Two books made it to our dinner party! We made sous vide steak w/ a green salad & garlic lemon dressing & silky macaroni & cheese. Our friends introduced us to the magic of the Great British Bake Off over our New Years trip and as a belated Xmas present we bought them the Mary Berry cookbook! The chocolate torte was a direct result!

I love the 1001 Questions book. Great dinner convo. What questions did YOU ask before getting married/committed?

CouronneDhiver We chatted a ton about child rearing and, despite having come to some level of agreement, ended up (so far, 9 years in) not starting a family. Lol 😂 8y
Soubhiville We also talked about kids- he vehemently did not want them, and I was ok with that. We discussed values and ethics, and while we are vastly different personality wise- him extroverted and I introverted, and many other ways- fundamentally we felt the same way about most important things. 8y
tpixie Great meal! Great photo!! 8y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Our main question to each other was, "Can we pay rent this month?" ? 8y
Zelma That is an outstanding looking spread! We had the kid conversation in week one of dating. Very similar to @Soubhiville except I was knew I didn't want children and wanted to be very clear about it. He could have gone in either direction and is happy with the decision to not have them. 8y

It's sunny in the city today 😎! We are enjoying some much needed blue skies and reading and drinking and walking to various parks before our afternoon movie.

Good news: After taking him to see Colson Whitehead the other night, Ian grabbed The Underground Railroad off our shelf and has started to read it. This is a big deal because he is NOT the biggest book person. Today I have a reading buddy!

What are YOU doing on this beautiful Saturday??

Mimi28 Laundry, lol. I know how you feel. I can hardly ever get my mom to read. Have fun!!! 8y
Zelma Puttering around the house and catching up on Litsy. Lots of coffee. Tonight a going away party for a dear friend at a cafe that hosts monthly Showtune Song-a-Longs. 😍 8y
MeganAnn Sounds like a lovely day!! ❤️ My husband is playing kickball today in the snow with his coworkers. They have an annual winter festival here called Frostival where they do all kinds of outdoor sports and winter activities. We went and watched him play for a bit earlier so now we are home warming up with hot cocoa and coffee ☕️ 8y

mom2bugnbee @MeganAnn That sounds like so much fun! 8y
mom2bugnbee On our way to my 14yo's archery tournament. We are proud archery parents -- this is her fourth year, she was a charter member of the team (combined middle/high school), she placed 3rd individually at county champs last year, & her team is the two-time defending state champs! #myKatniss 🎯 8y
MeganAnn @mom2bugnbee it's a ton of fun and there all kinds of activities depending on what you are interested in!! ❄️ Good luck to your daughter at her archery tournament! Sounds like a blast and what an interesting hobby!! 🏹🎯 8y
Vblancsbooks I just came from a walk myself & picked up my library hold 8y
BooksForEmpathy @MeganAnn That sounds so fun!! I sometimes wish we had snow ❄️!! Frostival & hot chocolate sounds so warm and cozy!! @mom2bugnbee Archery!! Wow! So impressive. I once tried it while at sleep-away camp and it was not successful 😂. Katniss is a pretty kickass role model - good for your daughter! 8y
mom2bugnbee @BooksForEmpathy The popularity of archery soared after The Hunger Games, no doubt! My Katie has the Catching Fire poster on her wall, & I agree that she's a great role model! (I call her Kate-niss. 😉) 8y
mom2bugnbee @MeganAnn @BooksForEmpathy And they won the tournament! Undefeated for two straight years! 🙌 Thank you for your kind words. We're very proud of her. 8y

One of my secret favorite books that I hold close to my heart is called Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant. I absolutely love the collection because it's all about the question: what do you cook for yourself when you're all alone and nobody is looking?

Cooking for myself (especially lunch!) is such a simple pleasure - I get to make something pretty and healthy and satisfying for one ❤️. What do YOU cook for yourself when you're all alone???

