Really enjoyed this story of Andy and his daughter, Charlie fleeing from “the shop”, a government agency that conducted tests using a drug in the late 60s on Andy and his wife, Vicky. Each obtained different abilities like telekinesis, mind domination, and pyrokinesis. Definitely worth the read! #psionic abilities

East of Eden | John Steinbeck

Pickpick

I ended up LOVING this book. Yes, it‘s bleak, but it‘s a lesson in humanity and free will. I‘m still taking notes bc the writing is wonderful and I love the philosophizing that goes on by the narrator. Steinbeck did have a degree in I believe English lit and Philosophy from Stanford and it shows. So happy I read it.

Librarybelle Yay! Congratulations on finishing it! 1mo
Tamra It‘s fabulous! I most loved looking for the Easter eggs, re: connections to & departures from the Genesis story. (Not that I am a biblical scholar - not at all!) 1mo

JanuarieTimewalker13 @Librarybelle thank you so much!! I‘m still taking notes…this book…. 1mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Tamra yeah, I have little knowledge in the Bible (especially Old Testament) even though I‘ve done the whole shebang of communion and confirmation in Catholic Church. (edited) 1mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Tamra @Librarybelle were you thrown off finding out that Lee stole a book from Samuel….I don‘t know why this is such a head trip for me….was this an example of timshel? 1mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 Samuel and Lee were my favorite characters that‘s why it threw me off when Lee stole his book but maybe Steinbeck considered that a compliment? Now I have to read Meditations….. 1mo
Tamra @JanuarieTimewalker13 that‘s a good guess. I also appreciate the characters are not “perfect”, they have quirks & flaws. 1mo
Tamra @JanuarieTimewalker13 me too - love them! Wise and they learn from mistakes. 1mo
Librarybelle That‘s a good thought, @JanuarieTimewalker13 ! 1mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Librarybelle @Tamra I need to speak with John Steinbeck. Lol my gut feeling is that someone had once stolen a book from JS. (edited) 1mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 “Suddenly Lee felt good. He wondered whether Sam‘l Hamilton had ever missed his book or known who stole it. It had seemed to Lee the only clean pure way was to steal it. And he still felt good about it……”but of course he knew who took it who else would have stolen Marcus Aurelius?” (edited) 1mo
MemoirsForMe I‘m a big fan of Steinbeck‘s writing too! You may want to read his Journal about East of Eden. 1mo

Bleak book with pops of levity. I‘m sticking with it because of lines like this (spoken from Lee to Samuel) “There are no ugly questions except those clothed in condescension.” That is something I‘ve felt but never thought of the words to put the feeling to. Steinbeck won me with that line.

Librarybelle Yay! You‘re sticking with it! 2mo

I started listening to this audiobook on 3/26/24 and finished tonight. I had to wait for holds, I was reading other books in between, but it has been a constant companion. Man, I am going to have separation anxiety from finishing this series. I LOVED it and it spanned the whole summer, and the first week of fall for me. So many interesting characters in addition to the regular gang. Charlie Goodnight was in every book and I always got a kick out of him. I had never heard of the do nothing rental person on Twitter/iInstagram, so I was intrigued. He doesn‘t charge anything, but his transportation costs(if a meal is involved, they pay) He then writes about experience on line. Most of the requests are quite calm. Desert Rose Book 2. The books starts out with a tragic revelation for Harmony. Harmony‘s sisters fly to Las Vegas to be with her and her 5 year old son, Eddie. The title serves as a double entendre..which I thought was interesting. A Road trip to NY ensues and all kinds of crazy happens in the midst of deep grief. I loved both books. McMurtry is highly readable and crafts a great yarn, he reminds of of Stephen King in that way.

One of the most unique books I‘ve ever read. At first I was bored to tears, yet the premise kept me hanging on…once an event happened, I was intrigued. I‘m not going into more detail than that. I will say one thing: what if you knew nothing of your past but being in a cage with 39 women…you were a child and had no reference for anything they spoke about…how would that form you as a human?
If you are into character more than plot, read this.

