After the Parade
After the Parade: A Novel | Lori Ostlund
From Flannery OConnor and Rona Jaffe Award winner Lori Ostlund, a deeply moving and beautiful debut novel about a man who leaves his longtime partner in New Mexico for a new life in San Francisco, launching him on a tragicomic road trip and into the mysteries of his own Midwestern childhood. Sensitive, big-hearted, and achingly self-conscious, forty-year-old Aaron Englund long ago escaped the confines of his Midwestern hometown, but he still feels like an outcast. After twenty years under the Pygmalion-like direction of his older partner Walter, Aaron at last decides it is time to stop letting life happen to him and to take control of his own fate. But soon after establishing himself in San Franciscowhere he alternates between a shoddy garage apartment and the absurdly ramshackle ESL school where he teachesAaron sees that real freedom will not come until he has made peace with his memories of Morton, Minnesota: a cramped town whose four hundred souls form a constellation of Aarons childhood heartbreaks and hopes. After Aarons father died in the town parade, it was the larger-than-life misfits of his childhoodsardonic, wheel-chair bound dwarf named Clarence, a generous, obese baker named Bernice, a kindly aunt preoccupied with dreams of The Rapturewho helped Aaron find his place in a provincial world hostile to difference. But Aarons sense of rejection runs deep: when Aaron was seventeen, DoloresAarons loving, selfish, and enigmatic mothervanished one night with the town pastor. Aaron hasnt heard from Dolores in more than twenty years, but when a shambolic PI named Bill offers a key to closure, Aaron must confront his own role in his troubled past and rethink his place in a world of unpredictable, life-changing forces. Lori Ostlunds debut novel is an openhearted contemplation of how we grow up and move on, how we can turn our deepest wounds into our greatest strengths. Written with homespun charm and unceasing vitality, After the Parade is a glorious new anthem for the outsider.

Aaron leaves his partner, Walter, of 20 years and decides to move to San Francisco. Which might sound fabulous!!! but is not. His present is interspersed and informed by these somber and subdued memories. Many we can all relate to. Ostlund has such language that she‘s able to illuminate every why and how. Have you ever read prose that has comforted and held you in ways you never knew prose could? That was this book. It was like coming home 👇🏼

Reggie after school to grandma‘s before everyone gets home. She‘s finishing up making tortillas for dinner but let‘s you have one. And it‘s so warm and fluffy and slathered in butter. Total pick!! (edited) 5y

Reggie @Tanisha_A @taraWritesSci Lol, I don‘t feel bad as someone on here put the 60something new releases to look forward list in my feed earlier. It ruined me!! Lol. 5y
Reggie @SamanthaMarie Awww I wish I could make tortillas like grandma but have never gotten it right. And if I do get it right I can‘t get a perfect circle. They come out looking like Florida and California. 5y
RohitSawant Obviously stacking! Awesome review! 5y
Reggie @BarbaraBB @TrishB @CarolynM @Mdargusch @TNbookworm @Cathythoughts @minkyb @rohit-sawant Thanks!!! In San Francisco Aaron teaches ESL to immigrants and some of the best moments come out of their wonder and excitement for language which also sends him into a flashback. Overall, just a real tender book. (edited) 5y
Centique Oh my lord Reggie you can write a review! I don‘t just want to stack this book now, I want to adopt it and take it home to live with me. Also tortillas! I‘ve never had a tortilla that was soft and fluffy - that sounds magnificent 😍😍 5y
SamanthaMarie @Reggie I mean, as long as they taste delish, who cares what they look like, right?! I do use a tortilla press though, because rolling them out really started to annoy me haha. 5y
Reggie @Centique Thanks, Paula.🤗It took me a week to read and I was ok with that because I didn‘t want to let it go. Aww, you would love a fresh tortilla hot off the stove. They‘re the worst thing for you being made of lard and flour but the best thing for the soul!! Lol. 5y
Suet624 Aw, Reggie. What a delicious review. 5y

A deeply felt novel about a sensitive late-30s gay man who leaves his lover of two decades and moves to San Francisco to reinvent himself. But for the wounds of his childhood—which surface with a vengeance—everything would‘ve been fabulous; what happens instead is narrated with a deep, aching beauty that just might restore your faith in fiction. Not to mention humanity. A stunning debut.

#LitsyReadingChallenge Well I got 22/25 and will have to settle for that. In my defense, my daughter was in a terrible car accident in March and I spent a lot of time caring for her (she has since made a full recovery) and we have spent the holidays selling our home and buying another. Good excuses, you must admit!

This book was beautiful and sad and hopeful. We meet Aaron when he's leaving his boyfriend of 20 years. The book is a journey through Aaron's life as he reflects on and revisits his painful childhood and how it has impacted his whole life. It's the story of trauma and healing. It's beautifully written. #queerbooks 📚

Wow. Very sad story and look at life, yet hopeful too. It's the story of Aaron looking back on his life, alternating with his present day life and struggles. When I was about 75% through the book I found myself needing to go back. I restarted about a quarter into the book and just reading and browsing quickly I picked up so much more that I had somehow overlooked. This made me enjoy the ending even more. What a great story!

I've read a lot of books this year -- check my reviews -- and this gorgeous Chinese puzzle, this lovingly sculpted word-garden of a book is easily the best one since Did You Ever Have a Family. A quiet yet revealing character study, glacial in that far more is happening beneath the surface. The author rewards the reader on every page with a trail of morsels that leads from cover to cover. Didn't want it to end!

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I started listening to this one months ago in audio, but put it away because I think it's one that needs to be read. It's a bit quiet and slow so thought it would read better in book format.... 😁 8y
shawnmooney @Lindy it goes without saying that I would love to hear your thoughts on my very tentative opinion. Can you think of a great novel or short story written by a lesbian about gay man or vice versa? I'm drawing a blank… 8y
bookishkai @shawnmooney hmmmm, interesting question. I'm also drawing a blank. I could give you a list of romances, but a great novel? Not really. Thanks for the recommend on this one, though, I'm off to the library to snag a copy on my way to work. 8y

Listened to the audio of this one... I never wanted it to end. After 20 years with his partner, Aaron decides to leave and moves to San Francisco. The book alternates between chapters of Aaron's past and his present efforts to move forward. Interesting and heartbreaking characters. Rewarding read!!
