Monogram Murders: The New Hercule Poirot Mystery
Monogram Murders: The New Hercule Poirot Mystery | Sophie Hannah
"I'm a dead woman, or I shall be soon . . ."Hercule Poirot's quiet supper in a London coffeehouse is interrupted when a young woman confides to him that she is about to be murdered. Though terrified, she begs Poirot not to find and punish her killer. Once she is dead, she insists, justice will have been done. Later that night, Poirot learns that three guests at a London Hotel have been murdered, and a monogrammed cufflink has been placed in each one's mouth. Could there be a connection with the frightened woman? While Poirot struggles to put together the bizarre pieces of the puzzle, the murderer prepares another hotel bedroom for a fourth victim.

I‘m between a pick and a so so here. Yes the writing was excellent and for the most part she captured a lot of what I loved about Poirot. Which must have been a tough and daunting task. But the plot was all over the place with a not so satisfying ending. That said I‘m going to try The closed casket ( her second attempt) only because it‘s set in beautiful Clonakilty and I don‘t think Poirot ever made it to Ireland which could be interesting. 🥸

Cathythoughts Great review. The Clon settjng sounds interesting 😁 3d

Ok, but I found it a bit laboured. I read Anthony Horowitz‘s new Sherlock Holmes books first and don‘t think these stand up so well against them.

Hercule Peroit seems a little bit stiffer than Agatha Christie‘s, if that‘s even possible 😂. But this was still a good read/listen. Some of the red herrings and solutions were quite convoluted, I‘d still like to see more of her young detective. You will enjoy this mystery which pulls you in quickly.

This book was just 'ok' for me. It must be extremely hard to write in 'the voice' of another writer, however, Sophie Hannah has all but perfected it. She has perfected the character and the dialogue so it is quite believable. That said, the 2nd half of the book did go on a bit, there was a lot of repetition. I also found some of the narration a tad confusing. This book is not for me but I'm sure Poirot fans will enjoy it. Thank you.

Finished this reread over lunch. Still a so-so for me. New additions to stories do not always capture the essence of the original. I didn‘t fully grasp the Poirot portrayed in this new version. Perhaps I‘ll try the second in the series some day, but I‘m not rushing to download book two... #24in48 #stayhome24in48

BookishMe I don't like it when revered authors/ characters are borrowed and repackaged for modern times 🙄🙄 5y
LiteraryinPA I felt like the Poirot was pretty spot on, but of course it‘s never going to be the same as the originals. ☺️ 5y
Librarybelle @BookishMe I‘m really skeptical with any Jane Austen adaptation too 5y
Librarybelle @LiteraryinLititz My mystery group felt Poirot was spot on as well. Admittedly, Poirot isn‘t always my favorite Christie character, and in this one, I felt he was extra ostentatious (not right word, exactly, but close). Most others really liked it! 5y
BookishMe Yup! Same here ;o 5y

Poriot is back and as cantankerous as ever in this new mystery set in London. He teams up with a young inspector from Scotland Yard to uncover the truth behind a double suicide and later three murders at a swanky hotel. I liked it!

Read this book as part of a book swap with a friend. I struggled at parts of it. I felt the book was too long. What I love about Agatha Christie is the brevity of her novels. It‘s quick.

I love Agatha Christie, so I was a little nervous about these New Poirot books. But Sophie Hannah really captured him as well as the feeling of reading a Christie book! I‘ve already got the next one on hold.

You know that feeling in a mystery novel when you‘re getting a full confession and all you think “This can‘t be right, there are still 3 1/2 hours left in this book” ?

I had waited to read these Sophie Hannah-written Poirot novels, thinking they‘d be no good, but this one‘s pretty masterful. My only complaint is how long it is 🙄

LiteraryinPA @JenlovesJT47 @Ingerella Sophie Hannah does a GREAT job with these books! Agatha Christie is my favorite author, and I think Sophie has really paid homage to her and to Poirot. She has 2 books out already and another coming out in a few months. The 2 that are out already are well worth a read! 6y

erzascarletbookgasm I know some reviewers think Monogram Murders is a sacrilege..I read it with reservations too, but I do think it's a pretty decent crafted read. I'm thinking if I should read Closed Casket. 7y
Simona @batsy I'm not familiar with her other books, but this is quite solid and comparable with the works of A.Christie, IMO 🤷‍♀️ 7y
Simona @erzascarletbookgasm Sure, for hard core fans, it is! And I understand that, but that doesn't mean that these new stories are bad... I will read Closed Casket eventually ...as well as her next Poirot books (should be published in 2018 and 2020). 7y

I am starting to doubt that Edward Catchpool is the criminal... but he still has an unknown past so i'd be wary 'bout him. But Poirot trusts him so, and who am i to Poirot's judgement? 😙😙😙

"Or, I should say, that was how it appeared to start. I'm not convinced that stories from real life have beginnings and ends, as a matter of fact. Approach them from any vantage point and you'll see that they stretch endlessly back into the past and spread inexorably forward into the future. One is never quite able to say 'That's that, then,' and draw a line."

I haven't read too many murder mysteries and I've never read any Agatha Christie, so this was my first time meeting Hercule Poirot. The scheme seemed convoluted and I'm not entirely satisfied with how it came together. That being said I'm glad the narrator was as exasperated with Poirot's pedantic and boastful nature as I was at times. But Dame Christie obviously has a gift for characters and plot so I'd like to read more of her.

Jolly good fun. Sophie Hannah did an excellent job with this new Poirot novel. Though the Scotland Yard detective from whose perspective the novel reads is a bit of a dolt (but a likeable dolt). I have had this on my shelf for a while. Had to read it ASAP when I realized I had the second one checked out from the library before I had read the first one I actually owned. #booknerdproblems

LiteraryinPA I liked it too! I preferred the second to the first. Hopefully Sophie Hannah will write more; it's exciting to have new Poirot stories. :) 8y
LizzyM @LiteraryinLititz I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. I admit I was a bit skeptical. Going to jump right into the second - 8y

So it's hard to know how I feel about this exactly, especially as a huge Hercule Poirot fan. I liked Catchpool, and I think it was a good choice to have him narrate. Through his eyes, we're seeing Poirot differently, so any differences due to a new writer aren't glaring. Also the case was B A N A N A S

I'm always wary when a new author writes novels featuring an iconic protagonist. But while Sophie Hannah's Poirot is a bit less egotistical than Dame Agatha's and his English has improved, his little grey cells are just as sharp. New narrator Edward Catchpool is perhaps even better suited to the task than Capt. Hastings. With enough plot twists and well-drawn characters to satisfy this avid mystery reader, Poirot's comeback seems in good hands..

I grew up on Agatha Christie novels so I was so excited when Sophie Hannah wrote a new Poirot. I thought it was pretty good. I can't explain what it is missing that makes it not as satisfying as a real Agatha Christie, but being able to spend more time with Poirot is a treat. More please.

msbookleaf Poirot seemed less flamboyant and London lacking in atmosphere to me. But I did enjoy the read, and look forward to more. 👍🏼 8y
