This Changes Everything
This Changes Everything: Capitalism Vs. The Climate | Naomi Klein
The most important book yet from the author of the international bestseller The Shock Doctrine, a brilliant explanation of why the climate crisis challenges us to abandon the core free market ideology of our time, restructure the global economy, and remake our political systems. In short, either we embrace radical change ourselves or radical changes will be visited upon our physical world. The status quo is no longer an option. In This Changes Everything Naomi Klein argues that climate change isnt just another issue to be neatly filed between taxes and health care. Its an alarm that calls us to fix an economic system that is already failing us in many ways. Klein meticulously builds the case for how massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to simultaneously reduce gaping inequalities, re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild our gutted local economies. She exposes the ideological desperation of the climate-change deniers, the messianic delusions of the would-be geoengineers, and the tragic defeatism of too many mainstream green initiatives. And she demonstrates precisely why the market has notand cannotfix the climate crisis but will instead make things worse, with ever more extreme and ecologically damaging extraction methods, accompanied by rampant disaster capitalism. Klein argues that the changes to our relationship with nature and one another that are required to respond to the climate crisis humanely should not be viewed as grim penance, but rather as a kind of gifta catalyst to transform broken economic and cultural priorities and to heal long-festering historical wounds. And she documents the inspiring movements that have already begun this process: communities that are not just refusing to be sites of further fossil fuel extraction but are building the next, regeneration-based economies right now. Can we pull off these changes in time? Nothing is certain. Nothing except that climate change changes everything. And for a very brief time, the nature of that change is still up to us.

Currently reading This Changes Everything and feeling like my book club hates me. Over 400 pages of doom ahead of me I‘m afraid. Not like it‘s not important, but it‘s what I already know. Why did everyone vote for this?!

But on a sweeter note…it‘s Nova‘s first photo bomb. I‘ll never be mad at a cute dog photo bomb.

Naomi Klein just kept teaching me so many things and it never got boring or repetitive or annoying. She covered such a huge amount of information and was able to keep it very interesting. This book is IMPORTANT to read. Obviously, global warming is a huge issue that is going to have to be dealt with in one way or another. Klein went through each option we as a society have and why they will/won't work and what is/isn't working. Just amazing.

keithmalek I wrote an environmental column that addressed this very issue: https://medium.com/the-haven/iceberg-bigger-than-your-mom-breaks-off-greenland-2... 4y

"There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about." ~ Margaret J. Wheatley

It‘s a conundrum that while the economy is suffering, the environment is thriving in many places due to shelter in place orders. Wondering what will change and what will remain the same. ?

First book for graduate school. To those who are unaware, I‘m currently working as an archaeologist but decided it was time for me to go back to school and get my masters in Environmental Science and try to save the world instead of just preserving our past (which is incredibly rewarding in and of itself) but there needs to be a world in which people can appreciate the past first.

Very important read! 🌎 “Forget everything you think you know about global warming. The really inconvenient truth is that it‘s not about carbon—it‘s about capitalism. The convenient truth is that we can seize this existential crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better.”

Happy earth day!

3 fiction and 3 non fiction favourites of mine engaging the struggle for an optimistic future for our planet. It‘s a terrifying, depressing fight that I fear will define my generation‘s time on earth, but these books show me how much beauty and hope there is in humanity‘s relationship with nature and how much there is still to fight for. Here‘s to us as readers, educators and thoughtful citizens working for a just future

Freespirit It's so frustrating when our leaders deny what's happening 😁 6y

Today I saw the Ice Watch installation at the Tate Modern and was incredibly moved and sad to see them melting. I touched arctic ice with my own hands and wondered how many more generations would get to know that ice existed, even have the chance of touching it. it made me remember reading This Changes Everything and how it made me feel.

Freespirit I wish climate change was top of the list of world issues. Here in Australia most people want it to be but our government is lagging the world😢 6y
Emilymdxn @Freespirit the climate (and everything else) has taken a back seat in Britain as the government eats itself alive and starves its people to death with universal credit. I‘d love to believe I‘ll be proud of something my government does one day... but it could be a while 6y
Freespirit Very sad..it's the same everywhere☹️ 6y

One of the best books I‘ve ever read, I recommend this book to everyone concerned about the state of the world today. Beautifully written, explains very complex concepts in a holistic, comprehensive, empathetic way. (I still wish wonderful writers would say LGBTQ instead of gay and lesbian but I can‘t be angry with Naomi klein). I feel outraged and grief stricken yes, but I‘ve learned about how the world can be saved and what we can work towards.

A 22-hour audiobook about the social/political movement needed to save the planet's ecosystem via strategies that redistribute the world's wealth to those who've been denied it is a tough sell, and so I've enlisted my mom's cardboard cutout of The Boss to help me. He's sporting the wristband I got at the #noDAPL protest. Mr. Springsteen did not give me permission to use his likeness. Available on #Libby and wherever #audiobooks are sold.

Why is it so hard for people to make sure all the pieces make it back inside the box? #AudioPuzzling

I'm an hour into this #audiobook (of 20!) and my immediate feeling is that it's perhaps a little inaccessible for anyone outside the choir, which saddens me, because it really is compelling in a lot of ways.

This one has been on my #TBR for a couple of years. Climate change is real, and so is the money behind denying it!

#changes
#SeptemBowie

tpixie The biggest problem with climate change is that India and China are much bigger players than the United States and they don't have all the restrictions that we have already put in place. That doesn't mean we can't do better, but I wonder how much impact we really have if the rest of the world doesn't help out. I would love to see that research. 7y

This seems an appropriate 1st read for 2017.

"Or maybe we do look—really look—but then, inevitably, we seem to forget. Remember and then forget again. Climate change is like that; it‘s hard to keep it in your head for very long. We engage in this odd form of on-again-off-again ecological amnesia for perfectly rational reasons. We deny because we fear that letting in the full reality of this crisis will change everything. And we are right."

our economic system and our planetary system are now at war. Or, more accurately, our economy is at war with many forms of life on earth, including human life. What the climate needs to avoid collapse is a contraction in humanity‘s use of resources; what our economic model demands to avoid collapse is unfettered expansion. Only one of these sets of rules can be changed, and it‘s not the laws of nature.

Terrifying and uplifting.
The basic thesis here is that the machine that is Capitalism is by nature in direct opposition to the changes that need be made if we are to keep global climate change from making our world uninhabitable.
The good part is learning how many movements are currently underway to stop the extraction of fossil fuels in its tracks and how these same movements bring social and economic justice with them as core principals.

I hope this book DOES change everything. Klein points out that we have the solutions to slow down global warming. Also, I would like to add, we still have trees (those magic, 'cleaning carbon dioxide from the air' machines). Why have we constructed a world where breaking an international environmental treaty earns little punishment and breaking an international trade agreement doesn't?, and why are we breaking one by helping the other? We're nuts.

Naomi Klein's vision of how we can move forward in the face of inevitable climate change is one that makes me hopeful/despair at the same time. If it clarified anything, it's how urgently we need to take action and how reluctant everyone is to do so.