EvieBee I am looking at my copy of this book on my shelf and thinking I should pull it off the shelf and read the first essay. I love soup! I love prepping it and let it simmer slowly. 8y
josie281 Chorizo and eggs! 8y
KarenUK Often eggs, with whatever veggies I can find to add to them.... 8y

BooksForEmpathy @EvieBee84 Yes!! It's one that maybe the idea of is more profound/interesting than the individual stories. I just love thinking about and knowing what other people make for themselves when they don't have to please anybody else. I am also a fellow soup fan! Simmering slowly is just so cozy and smells delicious!! (edited) 8y
BooksForEmpathy @josie281 CHORIZO!!! Yum. @KarenUK Thanks for sharing... sounds good ☺! 8y
Lacythebookworm That book sounds great! I like to eat salami or prosciutto, a nice cheese, and crackers 😋 8y
DreesReads Soba noodles, veggies (often leftover from dinner), tofu, peanut sauce, and cold pickled veggies. 8y
saresmoore Looks delicious! I usually make an elaborate salad with unconventional ingredients and layered flavors. It's special since my kids want each meal component separated. 🙄 8y
mcipher I love doing something with veggies that the boys won't eat. Or Thai, Indian, anything non-meat and potato American boy food. 8y
Owlizabeth I love that book and I completely forgot about it until right now!! Thanks for the reminder 🤗 8y
mauveandrosysky When I'm alone I put together weird, simple meals made up of random things I'm craving. Yesterday for lunch I ate a rice cake with peanut butter and a side of tater tots and I was totally satisfied 😄 8y

Resting AND powering up for tomorrow's rally and candlelight march in San Francisco by finishing this powerhouse collections of stories from Roxane Gay, slowly savoring this incredible beer, and getting used to my two new pairs of Warby Parker glasses 🤓. I love their service! Which ones do you like?

And, more importantly, WHO is marching tomorrow??? Hope you show your faces on these days that count 🙋🏼.

Bookcation74 🙋 re both marching tomorrow and Warby Parker. I have a WP addiction! 8y

BooksForEmpathy @Bookcation74 Well, apparently I have that same addiction too! And yay for the march! @monkeygirlsmama Yes those are my more mainstream ones haha; the ones on the right are my funky "I just couldn't let them go" pair that I will need some confidence to wear out in the world! But I think I can. And want to! @Julsmarshall YES! What's the climate (energy) like there in Austin? @saresmoore Thanks!! And glad to have your spirit & solidarity! 8y

Sometimes when I nanny this is what happens and I get so happy and can't stop smiling at this little person!

I've been with this family for 7 years and I know eventually I'm going to have say goodbye as my MFT career begins and I go back to school for one more credential BUT moments like these make me never want to leave!

Does YOUR heart melt when people you love read!? ❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️.

mom2bugnbee Yes. I use the hashtag #raisingreaders often & I've always said that if I were Miss America, my platform would be children's literacy. Makes me so happy when my children want to read, visit the library, visit the bookstore, etc. 8y
LeahBergen 💗💗💗 8y
BookofWords It's so great that they have you as a nanny! We've had such a hard time with ours. And agreed with the #raisingreaders 8y

Gezemice This is awesome! I got two kids, one reads, the other used to but now only if she has to... well at least I started both of them early. 8y
saresmoore It must be your good influence! 8y
Jillsandypants This is really sweet. We used to have a nanny that was in musical theater, and every time I see my daughter get on stage to perform I say she got it from the nanny's side of the family. So I don't doubt that he gets his bookish tendencies from you 😊 8y

Had a blast at Disneyland & California Adventure yesterday! We made it almost 15 hours in both parks and rode everything we wanted to. And I finished an entire BOOK while waiting in the lines! I felt SO productive!

Favorites were Soarin' Around the World (they redid this one and it's even better than before!) and Alice in Wonderland and Hyperspace Mountain (also redone) and Toy Story Mania and Finding Nemo Submarine! What's YOUR favorite ride!?