I LOVED this book!! It was such a great snapshot in time. Set in Hong Kong between 1949 and 1950. The writing was superb…one warning…it was probably me but it took me so long to get through. That being said, I enjoyed it. It gives a really balanced look at how “New” China came into power and how the Missionaries had to leave for Formosa (Taiwan) and HK. Looked at the issues of colonialism. Plus, an affair which was not embraced…he was married.

JanuarieTimewalker13 #HongKong Highly recommend! This is my library copy which is first edition…probably had a dustcover at some point. Very impressed that the library had this 72 year old book! I really didn‘t do justice to the book with this review. It was a complex book..there was also the white superiority complex that played into people‘s perception of them as a couple. The premise was very interesting. I‘m in minority here with So-So rating, but I couldn‘t wait for it to end….I think it just could‘ve been edited down a bit and the characters annoyed me. It lacked “heart” to me, or it may just be me at this time. I‘m not sure…it followed a book I really enjoyed, which was published in the 90s and I think that may have played into it. Maybe it was just too cold and futuristic for me.

I loved this audiobook. Poignant story. The Author‘s note was interesting too. I remember the crash of 587….at first they thought it was terrorism-2 months after 9/11. When it was ascertained it wasn‘t, it kind of dropped out of the consciousness of the public. But the Dominicans had a hard loss here, so many of their own. This was a well crafted YA story. #DominicanRepublic narrated by author and another woman. Washington Heights, Puerto Plata.

WOW! This book actually had me gagging….if it were any other author I would‘ve abandoned the book close to the beginning. But the master storyteller kept me plugging along. This was true horror. Extremely creepy yet at the same time covers the height of COVID well. Dare I say it was nauseatingly good? Yup.

dabbe Hello there, sweet kitty-on-the-legs! 🖤🐾🖤 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @dabbe Meow🐾😘 I‘m Dean Martin, I own my mom…I‘m 17 and she has to constantly pick up my vomit and feed me 4 times a day bc I need extra food bc I vomit. Recently, I‘ve taken to peeing outside my box. My mom took me to vet to figure out what the heck is going on. I got a shot of antibiotic and B12….the vet thinks I have arthritis. She wants $80 a month for arthritis shots which I‘m sure my mom will go for. She asked if she could get one. Lol🐾 (edited) 1y

dabbe @JanuarieTimewalker13 Well, Mr. Dean Martin, you are the coolest cat in the club! Your mom sounds like an amazing person who's taking beyond-excellent care of you! #coolcatkitty 🖤🐾🖤 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @dabbe My mom says thank you❤️she feeds me Royal Canin 12 plus…it has helped me and that other cat who lives here who I care not to mention bc she steals my shine…I was here first!! But mom is a softie and knew this cat who lives with us was languishing at a shelter, so she decided to ruin my life and adopt her. That was almost 14 years ago and I still haven‘t totally forgiven her. I AM the coolest cat!!! And you are psychic bc that was on my 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Card at the shelter!!!! It precisely read “Charlie, one cool cat” Mom changed my name to Dean Martin bc she figured my tux was perfect and I was born in June🐾 (edited) 1y

Wow!! Just finished the audiobook which has an author interview at the end. I am so happy I finally decided to read this book. Highly recommend. It was fascinating. It made me cry. It made me think about how little time has really gone by from the years of slavery and it made me horrified that it went on a mere 100 years before my birth. I‘m still reading the physical copy bc I want to reinforce some stuff in my brain and write others down.

I greatly enjoyed this book. Especially the 1950 timeline…it runs two timelines 1950 and 2014. It had been on my TBR for a few years and I‘m happy I listened to it. I think it‘s best to go in with no idea of what it‘s about…try it, you‘ll like it!
Is anyone else having trouble posting a photo? This my second post where I can‘t post a photo.I don‘t understand why. #CanadianAuthor #Vermont

JanuarieTimewalker13 I had only one problem with this book. She must have used the word “detritus” about 10 times…it became annoying. Lol 1y

I can‘t seem to download my photo. I listened to the audiobook and Sissy Spacek does a great job at narrating. I really enjoyed the introduction by Stephen King and the book itself. It wasn‘t frightening, I just found it so sad.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m just re-listening to SK‘s introduction again and his “Cheerio Casserole” is a riot. He fried cheerios and peanut butter in Wesson oil in college. 1y

JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa awhhh, thank you!!! We have a lot in common….Vegan here!! Since 2012….I was 50, so that‘s pretty old to finally “get it”. I studied French too…4 semesters of college French. And, of course, cats🐾 I lthinkyour screen name is great! And, it‘s still a dream of mine to get to Australia…I wanted to go for 40th birthday, but it never happened. I got halfway there…lol… Oahu. New Yorker here transplanted into NJ, via Nevada. 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 snap!..snap!..snap! I love it. Here‘s another one, lol the closest I have managed to get into USA is Hawaii (Oahu too)! We are estranged parallel twins (or something like that haha). I like your screen name too 🙂. I‘m a Melbourne girl transplanted into the QLD Gold Coast, via England and China. Lol I say ‘girl‘ but I think I might be past that! 😂 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa you gotta keep the girl alive!!! Yeah I‘m an old girl. Lol my screen name is from A Discovery of Witches….I loved the Middle English spelling of Januarie and the protagonist (forgot her name) was a Timewalker. Ouila!! Let‘s see if I can do this: je suis une Capricorne!! Wow!! England and China!! Very cool!! Uhmm, do you watch Max and Occy on YT? You‘d love them…I think he‘s in NSW now trying to renovate an off the grid cabin. 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 oh I‘ve never heard of Max and Occy! Now I am addicted. I just took a look! What a nice bloke, and such a cute pretty dog. I feel his renovating pain, I only just moved to my Gold Coast house two weeks ago and I feel it lol. Et, je suis une Gémeaux. (I got that from Google ?). Je suis une vielle fille aussi (That one was from me!, hehe). I like your spelling -ie. I am running out of word space now! ?? 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa C‘est magnifique!!(always my back up French phrase..lol) oh there‘s a huge backstory for Max and Occy. It used to be Max and Lee, but they broke up…very sad story there…but I always thought Max was genuine and definitely a likable bloke, and Occy is just the sweetest pup. I LOVED his Van Life vids taking place all around Australia!! Oh wow!! The Gold Coast? Then you are familiar with the human Occhi also!! Renovating is NOT easy 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 Omigoodness I am a bad Australian! Lol. (I had to Google Occhi). You mean the surfer? 🏄 I have much to learn in my new State! 😆 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa Haha! Yes! Mark Occhilupo….I went through a surfing phase big time- watched tons of documentaries and films-Wish I had learned when I was younger…I‘ve only done SUP. Yeah the Aussies are cool. I remember Shaun Tomson from back in the day. Believe that‘s his name. I love the Australian flag too…then I went through a Bondi Rescue phase too…. Hahahahaha…Hawai‘i and Australia are linked in my brain. (edited) 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa It just dawned on me that you‘re in Queensland Gold Coast….not NSW…my bad!! Is there a Gold Coast in NSW also? 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 I don‘t think there is one. But our airport is divided right down the middle of the tarmac by a State border. You get off the plane in NSW then walk into the actual airport terminal and suddenly you‘re on Queensland turf. It‘s quite funny! 😆 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa that‘s hilarious…ok, I must look at a map of Oz😀I met a lot of Australian people back in 1990 at a conference in Manhattan, and these were some of the funniest people I had ever met. Then I met more Australians in Cyprus and Greece. I was pen pals wit a bloke by the name of Les Jury…..I think I still have his letters…pretty sure he was from Sydney. Sadly, he passed many years ago. Melbourne-Stan and Maria Kastoras 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 and now Charmayne! 😆. That is quite a list!! I think sometimes we do think we are quite funny. It‘s all Dad jokes though lol! Sorry to hear about your friend Les too. What a great name he had. My brain is a bit fuzzy today, we epoxied the garage floor yesterday and gees it was so fumey! 🫠🫣 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa Actually, they all passed, but he passed first…Thank you, yeah, Les was a really nice guy, very funny, and lovable. They all had Beta Thalassemia major like I do. Uhmm, I hope you wore a mask!!! Oh, I detest any kind of chemical-y smells. 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 What a coincidence, that sounds rare. I looked it up. I have an iron deficiency without anaemia. It‘s a new diagnosis for me. On a different note I am especially happy today! I just found two houses around the corner from me with 5 cats between them! 😻 Such cuteness!!! Do you have a Zambrero‘s near you? I just had a quesadilla stack from down the road for tea and it was good, my first one lol! 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa no Zambrero‘s here…not in NJ…oddly, I had chipotle for lunch!! Lol 1y
thegreensofa There we go with our Snap again! 😂 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa lol. Quick question: is Japanese stationery big in Australia? I‘m obsessed with Japanese planners, specifically, Hobonichi. 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 It‘s not exactly big but it does have a trendy following. We have some great quirky Japanese shops. I love washi tape myself, I am always buying it but never actually use it anywhere. I‘m too scared to ruin it! 😂. I will have to investigate Hobonichi. And I love Japanese pens. And Japanese notebooks! (Again I am too scared to use them as well though! 😄). 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa use your washi!!! You only live once!!! This is planner season so all the 2024 planners come out now. It‘s so exciting…just hope my cell phone has proper service bc sometimes it‘s sketchy up by me….I have to get my Hobonichi-ing on tonight…my time…your time it‘s tomorrow (edited) 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa sorry my response was delayed…I didn‘t even see the notification. Do you like fountain pens? I‘m not much of a fountain pens aficionado, but I love the Pentel Clena…which is reasonable at about $6 American. 