The tenth most banned book in America this past year is a skillfully and sensitively told story, based on interviews with real survivors, of a 13 year old Nepali girl sold by her stepfather into prostitution in India. This important, inspiring, and very moving book, published in 2006 to critical acclaim, exemplifies the words Lakshmi‘s beloved mother tells her, “Simply to endure…is to triumph,” and celebrates survival, love of learning, and hope.

I finished up this audiobook this morning. It's a powerful, heartbreaking read about a young girl's life in a small village in the mountains in #Nepal. This is one of those books that's going to stay with me for a long time. 💔💚
Solid literary values, not exploitative, at least not at the prose level. Readers will have their own feelings about researched-based fictionalization of human trafficking, but I would say that this was moving and aims to raise awareness. Can't say if I'd put it in the young adult category--then again, as someone who did not grow up with today's YA's, this was a graphic antidote to the candy coated depictions of intimacy I've seen in those ...
Wow. It's not a very long story but it gives a punch in the heart. It's pretty powerful.
If only in reality, victims of sex slavery could all be given the same hopeful ending.
Eli Weisel said, "Let us remember: what hurts the victim most is not the cruelty of the oppressor, but the silence of the bystander."

Such a haunting cover. A book that will always stay in your soul!
Well written, but heartbreaking. Easy to get through in one afternoon, and definitely worth the read.
Currently clocking in at 17.5 hours for #24B4Monday, and just getting started on the tagged audiobook. My weekend is finally getting started, and I‘m thrilled to be off work until Wednesday 🤪🥳
Four books for me this month. Two kids, two adult- all excellent. How did you all do?

⭐️5/5 I loved this YA verse novel. It‘s a heart wrenching story of a young girl sold into sex trafficking. The authors uses the power of white space amazingly in here and pulls readers into the reality for thousands of young girls across the world.

Outside of Nepal, at least half a million children are sold into slavery yearly
I absolutely adored this book, not only did it bring out the issue of child prostitution, but it really made my heart smile, cry and swell all at the same time.
This is the last fiction book that I was given and I wanted to post it on its own. It seems like a book that I should have heard of or seen before, but I haven't. It is also written in verse.
It is endorsed by Amnesty International and tells the story of a child slave in Nepal.
I think it will be a heartbreaking but important book
Hard to read but this is real to nearly 12,000 Nepali girls who are sold by their families each year...
"I've spent so much time here, I must be 14 by now."
"The men pay 30 rupees to be with me."
30 rupees = $0.41 USD
There are currently more people owned by other people than any other time in history.
The 3rd book I finished over the weekend was Sold. One of the 10th grade English classes I‘m in is going to be starting this book soon.
Human traffickers have always been at the tippy top of my shit list, followed by child rapists. Bringing awareness about it has always been a priority of mine so I‘m glad this book is being read in our class.
I‘m not really on a YA kick at the moment but I‘m trying to read the books that the students I monitor are reading in their classes. This lets me anticipate any triggers they may have and prepare accordingly. It also helps me help them with their class work. These are the first two books on deck. #SpecialEdRocks #AllStudents #ItsGreatToBeAHawk
"Each year, nearly 12,000 Nepali girls are sold by their families, intentionally or unwittingly, into a life of sexual slavery in the brothels of India. Worldwide, the US State Dept estimates that nearly half a million children are trafficked into the sex trade annually."
#LitsyAtoZ #S✔️This is definitely not the most uplifting book to begin the new year, but it‘s important. Nearly 500,000 children are sold into sex slavery worldwide every year.
This book was painful to read. I felt anxious and horrified as I followed the story of this young girl. I appreciate that this topic is being researched and written about. In regards to the actual writing of the book, I did not mind style. I read the book in two settings. "Each year, nearly 12,000 Nepali girls are sold by their families, intentionally or unwittingly, into a life of sexual slavery in the brothels of India."
I listened to this one, and it was really sad. There's too much of this in the world.
This is a must read. If you're not angry, you don't know enough.
Books that fit in this pocket are essential
Finished this book in a few hours, but I think it will stay with me for the rest of my life. Lakshmi, a girl from Nepal, believes she is going to the city to start working as a maid, only to find out that she has actually been sold into prostitution. She narrates her journey in short verse that is both beautiful and heartbreaking.
Slow morning at the bookstore means it's time to knock out my second book club book for the month.
This book was absolutely devastating. It's told in short chapters that are almost poetry. Not only did it help me understand the enormous tragedy of what these young girls experience, but also helped me understand why it can be so hard to rescue them, given the misinformation they are led to believe.
Guys, if you haven't read this book pick it up and check it out. It's a beautiful, heartbreaking, book written in prose (correct me if this isn't the word I'm looking for - it feels wrong) about a 13 year old girl who is sold into the sex slave trade in India. #yellowcovers #riotgrams
I saw the movie based on this book today. It was about child trafficking and the prostitution business in India. Obviously a very heavy topic but the movie was taken well. I'm curious to know if anyone has read the book this movie is based on. Even if you haven't, I'd encourage you to watch this award winning movie.
To honor the many women & children who are affected by human and sex trafficking across the world, here's a list of fiction books, from middle grade to adult, that deal with this difficult subject. It's important we share their stories and fight this form of modern day slavery. I'll also post some nonfiction recommendations. ✊🏼
I read Sold a couple years ago and it's an incredible YA book on trafficking in Nepal.

Anuradha Koirala is a Nepalese activist who founded Maiti Nepal, a nonprofit that helps victims of sex trafficking. She runs a rehabilitation home in Kathmandu & has helped rescue & rehabilitate more than 12,000 women & girls since 1993. She helps them go back to their families or live on their own, helps patrol the Indian/Nepal border, & brings back victims from Indian brothels. 🙌🏽

This a powerful novel about a young girl, Lakshmi, in the mountains of Nepal who's family sells her into prostitution because of their debt. She is taken over borders, beaten, drugged, sexually abused and kept a prisoner in the brothel. This is a story of lost innocence, strength & sheer will. Justine Eyre did a phenomenal job as a narrator & I was surprised to find out that it was she who did the narration & not someone from Nepal or India.

Although this isn't an easy book to read, I thought it was excellent.
Staring this one (audiobook). Not sure if my heart is ready. #DiverseAThon
