pickThis book encompasses many aspects that affect our lives today: racism, prejudice, drugs, & others.However, the book incorporates them in the plot & doesn‘t revolve around those themes. The book is an quick, easy read focusing on a bank heist from the inside. Main character is thoroughly developed. There are many sexual references/situations, some weren‘t needed as part of the story line. Also, a fairly predictable ending. Still a good quick read.
pickMr. Qiao certainly doesn't waste any time getting to the action in this wiz-bang, page-turner of a heist book. His literary influences are clear (Elmore Leonard, to be sure), and if the dialogue rings a bit pseudo-tough at times, the plot certainly sails along at a rapid-fire clip. The book as a whole could use a good proof-reader for its next edition. But Mr. Qiao definitely is a natural story-teller with great potential and a bright future.

pickOne of the reasons I joined Litsy was to expose myself to books that I wouldn't normally pick up. When Eric offered to send a copy of his book in exchange for an honest review, I jumped at the chance. "Shanghai Bandit" was fast-paced, had fully developed characters who were likeable (even though they shouldn't have been), and had an interesting sub-plot. My only complaint is the crass language. I'm no prude, but it was just a bit too much for me.

pickAfter reading @EricQiao 's 2nd book, I understood the main reason why I have such a hard time putting his books down: his narrators are so real and sound so natural that it feels like a good friend is telling me about this really interesting thing that happened to them, and I can't wait to know all the details. Like The Only Girl in China, Shanghai Bandit is full of clever twists and likeable characters, all of which make for a really fun read! 👌

I can tell this is a much needed three day weekend because I just made my morning cup of coffee without the coffee. Yesterday everyone kept asking me my weekend plans and the honest answer was reading and #introverting. I think the weekend TBR stack I made might be a tad ambitious though. #maybookflowers
This just happened. Buyer made the purchase and asked me if I'm Chinese, I said yeah, then she cancelled immediately. I asked her why? This was her response.
So my day certainly ended better than expected. My endodontist decided that I likely did not need a root canal after all. I got a filling and just need to monitor my pain and sensitivity. I might even be able to avoid the crown. Then I come home to some awesome #bookmail. I am looking forward to reading this!
100 pages in.. things are really getting interesting. Shit is starting to go down.
The goodwill bookstore is about a 10 minute walk down the street for me. But it's pouring rain and my husband has the car to take our daughter for a sleepover at his dad's. So do I risk walking down and getting soaked (and possibly ending up with some wet books on the way back) or do I wait a couple months to the next sale and finish reading Shanghai Bandit while I'm home alone this afternoon.. 🤔
pickThis was a quick read, that was fun to get through. There was a great cast of characters, who each had personality. It had some nice, subtle commentary on racial profiling/stereotyping, that is relevant to our society at present, but was nicely tempered with the abundant humor throughout the book, so it didn‘t feel like it was being forced upon the reader. After reading this sophomore novel, it is clear that Qiao is finding his writing style!
