II. He was later to recall: “I issued two statements in that one year—both on Watergate. . . . Geez, what options did I really have? By this time I was up the #river with these two reporters. I can remember sitting down at the typewriter and writing about thirty statements and then sort of saying, ‘Fuck it, let‘s go stand by our boys.‘”

What a weird experience!!! I feel like I'm in a warp zone - traveling back and forth between the early 70s and now. After reading this book, I've come to appreciate the media in trying to find the truth about crooked politicians. It took more than a year for the whole truth to come out, but Woodward and Bernstein kept at it. I learned so much. When the Prez starts firing left and right AND people start resigning, Prez is protecting his illegality.
#24b4Monday stack. GOAL - 24 HURDLE - My sister is having a hysterectomy and I don't know what she will need. I have to be there for her. I will probably take my Kindle to the hospital and read The Passion According to Carmela.
I just found this incredibly funny. The poor, poor man is found to be a sabateur in Nixon's pay, but he thinks his dog and cat is as important as his family and wife.
Adding this #Nonfiction #historical account to my #TBR stack. #GreenvilleSC #JoesPlace
Kicking off a month(ish) of memoirs with an American themed Fourth of July entry. Spoiler alert: this one holds up on the re-read!!

They returned with no information and a clear impression that the prosecutors had warned the jurors to #beware of jokers bearing press cards. #QuotsyMar19 #31DaysOfNonFiction
This is so 70s I can't even. Entertaining read, though a bit unstructured as far as providing an overview of the Watergate investigation goes. I recommend reading the Wiki article on the Pentagon Papers before reading this, unless you already know details of the Pentagon Papers publication in '71.
Journalists still have an important role, these are just a few of the noteworthy men & women who are #carryingthebanner of the fourth estate.

Deep Throat: You let Haldeman slip away.
Bob Woodward: Yes.
Deep Throat: You've done worse than let Haldeman slip away: you've got people feeling sorry for him. I didn't think that was possible. ...
Bob Woodward: Yes, we know that. And if we're wrong, we're resigning.
Even decades later, this is a thrilling account of investigative journalism. It‘s also particularly timely considering all of the political investigation is currently happening and the current administration‘s feelings about the press. This book is such a great example of why free press is so important to a democracy.
I started this several weeks ago & laid it aside for various reasons, until today. First, to (mis)quote Mark Twain, for the parallels between Nixon & Trump, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes." I thought I knew what Watergate was about, & why it was scandalous. I was wrong. This account is eye opening. To say that Watergate was about a break-in of the DNC Headquarters, is like saying the Mueller investigation is about Trump ?
“The White House had decided that the conduct of the press, not the conduct of the President‘s men, was the issue.”