Cinfhen Looks like such a perfect day ❤️❤️❤️ 8y
StacksNShelves I was there Saturday! My favorite ride is Peter Pan and Pinocchio! Glad you had a fun AND productive time! BTW, this pic is adorable! 8y

Here I Am: A Novel | Jonathan Safran Foer
post image

We leave tomorrow for Disneyland (!!!!) so tonight we didn't feel like cooking. There's a place around the corner from us called Wesburger. Wes makes the burgers and every Wednesday he comes out with a "burger of the week." This week was THE BIG KAHUNA burger with jack cheese, griddled pineapple, kahuna sauce, and jalapeños ??. Queso tots and my book for the sides and I'm a very happy camper! What'd you have for dinner tonight?

NovelGirl82 I made chicken strips and roasted potatoes. Nothing fancy, but the hubs was happy! 8y
BooksForEmpathy @NovelGirl82 YUM!! Did you just cook it all on one sheet pan? Best kind of meals! Minimal dishes!! 8y
monkeygirlsmama I had rice, potatoes, and chicken. 😩 I want your dinner! 😍 8y
See All 20 Comments
NovelGirl82 I actually used two, since I made enough to have some chicken to use in a later dish, but still super simple & easy clean up! 8y
Suzze I had mozzarella sticks with ranch. Envious of your trip. I was last there in 1961. 😁 (edited) 8y
BooksForEmpathy @Suzze How cool!! What was it like then?? And I ❤️ mozzarella sticks oh my!! 8y
8little_paws How's this book I'm wondering? Burger looks perfect. 8y
BooksForEmpathy @monkeygirlsmama It was delicious!! One of my favorite flavor combos - spicy jalapeño with sweet pineapple! 8y
Suzze @BooksForEmpathy I was 9. I remember my sister going on the Matterhorn ride (I was too scared) and I wanted to ride Dumbo over and over. From that trip I also remember motels along Route 66, Knotts Berry Farm, orange trees and the Hollywood sign (which I couldn't read, meaning I got glasses when we got home). (edited) 8y
mcipher That burger reminds me of s Bob's Burgers creation! 🍔 8y
DreesReads Turkey chili! 8y
BooksForEmpathy @mcipher Oooh yeahhhh! I love finding fellow Bob's Burgers fans 😉. The cookbook is pretty good too!! @AudreyMorris We had turkey chili earlier this week that I've been bringing to work every day! Cheers to leftovers that only get better with time!!! 8y
KarouBlue Any good??? ... The book that is! 8y
monkeygirlsmama @BooksForEmpathy One of my favorite pizza combos 🍕, especially if you add pepperoni. ;) 8y
Cinfhen Sounds DELISH 💕enjoy Disney 🏰 8y
Suet624 @thecomfykitchen @8little_paws I really liked the book. The material on marriage was similar to my life and while I am not Jewish I felt like I was when I was done 😂 I have enjoyed all his books so that may tell you something. 8y
GlitteryOtters Have fun on your trip!!! I lived just under a mile down the road from Disneyland for a few years in grade school & love that place so much. 💕 8y
kspenmoll Enjoy your trip! Want a bite of that🍔 burger!!! 8y
Jinjer That burger & queso tots look and sound SO GOOD! Have fun at Disney!!!! It's so bloody expensive I only got to go a couple years ago cuz a kind person who works there gave me a free ticket even though she only knows me via FB! One of the most awesome things anyone has ever done for me. Enjoy! Enjoy! 8y

Swing Time | Zadie Smith
post image

I was so excited to see Zadie Smith tonight. She is just beyond beautiful and operates on an entirely different level of intelligence and awareness and confidence.

And then, surprise! Michael Chabon introduced himself as the interviewer and my mind exploded! I have never read anything by him before 😳 and this interview showed me how much I am missing out on! What books of his are people's favorites??

GuiltyFeat He's a terrific writer and a great peer interviewer for Ms Smith. You could start with Wonder Boys or Kavalier and Clay. I adored The Yiddish Policeman's Union but not everyone else did. I finished Moonglow last night and it was outstanding. 8y

Here's my rainbow #shelfie! I know we still need a lamp and a pouf, but it's one of my favorite things to look at anyway and I dream about it when I'm away 🤗🤓.
