Romeo And/Or Juliet
Romeo And/Or Juliet: A Chooseable-path Adventure | Ryan North
Romeo loves Juliet. Or Rosaline. And Juliet loves Romeo. Or Viola. Or Orlando. It's Shakespeare as you've never played him before. In this choose-your-own-path version of Romeo and Juliet, you choose where the story goes every time you read! What if Romeo never met Juliet? What if Juliet got really buff instead of moping around the castle all day? What if they teamed up to take over Verona with robot suits? Whatever your adventure, you're guaranteed to find lots of romance, lots of epic fight scenes, and plenty of questionable decision-making by very emotional teens. All of the endings--there are over a hundred--feature beautiful illustrations by some of the greatest artists working today, including New York Times bestsellers Kate Beaton, Noelle Stevenson, Randall Munroe, and Jon Klassen. Packed with exciting choices, fun puzzles, secret surprises, terrible puns, and more than a billion possible storylines, Romeo and/or Juliet offers a new experience every time you read it. You can choose to play as Romeo or Juliet (obviously) but you can also play as both of them, or as Juliet's nurse, or, if you're good, you can even unlock a fourth playable character! That's right. We figured out how to have unlockable characters in books. Choose well, and you may even get to write the world's most awkward choose-your-own sex scene.

Loved this show - so much fun and so much glitter! Brilliant ending to this year‘s West End pilgrimage. 🤩(And, speaking as someone who had to do all of Shakespeare at uni, I agree, Romeo is a douche with no upper body strength...)

Been enjoying my can o' wine and Shakespeare In Love, a particularly fun play to watch just after finishing Romeo and/or Juliet. But just after the second act started, it started pouring rain suddenly and we're now paused huddling under the sound booth overhang. In probably seven years of going to Shakespeare in the Park this has never happened to us before!

Eyelit That‘s unfortunate! I went to an outdoor theater for a Shakespeare fest many years ago and it started pouring in the second half of Othello. the actors valiantly tried to keep going but eventually had to admit defeat. My friend and I were completely drenched by the time we made it back to the car. Still remember that night fondly, tho. 😂🌧🤷🏻‍♀️ 6mo
WhatWouldJaneDo It was totally unexpected tonight too! The rain didn't last terribly long, but once it stopped they announced it would be at least 20-30 minutes to go through their drying process and do tech checks (and that was assuming everything worked). Our chairs were soaked and that would put me way past my bedtime so we headed home. We have season passes so we can go as much as we'd like, so we might try again next weekend. 6mo

Very fun Choose-your-own-adventure Shakespeare with tons of Bard in-jokes. I'm a completionist so this involved lots of book marks and multiple fingers holding spots to try and make sure I found all the endings. I especially loved the side quests into other plays or characters, and my fave was getting to be a noir detective as Rosaline (proving she had much better things to do than hook up with Romeo when he was pining for/stalking her).

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I loved this and I‘m toying with reading it aloud to my 8th grade students and letting them vote on making the decisions. 6mo

A bit much, but fun nonetheless.
What‘s interesting is when I went through as Juliet, I maintained my independence, never winding up with Romeo, even as I explored other options.
But when I went through as Romeo, I wound up with Juliet, successfully, with no need for anyone to die.
The nurse path is super-annoying.
And I think there are a couple other paths I didn‘t stumble on. I‘ll keep this around and pick it up again to see where else I land.

julesG So Romeo is the one needing a relationship? 11mo
Sweettartlaura @julesg in this version apparently so. Although when I‘m Romeo, Juliet is open to it. She just has to feel like it‘s her choice no matter what. Which is fine by me 💁🏻‍♀️ 11mo

A delight. I played through a few different times, then I just flipped through reading the endings and whatever else caught my eye. I loved the unlockable playable character and other Easter eggs that I‘ll spoil in a comment below, for anyone who‘s curious.

zembla You can play as Rosaline in a hard-boiled detective storyline, and as Nurse in an old-school adventure game called NURSE QUEST. There are also mini-stories of Macbeth, A Midsummer Night‘s Dream, and Pyramus & Thisbe. This book is clearly made with love, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. 2y

LiteraryinLititz I liked this one. You don‘t “read” it as much as you just bounce from blurb to blurb depending on what decisions you make. I found it fun but didn‘t read all the parts. 2y
Onlaughterandliteracy I didn‘t love it. It was fun but I couldn‘t read all of it. And some of it was plain ridiculous!! Which I think was intended, but it got a little too much for me! (edited) 2y
readinginthedark I really enjoyed it! It‘s not meant to be taken seriously or read straight through, but I‘ve always loved CYOA books, and this even gave me some new perspective on the original (although I‘m not sure it was meant to 😆). 2y

It was witty and well written and I loved that North added his own spin to these characters by giving them modern traits and dialogue.
My only problem with this is that after 20 path selections, I ended up repeating the same path and getting the same ending and it became tedious because it's a 400 page book and I was stuck with the first 100 for path selections.

