The Return of the King
The Return of the King: Being the Third Part of the Lord of the Rings | J.R.R. Tolkien
The third volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGS One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themAs the Shadow of Mordor grows across the land, the Companions of the Ring have become involved in separate adventures. Aragorn, revealed as the hidden heir of the ancient Kings of the West, has joined with the Riders of Rohan against the forces of Isengard, and takes part in the desperate victory of the Hornburg. Merry and Pippin, captured by Orcs, escape into Fangorn Forest and there encounter the Ents. Gandalf has miraculously returned and defeated the evil wizard, Saruman. Sam has left his master for dead after a battle with the giant spider, Shelob; but Frodo is still alivenow in the foul hands of the Orcs. And all the while the armies of the Dark Lord are massing as the One Ring draws ever nearer to the Cracks of Doom. A triumphant close . . . a grand piece of work, grand in both conception and execution. An astonishing imaginative tour de force. My bf and I read The Hobbit in July followed by the Fellowship in August, TT in September, and just finished RotK for October.

We read in anticipation of our trip to NZ and we finished just in time bc we leave tomorrow! ✈️

Finishing this series feels like saying goodbye to friends. 💔 But it also feels like an accomplishment to be done.

We plan to watch the three main films (extended editions) on our flights. 😬😆

The fantastic conclusion of the trilogy. The battles of Book 5 and the build-up to those scenes are truly epic and exciting. Some very moving parts as well, especially at the end.

Meet Roheryn, my new kindle! After my 10 yr old kindle broke last month I was beyond bummed. Roheryn, (The name of Aragorn‘s horse in LOTR, an obvious choice for all the journeys it will take me on.), is a kindle paperwhite, an unexpected gift from my sister. And my husband somehow replaced the screen of my old one, so now I have two. 😂 Time for ALL of the reading!

“Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.”Gandalf 🌋👑
Nothing like visiting dear friends. And that‘s exactly what it‘s like rereading this series. No matter how many times I read this one, I can‘t help but to get swept away in the grandest of adventures. Hate saying goodbye.. so I‘ll just say see ya later.

Definitely not my first time reading or even my first time rereading The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien.. but it is my first time reading this 1971 edition I snagged from a local vintage shop.
I‘m in love with the artwork on this cover.
Stoked to be going on this adventure again.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I watched all the movies when they first came out and I read the first book a few years later. I hadn't read much fantasy then, and it was a bit too intense for me at the time. I listened to the second book on audio a year or so ago, and I found that my mind wandered a lot. This one kept my interest and made me want to re-watch the movies.

After 6 months of listening, I FINALLY FINISHED IT! Due to changing of class schedules in the library, and honestly just Life, I didn‘t have much time to enjoy audiobook listening. HOWEVER, I very much enjoyed this one. I love the ending of the book more so than the movie- totally forgot it ended any other way! Now on to the Silmarillion ! 💙

#MiddleEarthMarch Day 21 - Dunharrow: Courses and ghosts on the Path of the Dead

I feel this is one of the least popular episodes in the book, and yet is soooo atmospheric and mysterious. I love that sense of being in contact with the dead, and so with the past. A past that doesn't reavel all is secrets (Stone of Erech anyone?).

Let's face it, ghosts in Middle-Earth are so fascinating.

#YearOfTolkien

Daisey I think it can be kind of tough to fit in with everything else because it is quite different, but I do love the dark and mysterious atmosphere of this section. 7mo

Then Gimli bowed low. ‘Nay, you are excused for my part, lord,‘ he said. ‘You have chosen the Evening; but my love is given to the Morning. And my heart forebodes that soon it will pass away forever.‘ — Gimli and Éomer talking about who is most beautiful between Arwen and Galadriel is so sweet. ?

Return of the King can be alternatively titled “How Many Times Can I Cry During a Battle Scene?”.

I am notoriously bad at reading the last book in a series. I‘ll put it off for as long as possible. I fall in love with these characters and worlds so deeply that the parting chapters are outright heartbreaking. The finale installment of the LOTR world shattered me and left me with the biggest smile all at the same time. 5/5⭐️

Up next: TAZ!

Eowyn deserves better than Aragorn or Faramir. She deserved to be allowed to slay her enemy, travel with Aragorn wherever she damn well pleased, and died in glory if she wanted to. Now Faramir suggests that she only wanted to die in battle because Aragorn rejected her. BARF.

madamereadsalot1 Faramir is a whiney man child. 🙄 I wish they had picked a less attractive actor to play him in the movies. 😂 11mo
