and shadow, especially on Sulwe's dark skin.

Beautifully illustrated story about a little girl who learns to love herself. It follows Sulwe‘s wish to be lighter and brighter like her sister and how she learned to love her own unique beauty.

Bought this for my niece a few weeks ago, and it finally arrived in the mail. She loved it.

10 out of 10 would recommend.

On point, my daughter told a nurse at a check up that she loves herself. 😁👍🏾💜 The moments of exception are during hair brushing, but that is simply a fact of life that is quickly forgotten afterwards.

This F picture book tells the story of Sulwe, a young girl with skin as dark as midnight, who has a burning desire for lighter skin. She goes on a journey and finds that beauty comes from within! #ReallyRandomFebruary Day 13: While I initially harboured reservations about the story as is my wont with celebrity-authored children‘s books, Sulwe won me over with its starry-eyed-truth. It would be good to also have a narrative about accomplished dark-skinned women having insecurities because of the societal #expectation(s) leveled against women, especially women of colour. I‘m sure there‘s nothing I can say about this book that hasn‘t already been said. So many young girls have needed to hear this message. It should be on the shelf of every elementary classroom. And the illustrations! Stunningly beautiful.

Funny Moment - My 8 year old brought this to the checkout desk and I exclaimed, "Yes Chaya, this won something last week." I couldn't remember what the award was so I asked the librarian. We knew it wasn't Newberry or Caldecott. Then, I remembered - IT WAS A LITSY AWARD. I laughed and then had to explain what Litsy was. ?

How AWESOME is it that the last two picture books standing for the #LitsyAwards were both #OwnVoices pics.

The Winner in this round goes to an actor, but second place is nothing to cry about, as they have been nominated for an Oscar for the animated short the book was turned into.

That decision hasn't been made yet, but you all decided that Lupita Nyong'o 's Sulwe wins for the best picture book of 2019.

I just finished this beautiful book!
I think all children should read/listen to it. Even adults! It teaches in a simple way, with beautiful images & a magical story, how we should LOVE & ACCEPT one another. We ARE ALL beautiful: all skin tones/cultures/race/beliefs/age/body type/healthy/handicapped/wealthy or not... The world is aching/TOGETHER we can heal it!

This is a gorgeous picture book! If you‘re looking for a book for a younger family member, great choice from 2019 to promote beauty and brightness as something we see in ourselves, not something we depend on other people to see.

Some celebrities can write awesome picture books (Jamie Lee Curtis, John Lithgow), others not so much. I have high hopes for this because the cover is amazing.
