Lion: A Long Way Home
Lion: A Long Way Home | Saroo Brierley
When Saroo Brierley used Google Earth to find his long-lost home town half a world away, he made global headlines. Saroo had become lost on a train in India at the age of five. Not knowing the name of his family or where he was from, he survived for weeks on the streets of Kolkata, before being taken into an orphanage and adopted by a couple in Australia. Despite being happy in his new family, Saroo always wondered about his origins. He spent hours staring at the map of India on his bedroom wall. When he was a young man the advent of Google Earth led him to pour over satellite images of the country for landmarks he recognised. And one day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for. Then he set off on a journey to find his mother. A Long Way Home is a moving and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit - hope.

This book is amazing. The journey of a five year old who is lost on the streets of Calcutta (Kolkata) to being adopted is very intriguing. Once you start to read this book you are so engrossed that you don't wish to put it down. The story of determination and dedication to find his roots is very inspiring. No matter what the circumstances are always be assured that something good will happen is the message I got from this book. Movie was great

Mcoun I liked the movie. I will have to check out the book. 2y

Lion - the movie - was released 4 months before I found my birth mother, so Saroo‘s story really got to me when I watched it the first time. Although the writing was simplistic, I‘m glad I finally got around to reading his book!

Progress with science and technology have led to profound breakthroughs for many adoptees. I found my birth family through Ancestry DNA testing. All I had to go on was my adoption certificate, the agency name & ⬇️⬇️

4thhouseontheleft Handwritten notes from the social worker (most of which turned out to be inaccurate). And a first name - Diane - which I found out after petitioning the court for non-identifying info in 2000. Now PA has allowed the release of original birth certificates, which also helps the process of search and reunion! Read for #pop18 2y
LeahBergen Wow! 2y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook I didn't know there was a movie - my mom was crazy about this book! Wow that's so amazing @4thhouseontheleft ! 2y

Yep!! I can definitely relate to this.

Prior to finding my birth family, I always felt that my identity was incomplete. And yes, it was a feeling of something missing. This is why I don‘t like the narrative of adoption being a clean slate for a child, because it never is, and those feelings of loss, no matter how they manifest, should not be viewed as insignificant or inappropriate.

AmyG I‘m adopted. While I never set out find my birth parents, I always felt something missing in that I don‘t know where my family is from. True quote you posted. (edited) 2y
CouronneDhiver Insightful 2y
4thhouseontheleft @AmyG I didn‘t really know where mine was from, either, other than a vague mention of MD for my birth mother, which we had no idea if it was accurate. That‘s why I was shocked to find out my birth mother was from a town 20 minutes from where I grew up in PA! 2y
AmyG Wow that‘s close. 2y
Wife A close friend of mine has always had an “unwanted” feeling because she was adopted. 😕 2y

This is a perfect example of why I don‘t like it when publishers change titles and book covers to match a movie release! My cover shows Dev Patel, and while he is definitely lovely to look at 😉, I still prefer original covers.

On another note, I never like when publishers change the title of a book to match a movie title. 😕

I haven‘t seen the film, but I must have seen the trailer for it,because there were no surprises in the book. It‘s ghost written, but once you know the story the book doesn‘t actually add much.

Saroo‘s personal journey of getting lost in Calcutta as a five year old, surviving on the streets, and getting adopted by an Australian couple. 25 years later, he‘s knocking on the door of his childhood home.

I‘m looking forward to seeing the film.

I am thrilled that this beautiful story was adapted for film because otherwise, I may never have picked it up. I read this over the course of several weeks b/c the early chapters were so difficult to contemplate. How this remarkably industrious 5 year old managed to survive alone on the streets for weeks boggles the mind. Profoundly moving. 5 ⭐️

JamieArc Each year my town has a One Book, One Community event where everyone, including the incoming university freshman class, read the same book. I was excited that this was this year's book, as they also bring in the author for a talk, so I got to meet him and get my book signed. A high moment this year 😍 2y

This novel is simply astounding. It reads like a piece of fiction, only because it's difficult to imagine these events happening, or you don't want to imagine them occurring. Saroo is lucky, profoundly lucky, and he portrays a series of difficult events in the most mature and well-adjusted manner. Truly a remarkable story, of which the movie only portrayed the top layer.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

StellaDz @Jess7 while the movie is very much like the book, it is basically just the surface of the story. The book goes so much deeper and so many other occurrences are discussed that aren't touched in the movie! Definitely a good read! 2y
Jess7 Good to know! Thanks! I will make sure to read it eventually! 2y

Forgive me Littens for I have sinned. I watched the movie before reading the book. I cried through the entire last half of the movie so I think I have suffered enough. Pretty sure I can't read the book now and do that to myself again. But, it is a great movie.

I watched #Lion for the third time last night. I started the book at the beginning of the weekend and I'm about halfway through it now. I LOVE the movie (bawl every time); so far I like the book better than the movie because there's added details that the movie leaves out and doesn't have all the movie "fluff."

Spent a brief weekend at the cottage of @jpease89 , where we read, napped, vintage shopped and discussed this book over homemade beignets 😍 she's WAY too good to me.