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 I just ran to check when I read your message, and I‘ve got two of those pens! One green and one blue. It turns out they‘re the exact pens that are my favourite go-to‘s. I use the for everything! I didn‘t realise they were a fountain pen. Blow me down! (Lol). Do you use yours for everything or just your planners? I would make too much mess with a traditional fountain lmao, my hand would smudge it all over the place! 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa Sorry! I was ambiguous….no, the Clena is NOT a fountain pen. It‘s just a regular gel pen, but they are magnificent!! A good starter fountain pen is the Platinum Preppy…reasonable…$5.50 American….the 03 is a nice size nib. My sweet spot on gel pens like the Clena is .4. I use Jet Pens out of Cali for my pens and Tombows, but Tokyo Pen Shop may be better for Australian delivery. (edited) 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa I use the Clena primarily for my techos…techo is planner in Japanese. For checks I use my free Uniball Jetstream that I get from ordering techos from Hobonichi. For my Weeks (portable planner) I use a uniball one. It fits well on the cover in cover. Check out Hobonichi….you will fall in love…this launch for 2024 was OUTSTANDING. The selection of Weeks and Planner Covers is fantastic !!! 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa there‘s definitely a link between readers and planners/journals…I find that people who like to read typically like to write also. This has been the greatest hobby for me in my older years 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 I love uniball as well! Sorry I have done my neck and been unable to use my phone or even lift anything even my hands. I can only do small things a few minutes at a time. Apologies for not replying sooner. I love planners but I usually use them like a bullet journal. Sorry its all I can handle to type at the moment:(. Apologies Xox I‘ll write some more when I get a nother wind. 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa no need to apologize!! Feel better!! I‘m going through some kind of feet/legs issue…hard to walk. Been taking 1 ES Tylenol a day bc I‘m scared to take more. This aging thing is tough…I‘m guessing it‘s osteoarthritis, and it‘s the way life may be but I have an appointment with a podiatrist soon. Hope you feel better!!! Don‘t do anything to aggravate it. Oh my. It‘s so hard. Sending you positive vibes and prayers!!💐 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 Thank you! ☺️. Sending positive vibes back at you 😘. Good luck at the podiatrist, I am thinking of you. Xo💨 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa thank you so much!! It was what I thought…Achilles tendinitis in both feet. Yikes! I know I‘m going to need PT (physio). 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa Hope you are doing better!! 1y
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 How is your Physiotherapy going for your feet? I hope you have recovered or are doing a lot better? My osteo has been working on my neck and I‘ve been able to read again. And..it‘s planner buying season how fun! I went mad on Etsy and bought myself a new cat theme diary for work. 😇 13mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa So happy you are feeling better!!! My feet are still messed up and I haven‘t started PT yet bc I find myself with little to no ambition!! I have a blood condition that works against me too…AND, when the temp drops, I want to stay in PJS all day!!! I have to get my feet sorted out soon bc the impact on my life has been big!! 13mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa Fun!!! I love journaling!!! Launch date for Hobonichi is Sept 1 so I was ordering at 10 pm August 31. Lol I‘m set with my planners, but I‘ve been buying from Stationery Pal (Hong Kong) and just got an order in today from Journalsay (also Hong Kong). So inexpensive, shipping takes a little while, but worth it!!!! I‘m into this for almost 4 years now so I‘ve learned a lot!! I Etsy is cool! 13mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa I have not a cavity but a canyon in one of my teeth I have to get fixed too….do you know the feeling when problems hit you from every angle and you just want to retreat into bed and eat a lot of pasta? Lol that‘s where I‘m at. So great hearing from you!!! 13mo
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 Mashed potato is a great comfort food too yum! 😋 . That‘s what I‘m going to munch on while it‘s a cold wet day in my tropical climate (supposedly!) where I live. If it drops any further I‘m joining you with pasta! 😃 13mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa I neglected to say I‘m so happy you can read again and your neck is better!! It‘s the things like that in life that matter!!! And yes, mashed potatoes are fantastic. I‘m so old school I just had a great cup of coffee I made in my on the stovetop percolator. I didn‘t manually grind my beans today but I have LaVazza Coffee which is pretty good. Otherwise I drink Pacific Rim coffee from Whole Foods….it‘s delectable! 13mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa always great chatting with you…hospital day today so I have to get going….meh…. 13mo
thegreensofa Thank you ☺️. Our chats are good. And best wishes for the hospital! 😊💛 13mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa So true!! They are good!! Today is a good day bc I‘m staying home. Just trying to get things together here. It‘s so strange that when I was younger I always wanted to be out and about with people, now it‘s exciting to stay home. Lol Aging is a trip! 13mo
thegreensofa @JanuarieTimewalker13 I agree!!! Staying home is the new LBD (little black dress) 🤭. I work at home these days too so I am just beside myself. Let the world do its own thing, I am doing mine! hehe 😆 13mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @thegreensofa Word!!! Borrowing a term from the 90s. Lol it may have gone back to the 80s. I feel ancient and my bones feel like they are from the Pleistocene Epoch. Lol….But as long as you still manage to have a little fun, it‘s all good! 13mo

