This is my favorite book of the year. It's well-written, well-paced, and even includes a shocking twist. It's essentially the biography of actress Evelyn Hugo, & the fact that I care so much about this fictional woman's life is astounding to me. It shows Jenkins Reid's true talent for storytelling.
I highly recommend this one. I didn't really know what it was about going into it, and that made it all the more wonderful to see Hugo's life unfold.

marleed I‘m so impressed with TJR. She is so young but her research is so thorough that she can write a character at any age or timeline and pull you right in. 2d
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian This was one of my favourites of last year! Her latest one is really great too, especially on audio. 2d
Abailliekaras I saw & nearly bought this at the bookstore today and now I wish I had! 2d

Freespirit Excellent review...I will put it on the list! 2d
Kaylamburson I am just so impressed, too. And Daisy Jones and the Six is next month's book club pick in my group, and I'm 1000 times more excited for it now. Have you read any of her others, @marleed? @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I'm so excited to read it now. It sounded interesting, but there was a lot of hype so I always get nervous it won't live up. 2d
Kaylamburson Aww bummer! Next time you go to the bookstore you should definitely get a copy. It was fantastic on audiobook, too! @Abailliekaras. Thanks so much, @Freespirit. Def add it! 2d

This book was a complete surprise for me. It wasn‘t at all what I was expecting. And I really loved it! Wonderfully complicated characters - sometimes I loved and admired them, sometimes I thought they were just terrible. This was the first book I‘ve read by this author. I will definitely be finding more of her work.

marleed I discovered TJR in 2019, as well! I‘ve now read 4 of her books with 2 more recently delivered from Amazon. I follow her in Instagram. She is so young, yet her ability to research a character is timeless. I think that‘s incredibly impressive. 1w
Ericalambbrown @marleed oh, cool! What do you recommend I read next of hers? 😃 1w
marleed Oh Daisy Jones is a must. I really loved One True Lives. Maybe in another life was good too! On my TBR is After I Do, and Forever Interrupted. 1w

WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO READ THIS? The writing is fantastic, and I loved the story of Evelyn. I highly recommend this book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

marleed I loved this book too. There‘s something kind of special about coming into a book well after it‘s publishing date and still giving it 5 stars. I felt the way about my recently read Bear Town. 3w

#Booked2019 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

I've been forgetting to add my tags for the #Booked2019 challenge! Here's what I've got for fall so far:

#19. Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (Evelyn is addicted to fame! 🎥)

#21. The Testaments (So freaking good!)

Question... Would the whistleblower's account work for #23/#24 possibly? 😬

#22. Wayward Son (Penelope is one of the POV characters.)

BarbaraTheBibliophage Hah. That‘s a good question. I found a book with the account in Scribd, even though I downloaded the account I read from a Congressional site. I‘d say sure ... but I‘d be more inclined to call it political intrigue than public domain. What do you think co-hosts? 3w
Cinfhen I think it works for both categories 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3w

An enjoyable celebrity 'tell all'. Evelyn, nearing end of life, tells her remarkably sad story - her humble beginnings, her ambitions, her loves, her heartbreaks and missed opportunities. There are some good strands - her approach to motherhood is great, both flawed and real. There is also some great writing - some incredibly quotable passages. It's a page turner, but not the deepest read, or the most plausible of story lines.

Twainy Thank you! I was going to buy this but will move it to my waitlist to add to my OverDrive hold list 😁 3w
Mitch @Twainy it was close to a pick! A real page turner but left me wanting it to be better! 3w

To say Evelyn Hugo is a complicated character is a major understatement. But yet, she delivers these one liners that are so poignant and heartfelt that I couldn‘t help but be blown away. Reid writes such an interesting book about such a flawed character; admittedly, the ending shattered me.

While I think Daisy Jones is still my favorite, this one is so good. Captivating. Can‘t wait for the final discussion. #botmbuddyread #Zeke #catsoflitsy

Finished this audiobook today!

While did really enjoy this book, I‘ll be honest that the last 1/3 of the story was not as engaging as the first part of the book. I loved Evelyn‘s voice and her journey through 1950s-70s Hollywood. But honestly, I was not that interested in her relationship w/Celia, which is kind of a bummer since that‘s what Evelyn‘s story ultimately hinges upon. Her friendship w/Harry was much more engaging to me. Spoilers below:

Kimberlone I will say I totally figured out the connection with Monique‘s dad as soon as the car crash happened. It felt so obvious and kind of a letdown once it is finally “revealed” literally at the very end of the book 4w

Evelyn is reminiscent of Rita Hayworth and Elizabeth Taylor. She's larger than life and completely unrepentant of any sins it took to get to the top of Hollywood. A fun read that touches on fame, glamour, and confidence. We all need a little Evelyn in our lives sometimes!

Unique & incredible story of a very complex character, Evelyn Hugo, from the Golden Age of Hollywood. She somewhat reminded me of Liz Taylor as the book showed the many faces of love with lots of surprises and secrets. Love of husbands, wives, family, friends, same sex, romantic love and love of life. I plan to read more books by Taylor Jenkins Reid as I did enjoy her writing. I would recommend this book to those that love reading about Hollywood.

I burned through this one so quickly. Perfect blend of the styles of fiction, memoir, biography. Full of emotion and passion. It's hard to believe Hollywood could be so transactional when it comes to relationships and career. Makes me wonder how similar the current scene is to the time depicted in the book.