Over the weekend I watched the History Channel‘s documentary on Watergate. I was too young to remember any of this and was surprised I have only learned the cliff notes version. I decided to pick this up and Wow! It is riveting!
I‘m a third of the way through and having a hard time putting it down to make dinner.
Maybe takeout tonight 🤷♀️
Congratulations on your milestone, @MicheleinPhilly ! Thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway. I have a number of bookcases throughout my house, but I decided to show you my shelf of autographed books. All of these were signed by the authors at events that I've attended, so I was also lucky enough to meet all of them! #SHOWME
#VoulezVous to know who was really responsible for the Watergate break in? Woodward and Bernstein crack the story of the century, involving Nixon and a plot that led to Nixon‘s resignation. I‘m so glad I snagged a copy of this and can‘t wait to read it! #ABBAinAugust
I've never read this, suddenly I feel a strong urge to pick it up...
(This message brought to you by someone doing lots of Twitter scrolling at the moment!)
Tonight seems as good a night as any to reread this classic. This was my late mother‘s copy. Her bookplate and signature is inside.
At the gate waiting on my flight. I am also celebrating the small victory that I went into two airport bookstores and came out with nothing!! 🤗🤗
Working on my #litsyatoz list, don‘t think my Q (Don Quixote) and X (Area X - Annihilation) will qualify, but only books I own that involve those letters and I want to only use books I own and haven‘t read. And there is my sleepy kitty, she did not enjoy the fireworks last night and is completely exhausted today. #catsoflitsy #bookresolutions #readingresolutions #2018readinggoals
Alright..... I couldn‘t resist. I swear, these 2 books were on the library shelf right beside each other. I just had to snap a photo.
A book exchange has just popped up inside an old telephone box in my town, and I'm loving it! I dropped these two off today, so I won't feel guilty if I take one without putting something back next time. #germanlyf
I love to read history books, whether narrative nonfiction or historical fiction. These are screenshots of some of the books on my presidents and royals shelves. These definitely make me #think #ItsHistory #AugustGrrrl #AndItsAugust Day 7 @RealLifeReading @Cinfhen
I loaned out my copy of this sometime in college, so I got a new one yesterday. The current political climate calls for a reread.
A timely selection for my evening read. 👀 #imsoproudofmyselfforowningthisbookmark #itssosillyandperfect #trickydickcantescapethetapes
An interesting book about the Washington Post reporters who cracked open the Watergate scandal.
#characters2017 #americanidiot @LibrarianRyan
Hard to pick just one American Idiot in Nixon and his band of merry lawbreakers.
I'm not saying there are parallels....
One assignment I give my reading class is to read in a genre they don't usually read. I do it too. Last year I read a football book and an Amish romance so I am running out of genres! Politics was one of the only options left so I went with this (now) classic by the journalists who broke the Watergate scandal. 50 pages in and I've learned so much already! In school I basically learned "Nixon was impeached, something something Watergate."
Talk about timely reading....am less than a day's commute away from finishing this book...
#maybookflowers #truths
This is the story of two reporters who relentlessly pursued truth in the face of lies and corruption. Worth reading for historical context as well as timeliness.
My copy of In Cold Blood is loaned out right now but I also love this political true crime scandalous book! #seewhatihavewon @Liberty
I'm listening to this #audiobook and pruning my Litsy #TBR list while #TrickyCat sleeps contentedly nearby. 💜💜💜
Done with The Watergate Stories, so on to this classic of reporting, in my continuing quest to gain some perspective. 👍🏼
I wasn't alive during Watergate, so while I knew the basics, this book was a fascinating look at how this time unfolded. I was particularly struck with parallels of the current president: attacks on the media, an us vs them mentality, a core group devoted to a person more than a country. It was also fascinating to read how slowly the investigation was brought to light.

Driving to Nashville with my husband for a few days. There's an amazing #usedbook store I'll be hitting while we're there (McKay's #ftw 🏆), but just in case I don't find anything there (like that's even possible lmao), a few #roadtripreads for the duration, plus my #kindle. We have a good system for road trips: he drives while I read (& take 📸 - it's a beautiful drive!) • 🚙🏞📖
What I liked about this book was also what I kind of didn't like. It's very detailed, so I got bogged down at times. Written as the Watergate events were unfolding. In fact, when published, it didn't even include Nixon's resignation. Ford wasn't VP yet. It's strictly from the perspective of investigative journalism. I'm sure I'll eventually read their follow-up book, The Final Days. My only non-fiction book so far for my #birthdaychallenge (1974)
Good movie. Of course a lot was left out (otherwise it'd have been too long), but the gist of the Watergate story was there. And I'm sure you all don't think I'm weird for noticing the books 📚. Top two pics are in Ben Bradlee (Jason Robards) office. Bottom left -- Bernstein's home, bottom right -- Woodward's home. Now to get back to reading the book!
Movie on my laptop and popcorn 🍿. Needed a brief break from the book itself-- about 50 pages left but we all know pretty much how it ends.
When I look at the inside back flap of this book, I think: why was it so important to state Bernstein (30) and Woodward's (31) ages? I also think: looking forward to watching the movie with Hoffman as Bernstein and Redford as Woodward (found a pic of them together from the internet). 🤓possibly this weekend.
The most relevant book in the world right now. Every single person in America should be reading this book and applying its lessons to the current presidency.
"He had picked up a profoundly disturbing piece of information: Magruder was a bike freak. Bernstein had trouble swallowing the information that a bicycle nut could be a Watergate bugger..." I don't know why but I thought this was funny (I am not a bicycle freak at all btw). This book feels like such a time capsule so far, too.
I brought the tagged book with me but didn't read it. Quick overnight trip to D.C. To tour some colleges there for my younger son. Hit just a few sights. In front of the White House, that's him on the right with my older son (daughter unable to tag along 😢). We did pass the Watergate Hotel on the way from one campus to another. It'd be cool to stay there but it's pricey 😱.
I think this will be year 1974 for my #birthdaychallenge. I've had it in my TBR for a few years now!
Sound like anyone else who may currently be in charge of our country? #whenhistoryrepeatsitself