Just purchased this baby….I had the tagged edition but It doesn‘t have footnotes like this one….and let‘s face it, this is to die for….French flaps and deckled edges. I‘ll give the other edition to the library after I finish the book. It will be nice to compare the two. My buddy read partner has the same one. Wish me luck. Scary book, was not expecting this. I expected the Blake Crouch who wrote Dark Matter, not Dean Koontz…this is about a psychopath serial killer and definitely not my cup of tea. It was a page turner, but I almost DNF‘d it 3 times…ughhh, never again. For me this was a book I should‘ve never read. For someone who likes serial killer psycho paths, this will be right up your alley. His first book.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Please note it‘s part of a series. I won‘t be continuing. Way too dark for me. 1y

Such a fun read!!! The time travel makes no sense, but if you shut that part of your brain off, you‘ll have a grand time.. I LOVED it!! I love how she goes from 18 to 51 in her first “slide”. The shock of her older body shook her. Thank God we age chronologically bc we have time to get used to it. Well worth the read. I had a great time.

Texreader Sounds fun!! 1y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Texreader it was so much fun!! I needed that book bc I started Desert Places by Blake Crouch (his first book is a horror book) and it was just too twisted, I needed a respite. This was so much fun- set in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. But she travels too. 1y

I toiled a bit through this one but it was worth it. Set in 1920, in the North of England, a soldier who survived WW1 restores a medieval painting. During his time in the country he finds people who help him start his journey of healing from the horrors of war. There was something so comforting about this story. It won the Booker in 1980. #UK

This was a very good story….I loved it!! I didn‘t start out loving it…but if you hang on, everything falls into place. Creatively written…Isaac passes on and leaves his friends, who really are just friends with him, not so much each other, to discover each other. I think it‘s a great book for anyone but especially teenage boys. #Australia
