Days 4 and 5: The Three Musketeers and Aesop's Fables! ❤️📚
(thru ch 55) We're closing in on the home stretch for this chunkster!! We're taking a little break for Thanksgiving, then hitting the last ten chapters. Although I'm quite curious as to whether or not Milady is going to break poor Felton!!
Overall, I'm enjoying this one, but not seeing it as a book I'll pick up again. It has its moments, but sometimes the guys are just too much lol Any thoughts from you all? I know some of you have already ⬇
(thru ch49) My goodness, so much is happening! D'A is finally a musketeer!! I am cracking up about how they are literally on a battlefield and any fighting is totally just background noise. These guys are obnoxious, but also actually do seem to be good at their job - I really enjoyed the way they held off the other soldiers just so they could have a private lunch 😂 There have been a lot of fun shenanigans, but I really am curious as to what is ⬇
(thru ch39) - I haven't enjoyed the last week of chapters as much, since the guys' way of earning money mostly seems to be manipulating the women in their lives 🙄D'Artagnan really is showing is youth and inexperience here as well. At least he found Kitty a new job 😑 I've missed the slapstick from the earlier section of the book, but we'll see what happens if they ever actually head off on their tour of duty. I AM intrigued by some of the ⬇
"My compliments to Satan!"
Well. This was a wild ride. I have never really thought about classics being historical fiction of their time. This book was written about 200 years after some of the true events told. I think this is classified as an adventure book, honestly I found it more of a long winded book about soldiers run amuck. I didn't particularly like anyone and found most all of the characters immature.

"'What!" said he, "you have just lost a woman whom you thought good, charming, perfect, and now you are running after another?"
D'Artagnan felt the justice of reproach
"I love Madame Bonancieux," said he, "with all my heart; but I love 'My Lady's with my head; and by going to her house, I hope to enlighten myself as to the character she plays in court."

#RandomClassics I listened to more than half of this, which is the longest I‘ve ever given a book before bailing. At first I thought it was humorous. But then I realized there wasn‘t much difference between Richelieu, Milady, and the rest of the “villains” and D‘Artagnon, the three and all of the Musketeers. D‘Artagnon and his compatriots didn‘t pay for rent, meals, or inns. They seduced women by fair play or by foul, whether the women (cont)⬇️
Making this my priority this week. And what a week it will be. Glad I can get into this a bit and tune out the American noise for a few minutes.
These French boys. Running around with such fragile egos! It is actually interesting to read this and Men Who Hate Women at the same time.

(thru ch30) Okay, I've not been doing a great job hosting this one 😂 But I actually am really enjoying it! These guys are so ridiculous and over-the-top. And D'Artagnan finally gets to be a real musketeer... if he can find the money to get all his gear. Of course he's too busy chasing the mysterious stranger all over town haha And what do you think has happened to poor Constance??
Are you all enjoying this one or no?
Once we get to where the ⬇
#RandomClassics I‘ve seen “teh” all over the internet, and lately with the undereducated news reporters working these days, in print media. But “hte” is a new one to me.
(thru ch21) How is it going, friends? I know a few of us are a little behind 😂 So without getting into too many spoilers, I have to say that the action has been quite exciting over the last couple of chapters!! (Although I felt terrible for the horses! 😢) I didn't realize there was going to be so much political intrigue, but on the whole I feel like Dumas keeps it light enough to stay entertaining.
I am planning to stick with the chapter-a-day⬇
Still a bit behind on #randomclassics reading but chipping away, this is such a fall morning vibe!
We're 14 chapters in and I'm only just now checking to see how everyone is doing 😂 The first couple of chapters were a bit of a struggle for me, but I am starting to enjoy it now. This book is a lot more snarky than I was anticipating. And even though D'Artagnan is a hot-headed mess, I'm finding him entertaining. How is it going for all of you? Have any of you decided to bail? Any favorite characters/scenes?
Life‘s too short.
I did not know this meaning of “levee”! #randomclassics
Getting ready to start this #RandomClassic !! I'm curious to know what translations everyone is reading? @janeycanuck shared an article yesterday with some fantastic information on the various English choices - https://welovetranslations.com/2022/07/13/whats-the-best-translation-of-the-thre... - and reading it made me purchase a different copy! I really wanted to read the two volume hardcovers that I have had on my shelf for so ⬇
Hey friends!! We'll be starting this #RandomClassic on Tuesday!! I am here to take a poll: do we want to stick with one chapter a day, which means it will take us a little over two months to read this; or go with two chapters a day and finish in early November? I'm slightly inclined to stick with the single chapter because I have a lot of buddy reads for October, but I also understand if we don't want it to drag out so long haha ⬇

