I feel like I read this in middle school, maybe, but forgot about it. Interesting, food-for-thought. What would you do, or not, if you thought you were the last person on earth, and then it turned out that you were not, but the other person was crazy. Kinda like the Twilight Zone where the guy is all alone and wants to read forever but his glasses break. I doubt that at 16, I would have had the presence of mind to plan as Ann does.

She should have shot him. I really liked how Ann Burden was so capable and a survivor, but constantly excusing this guy who tried to rape her, control her, starve her, shoots her, tries to kidnap her and then leaving him to have everything of hers was not something I admired in this story at all. The bit where she stands in front of his gun and he doesn‘t shoot her is also totally unbelievable. Big let down.

#2021Book101
I liked the main character in this book and I enjoyed that it was written in the style of her keeping a journal. The big conflict in the book didn't make enough sense, though. There was no real justification for why the antagonist behaved the way he did. I also couldn't understand why either character was so interested in surviving when they were both 100% positive that absolutely no one else in the world was still alive.

This is quite a page-turner apocalyptic YA tale. The last female on earth must learn the wily ways of the last man. I love that there is no horror or zombies, but it is tense and suspenseful. Just two people trying to survive, and learning to live with each other, or not. 4-1/2 stars.

And for the first time ever, I‘ve finish #litsyatoz before December! #letterZ @BookishMarginalia

Nuclear war has happened and Ann, 16 years old, is the sole survivor. At least that is what she thinks until she sees campfire smoke in the distance. Soon she is not alone in her green valley and she will have to outthink and outmaneuver the man who arrives to survive.
I found this YA book to be suspenseful and enthralling. #LitsyAtoZ #Z #Booked2019 #BooktoMovie

I admit, I picked this up for the letter #Z in my #litsyAtoZ challenge. I had seen the movie not knowing it was also a book. Were they ever different! The story is about a girl left behind after a nuclear war. She is living in an unaffected area, when a stranger appears. At first things are going well and then they take a turn. The girl is 16 and so self sufficient and smart, she‘s a great heroine. And I loved this classic cover.

I don't read much YA anymore , but when i come across post apocalyptic books I always grab them!

This follows Ann who is only survivor after her world was ravaged by a nuclear war, and she has been surviving on her own in a remote valley for a year.. until she realises she may not be only survivor...and there may be worst things than being last person on earth....😨

#funfridayphoto The book I was assigned at school that stuck with me is this nuclear holocaust book. I grew up during the height of the Cold War, the eighties had me convinced that WWIII was imminent, and then I found out that the munitions factory on the edge of my suburb was a target of interest to the USSR. Scary. Ann is 16, the sole survivor of a nuclear strike on her region, until she sees smoke in the distance & finds she's not alone.

OSChamberlain Omg that is insane! And this story sounds cool too. But that sounds like quite a wild ride you had. 8y
Lizpixie @OSChamberlain I was the kid that watched the news every night & read the papers too. It was always full of Reagan & co threatening Brezhnev, Andropov & Gorbachenko, pissing contests talking about missile silos, targets of interest etc. For a kid it was terrifying, I used to try calculate how long we'd have to get out of the blast zone if the sirens went off at the factory. Had nightmares nearly every night. Yeah, I was that kid. 8y
OSChamberlain Holy shit! Sorry you had to experience that! 8y
bookishkai @Lizpixie my fifth grade teacher read this out loud to us (1987-88 school year) and I remember being alternately terrified and fascinated. I've since discussed this experience and book with other people right around my age and we all agree that it was a formative experience. I was also a news junkie as a kid; my first real memory is watching the hostages come home from Iran when I was three. 8y

My fifth grade teacher read this out loud to us. At the time (1987-88) it was beyond scary, the idea of nuclear war. It's still scary, and, though dated, still relevant. And yet, despite the fact that it terrified me I ended up getting my own copy and read it a handful of times as a teenager. Any other 80's kids read this in school?

Witchy_Book_Dragon I read this in high school for English class. It still sticks with me to this day. Very haunting 8y