Bailedbailed

It's not that this was necessarily bad but there is NO way I can figure out how to read all the possible paths and because of that I can't count it (in my heart or mind) as a fully read book. I so rarely bail on books I can tell you the last time I did was about 3-4 years ago. It's so hard for me to bail but I have to, I cannot put anymore effort into this one.

IamIamIam Sounds like a headache! 3y
Ms_T Sounds like you gave it a good go. Time to move on though. 3y
AmandaL You're better than me. I read one path, skimmed the rest, and counted it as read. 3y

readinginthedark 😂I'm so crazy; I wrote down each thing I chose and went through the paths in a totally obsessive way. But I also took breaks between reading them so I wouldn't lose interest. Of course, Romeo and Juliet has never been my favorite Shakespeare, so I found laughing at it very refreshing. 3y
Smangela @readinginthedark that's the direction I was going!! But I was like, no stop, "I can't put that much effort into this" mainly because I've had about 5 books out from the library for probably 7 months ???? 3y
Smangela @amandaL hahaha! It's just so hefty for a choose your own adventure! 3y

Eh. Ehhhhhhhhhhh. Ehhhhh. That's basically how I feel about this. I was absurdly excited to read this since last year, and I finally got my paws on it last month.........but ehhh. The author was trying way too hard to be funny and amusing and witty. I hate when authors do that. Funny writing is organic, not ~lets see how many ridiculous things I can cram into a paragraph because oho I am so amusing~. WOW, I'm disappointed.

queerbookreader @SaturnDoo This is one of my last library books out!!!!! I have been weak and kept checking things out, but NO MORE. Really I have like three left to get through and after I swear to god I am paying attention to my own books for the rest of the summer. Swear to god. Until at least September 21st. 3y
SaturnDoo @lemonlime799 😂😂😂 I still have books checked out(not any new ones..the same ones I had) but I am reading my own as well as these LBs. This month has been a slow reading month for me...been a little busy. But I have my 👀and thoughts on ya 😂 I am lurking. We can do this. 3y
Johanna414 I've been giving myself this same lecture... I need to focus on my own books and the 30 I brought home from my work library to read this summer. The public library is off limits! ...until the next time Lane and I are out for a walk and I lose will-power, of course 3y

faelinwolf I felt the same! I was so excited about it & then I didn't even try to finish it... 3y
queerbookreader @faelinwolf I tried all of 4 options and was like "welp I'm just about done here", such a disappointment. The most exciting thing about the book is the cover art by Noelle Stevenson. And the book is one of my favorite colors. But that's it!! 3y
Smangela @lemonlime799 my biggest problem is that I want to read all the story lines and I don't think I can/want to, and it's kind of killing me. 3y
queerbookreader @Smangela Because it's not like you can read them out of order! But reading them in order would take the rest of your life! 3y
Smangela @lemonlime799 yes! Hahaha okay I feel validated and am going to return it to my library now haha 3y

I first went through the "spoiler" path, which I enjoyed - I liked the humour and North's style. I then did the "secret character" path, which I also enjoyed. But then I did a couple Romeo paths and a couple Juliet paths and it started falling flat for me. So... not sure. Maybe choosing my own adventure just doesn't work for my linear personality. (But the @EclecticReaders episode was great! And so is this dark basement simulator.)

The robots were weak.

No, but seriously. I think I was expecting Shakespeare fanfiction, with a few stable plots, and a heavy dose of comedy. Instead I got a comedy book loosely based on Shakespeare and with few true plotlines.

This book did get me to chuckle a couple of times, but ultimately, as someone who loves Shakespeare (even if R&J is my (2nd) least favorite play) this just wasn't for me.

Some parts were really funny but I felt like there were too many choices and too little "meat" as most of the time you'd only read a sentence or two before having to choose yet another path. I was trying to read as many endings as I could in a short amount of time for book club & I think that took away some of the fun. If your read little chunks of this as a pallet cleanser between your other reads it would probably be more enjoyable.