I'm planning to post The Red Pony discussion this weekend. Hopefully⬇
My second weekend in a row at HPB ended in a massive book haul… so here goes:
I ❤️❤️❤️ the Count of Monte Cristo. So how can I possibly go wrong with the Three Musketeers?
I got a few books in Maine today….
Having a little readathon day to see if I can finish The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. I have around 400 pages left. 🤞
I‘m hoping to get your funny bone ready for holiday happiness! Thanksgiving funnies start tomorrow!

Certainly different than any film adaptation I‘ve ever seen. I quite enjoyed it though. It‘s not as much of a fast paced adventure but more of a comedy/drama with humor and intrigue as its strong points. 17th century France certainly had a different idea of what “honorable” looked like. 😅 Lady de Winter had a much larger role and is definitely not a sympathetic character. The Musketeers each have their unique personalities. ⬇️
Athos trolling the prison guards had me laughing so hard!
I never knew Athos, Porthos, and Aramis weren‘t really their names but more like nicknames. I‘m loving this book so much. ❤️
This will always be the song I associate with The Three Musketeers. 😅❤️ I know it‘s obvious, but it is what it is. 🤷♀️

#BookNotes
I made a 20 book long list for Book Bingo this month and what do I do on the 1st? Pick one that‘s not on the list! Thank goodness for those free spaces! 😅🤣
Pro tip: if you are making a #14books14weeks2023 list, you shouldn‘t put 5 classics on it if you actually would like a chance to complete the challenge. You definitely shouldn‘t include this one…I‘ve been making my way through this all month and am SO ready to be done with it!
@TheHeartlandBookFairy
I enjoyed reading this classic book. I loved the plot of the book and the characters were great. I rated this book a 5 out of 5 stars. This is the seventh book completed in the #RushAThon readathon hosted by @Andrew65
A little late in the month, but up next, my #doublespin for July.
It‘s also on my #14books14weeks2023 list (8 of 14)

Here we go! My stack for the #14books14weeks2023 challenge: read 14 books in the 14 weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day! All of these are books I own but have not read with the exception of 2 library books. I can‘t wait to cross them off my TBR! Thank you for the invite, @CoverToCoverGirl and thank you for hosting, @TheHeartlandBookFairy 📚
Want to join in the fun, @Kelly326 🥰
Wow I‘m so glad to be done with this book… it was for a book club and although it is a classic and the story and writing have their merits, I just really did not enjoy reading it. I felt like the story was way too long and had us shooting off in random directions the whole time. I will say in the end everything was addressed and closed up which is why it‘s getting a so so and not a pan.
This is an amusingly silly caper. The plot is pretty meandering and twisty - you can tell it was initially written as a series - which is a bit hard to follow at times. It's quite the thriller at the end. And D'Artagnan is an endearingly hot-headed idiot.
#OnThisDay in 2002, celebrations began in France to honour what would have been the 200th birthday of author Alexandre Dumas. The celebrations would continue throughout the year, culminating in Dumas' ashes being interred in the Pantheon to lie in honour with other great authors of France. Then President Jacques Chirac acknowledged the racism that had kept the celebrated author from his rightful place of rest. #HistoryGetsLIT

This book was such great fun. So many hilarious, raucous scenes with the Musketeers. And Milady - what a villain! She was terrifying. The final 200 pages I couldn‘t put down and read straight through. Onto War and Peace!
I truly enjoyed the marvelous work of the narrator Guy Mott who gave each character a distinct voice and even managed to have a singing voice of a woman and did that well. I‘ve never seen any of the movies so the story was unknown to me. I enjoyed it and see why we are still reading it and retelling it after hundreds of years.

Day 154.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.
This was a little tricky to get into at first; the story took a while to get going, which is understandable given its source, but about two thirds in I found it unputdownable and I really enjoyed the story. I would recommend as a good read, but be prepared to persist with the initial slow start.
