The Night Ocean
The Night Ocean | Paul La Farge
From the award-winning author and New Yorker contributor, a riveting novel about secrets and scandals, psychiatry and pulp fiction, inspired by the lives of H.P. Lovecraft and his circle. Marina Willett, M.D., has a problem. Her husband, Charlie, has become obsessed with H.P. Lovecraft, in particular with one episode in the legendary horror writer's life: In the summer of 1934, the "old gent" lived for two months with a gay teenage fan named Robert Barlow, at Barlow's family home in central Florida. What were the two of them up to? Were they friends--or something more? Just when Charlie thinks he's solved the puzzle, a new scandal erupts, and he disappears. The police say it's suicide. Marina is a psychiatrist, and she doesn't believe them. A tour-de-force of storytelling, The Night Ocean follows the lives of some extraordinary people: Lovecraft, the most influential American horror writer of the 20th century, whose stories continue to win new acolytes, even as his racist views provoke new critics; Barlow, a seminal scholar of Mexican culture who killed himself after being blackmailed for his homosexuality (and who collaborated with Lovecraft on the beautiful story "The Night Ocean"); his student, future Beat writer William S. Burroughs; and L.C. Spinks, a kindly Canadian appliance salesman and science-fiction fan -- the only person who knows the origins of The Erotonomicon, purported to be the intimate diary of Lovecraft himself. As a heartbroken Marina follows her missing husband's trail in an attempt to learn the truth, the novel moves across the decades and along the length of the continent, from a remote Ontario town, through New York and Florida to Mexico City. The Night Ocean is about love and deception -- about the way that stories earn our trust, and betray it.

A forgery wrapped in a hoax wrapped in a mystery. La Farge blends fact, fiction, and conjecture into an entrancing tale of the weird. I was most interested in Marina's search for Charlie, which I wish had gotten a bit more attention. The layered story of Lovecraft, Barlow, and Spinks is engaging but drags in a few places.

#ToB chose these 6 books as their 2017 #summerreadingchallenge and I did it--I read them all! And in a timely fashion too. The Night Ocean was my favorite, with Ill Will and Marlena also being excellent. Fever Dream was fascinating, but didn't feel finished. Temporary People is original, but I am not a fan of magical realism. A Separation was not for me. I am hoping some of these land in the next ToB.

ReadingEnvy I still need to get to Temporary People. I bailed on The Night Ocean but read the rest! Do you have a favorite? 7y
ReadingEnvy Doh you already said your favorite. I forgot I also bailed on A Separation. 7y
BarbaraBB I only see this post now. How good you finished them all. I only read Ill Will and The Night Ocean, but loved them both. I guess I'll have to read Marlene as well! When will the winner be announced? 7y
DreesReads @BarbaraBB I think at the end of this month? It was 2 books per month. I read them out of order a bit (I read them in the order they came from the library!) so got out of the loop a bit on the discussions. 7y

#bestreadsof2017sofar I have not had a great reading year. I had a 6-week slump from March into May. I haven't finished 40 books even--usually I am around 50. Trying to find my favorites showed what a drag the year has been--usually I would be struggling to choose 6. This year I have a screenplay, a graphic novel (series), a short story/novella, and just one wonderful big novel. *sigh*

Wow! I wasn't sure I would get through this, but ended up loving it. Yes it's about Lovecraft, but really it's about truth--what is truth, how do we know, how do we find it? I'm still struggling about what in this book is true--it's a novel populated by real people (and per the acknowledgements, descendants of those people provided source material--if that's true!). I would not have found this without #roostersummerreadingchallenge #ToB

Quickest bail in the east! Gorgeous gorgeous cover and I even like how the author is approaching the storytelling in a structural sense, but the obsessive focus on HP Lovecraft as the driving force of the book is just not going to work for me. batsy Thanks for your thoughts. I was interested in the concept and drawn to the cover, but was wondering what it would be like for someone who's not too familiar with Lovecraft's work & life. (But that #tob #rooster thing sounds like fun & a way to get me to read some recently released fiction on my TBR 📚) 7y
Redwritinghood I bailed on this one, too. 7y
Leniverse This looks like my kind of thing though! And when I looked up the title I realised it is taken from a short story written by Lovecraft and Barlow. I thought I had read everything by Lovecraft, but my Complete Fiction doesn't have it! Or any of the other 5 stories they wrote together. I guess it's seen as more of a Barlow story. 🤔 Also... I thought Lovecraft didn't like to collaborate. I must know more now! 7y
Leniverse Aha! It's a Barlow story, yes. Just attributed to Lovecraft now. And the Paul La Farge book definitely goes on my TBR! http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/the-complicated-friendship-of-h-p-lov... 7y

Reading with cats is frequently difficult.

quote
MFD
Night Ocean | Paul La Farge

The words to describe it, I realized, with uneasy surprise, came from Lovecraft: a mephitic blast, or a nameless stench: words that have no particular power to terrify, until you find yourself in the presence of the thing to which they refer. Until you discover that there is a thing to which they refer.

Weirdly I am going to have to rate this book as a pick. H.P. Lovecraft was a prolific writer of weird science stories. However, I think this book is also in its own way a weird science story. I was both intrigued and disgusted. I give it a pick to read because I think that is really how this book was supposed to make you feel. Certainly twisted and weird, but fascinating as well.
