The Corrections | Jonathan Franzen
Winner of the 2001 National Book Award for FictionAfter almost fifty years as a wife and mother, Enid Lambert is ready to have some fun. Unfortunately, her husband, Alfred, is losing his sanity to Parkinson's disease, and their children have long since flown the family nest to the catastrophes of their own lives. The oldest, Gary, a once-stable portfolio manager and family man, is trying to convince his wife and himself, despite clear signs to the contrary, that he is not clinically depressed. The middle child, Chip, has lost his seemingly secure academic job and is failing spectacularly at his new line of work. And Denise, the youngest, has escaped a disastrous marriage only to pour her youth and beauty down the drain of an affair with a married man-or so her mother fears. Desperate for some pleasure to look forward to, Enid has set her heart on an elusive goal: bringing her family together for one last Christmas at home.

This is my favorite book of all time. Mandatory reading if you grew up in the American Midwest, as far as I'm concerned. Read it more than once -- the similarities between children and parents are the emotional backbone of the book and they get more and more pronounced on each reading.

If you are looking for a moral lesson from a novel, maybe The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen isn‘t where you should start.

However, if you want a dismal reflection on how happiness and joy are fleeting experiences, and the more unhappy someone gets, the more they cling to anything that might possibly hopefully give them a sense of positivity in a very negative reality, then Franzen does not disappoint.

I‘ve never read Franzen. (embarrassing, yes 🙈)

I‘ve heard both referred to as the great modern American novel.

Which do you recommend I read first?

#thecorrections or #freedom ???

#helpmechose #whichfranzenfirst #literaryfiction

TheBookStacker I‘ve only read Freedom which I enjoyed. 12mo
zsuzsanna_reads I'm interested in the answer too, I haven't read them either! 12mo
CarolynM I bailed on The Corrections at the page 100 threshold. I just didn't care about the characters and wasn't interested in the story. 12mo

gradcat I read both, loved both...so I guess that makes these books #marmite! I‘m so proud of myself—I learned the marmite reference from Littens!! (edited) 12mo
Silvertongue I just read The Corrections last month but it was pretty painful to get through—nearly all the characters are exquisitely terrible people. Which I guess is the point of the book? Still working on the meaning of the book~ I thought about not finishing but it was a rec from a good friend. 12mo
JacqMac I hated The Corrections so much. I wish I had bailed. Don‘t be embarrassed. 12mo
Blaire I liked both, but I read the corrections ages ago (when it first came out 2001?). I‘d prob read it first. I don‘t mind unlikeable characters. 12mo
Creadnorthey Corrections is exquisite- no matter the difficult characters. I took this family drama with a loving dose of black humor. 12mo

Yet another example of #whenikissedtheteacher In this case the middle son Chip of the Lambert family is a university professor who embarks on an ill advised affair with a student.

I really disliked most of the characters in this book, but I remember them so I guess that‘s something!

It‘s been my reading goal to read one Franzen per year. I read The Corrections in 2017 and golly, it‘s one heck of a novel. Though all characters are neurotic, make dreadful decisions and life choices, Franzen paints a compelling portrait of post 9/11 Americana that harkens to the zeitgeist of the time. Recommend! Recommend! #jonathanfranzen #franzen #thecorrections #americanlit

A #perfectillusion of the happy American family is on full display here. But the level of dysfunction that illusion masks is pretty significant. I'm not usually a family drama fan but I liked this one- very funny throughout, even though some serious problems emerge. I know though that people have some strong feelings about the author and maybe this work in particular too so, reader beware 😐 #augustgrrrl @Cinfhen

This is just a question for everyone. Have you ever read a book you really liked but then find yourself shying off from reading anything else by that author for reasons you can't explain? I loved this book but have read nothing else by him. I loved A.S. Byatt's Possession but have read nothing else of hers. This is a phenomenon I really don't understand. Anyone have any ideas? (Just a picture of the river walk in Tuscaloosa, AL.)

Notafraidofwords Yes, the guy that wrote 2y
Notafraidofwords And I can't explain why since I liked it well enough. 2y
KathyWheeler @Notafraidofwords He's kind of another for me although I've read two of his books, Under the Banner of Heaven and Missoula. Both were excellent, but I haven't read anything else. As much as I liked those two books, you'd think I'd seek out other books by him, but I haven't. 2y
Notafraidofwords @KathyWheeler I also rarely read books consecutively. For example, I've never binge read a series. 2y

The Corrections | Jonathan Franzen

And when the event, the big change in your life, is simply an insight—isn't that a strange thing? That absolutely nothing changes except that you see things differently and you're less fearful and less anxious and generally stronger as a result: isn't it amazing that a completely invisible thing in your head can feel realer than anything you've experienced before? You see things more clearly and you know that you're seeing them more clearly.

I don't believe in book guilt/shame! 3y
oonaghmoon I've never read any of his work, interesting to read everyone's views. Life's too short to read books you don't enjoy! 3y
JonathanDunne @mllemay hello! My problem is that I keep coming back to A Confederacy of Dunces. I've tried these 'higher brow' tragicomedies The Corrections and Infinite Jest but they're not juicy enough. 3y
JonathanDunne @oonaghmoon these days I can't finish a book without losing interest. And I find myself rereading well-worn words (alliteration). Hello to you also 👋 3y
mllemay @JonathanDunne that's fair! Not every book will be for everyone. I think it's not worth the energy to force-read a book that you know will not resonate with you. 3y
