I have always been fascinated by the Watergate scandal, and this book reminds me of the days of excellent reporting and research in the search for truth. Every time I read it, I learn something new.

TheSpineView I read this in high school. 2mo
dabbe @TheSpineView #metoo! And saw the movie. I've read it multiple times since (and seen the movie ... #hubbahubba RR!) 2mo
TheSpineView @dabbe I loved the movie. 2mo

peaKnit Loved this movie, we picked it apart in my college White Collar Crime class. 2mo

dabbe @peaKnit Where was this class when I was in college? I would have loved to have taken it! 🤩 2mo
BookmarkTavern I‘ve seen the movie, but I‘ve never read the book. I definitely should do that. Thanks for answering! 2mo
Bookwormjillk @dabbe my neighbor took us on a boat ride today and we went past the Watergate. The urge to re-read this is strong right now! 2mo
dabbe @BookmarkTavern It's so good! YW! 🤩😂🤗 2mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Okay, how cool is that? Perfect timing for a reread, too! 🤩😂🤗 2mo
peaKnit It was at UW-Whitewater (Wisconsin) I had a criminal justice minor. I wish true crime podcasts were invented in the early 90‘s, I was true crime before it was cool 🤣 2mo
dabbe @peaKnit My fascination with true crime goes back to Ted Bundy. Who killed multiple women, including two of them at Chi Omega Sorority at FSU. I was a Chi Omega at U of A in the mid 1980s. We all had to sleep on a sleeping porch together BECAUSE of TB. We weren't allowed to sleep alone. Ever. 😱 2mo
DogMomIrene @peaKnit Want to audit that class! 2mo
peaKnit Omg, Ted Bundy sparked my interest in crime. I feel like I know everything there is to know about him and get so excited when I learn a new nugget. How scary though being in college, and the same sorority that was victimized, at that time, he was absolutely unhinged when he went to Florida. The most complete psychopath I have ever learned about. Have you read Bright Young Women? (edited) 2mo
dabbe @peaKnit Nope. It's now on the TBR! 🤩 2mo

Full disclosure: I don‘t actually remember much from this specific book vs. the other Watergate era books I‘ve read, but according to Goodreads, this was the book I liked most from February! #12Booksof2023 @Andrew65

Andrew65 It‘s amazing how much doesn‘t stay on our heads when we read a lot of books. 12mo

Reporter | Seymour M. Hersh
Mehso-so

Seymour Hersh is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist known for his work uncovering the My Lai massacre, the Watergate scandal and the Abu Ghraib war crimes. This memoir focuses on his career and how he broke his biggest stories but offers nothing personal, no analysis of changes in the profession or the ways anonymous sources can be used and misused. I think the book suffers for that, leaving it an okay factual read rather than an insightful one.

Bk1 of #WinterGames & #20in4 #readathon was finished Sunday. Sorry I haven‘t posted till now, we‘ve had a bad start to December here. I have read a few books still. This NF is one I‘ve wanted to read for years, Watergate is fascinating. Written by the two journalists who persevered with the story even under pressure from government agencies who just wanted the incident to go away. Nixon & Trump have a lot in common! #TeamEvergreen #4866pts 👇

Andrew65 Sorry to hear that, sending best wishes ❤️ Have you seen the film? 13mo
Bookwormjillk I hope December gets better! 13mo

CatLass007 At least Nixon knew when it was time to throw in the towel. 13mo

Lizpixie @andrew65 thanks lovely. It‘s been pretty crappy both healthwise & familywise, fingers crossed things change before Xmas🤞Yes, I love the movie! Just did a rewatch before listening to the audiobook. Those guys were real journalists, backed up by a reputable paper that actually had their backs. Very impressed by them, totally disgusted with Nixon & his gang of merry hatchet men #IAmNotACrook✌️ 13mo
Lizpixie @Bookwormjillk thank you! I hope so too❤️ @CatLass007 oh he was dragged out kicking & screaming all the way, don‘t worry. AFTER throwing everyone who helped, conspired & believed in him under the bus first. He‘s just lucky that some of the international leaders he clandestinely recorded didn‘t retaliate honestly. I highly recommend reading this, what he (almost)got away with is insane! 13mo
Bookwormjillk Also I really liked 13mo
CatLass007 I remember watching him give his resignation speech live on television. I know he would like to have stayed in power but he wasn‘t completely tone deaf about what would happen if he didn‘t resign. He thought he could get away with the things he did but he eventually realized that resigning was the best thing for him. I‘m sure he was given guarantees that Gerald Ford would pardon him. 13mo
Lizpixie @Bookwormjillk thanks for the recce! Another book on my overstuffed TBR 🫣It sounds brilliant.👍 13mo
Lizpixie @CatLass007 I was only two years old when this happened so no firsthand memories for me! But even here in Australia, Nixon was taught in school & documentaries were on tv plus the fabulous movie with Redford & Hoffman. Watergate has always been a moment in history that fascinated me but even so this book has a lot of behind the scenes bad behaviour that was new. The recent mini series Gaslit with Julia Roberts I highly recommend as well👍 13mo
dabbe I have read this numerous times, and I still learn something new every time I read it! 🤩😍😃 13mo
BookmarkTavern Sounds fascinating! 👍🏻 13mo

Funny, sharp and strange little book. Inspired by the Watergate scandal, but can be read as a satire on corruption/abuse of power in general. My third Spark (after The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Girls of Slender Means) and probably my least favorite. Any recommendations for which Spark should be my fourth?

Graywacke I enjoyed this oddball one a lot 1y
kspenmoll I have not started this yet, but plan to 1y
Liz_M I also enjoyed the tagged. Strike that, I think I would have liked it if I read it at a different time. (edited) 1y
jlhammar @Graywacke I'll have to give that one a try. Thanks, Dan! 1y

I‘ve been reading this for years and finally finished! Definitely a pick for anyone as fascinated with Richard Nixon as I am. I realized near the end that the day I‘m planning to leave Japan after 17 years here is the 49th anniversary of his resignation, so the last part about his departure particularly resonated. #chunskter
