The Cloud of Unknowning
The Cloud of Unknowning | Anonymous

At a time when the whole of Western Europe was in the grip of the Black Death and the Hundred Years War, there was a great flourishing of spiritual works. The Cloud of Unknowing is part of this tradition, and although the exact identity of its author remains obscure, he was probably an English country patron of the late fourteenth century. The main theme of this book is that God cannot be reached by human intellect but only by a love that can pierce the 'cloud of unknowing.'

Hey guys, I don‘t have Facebook or social media but we are vacationing in Myrtle beach right now and there‘s a hurricane going to hit causing surging and high flood waters. Is anyone here at all too and what are you doing if you are?! We don‘t live here and are vacationing but are a nervous wreck right now. Do we leave, stay?? Anyone else in this boat? Thanks in advance guys and stay safe if you‘re in the path of Debby

BarkingMadRead How long are you there and how close to the beach are you staying? 3mo
TheQuietQuill The house where we‘re staying is 4 blocks from the beach in north Myrtle. We‘re here until Saturday and just got here two days ago. @BarkingMadRead 3mo
BarkingMadRead Is the house lifted? Like on stilts or with just the garage below? Does that make sense? If there is no living space on the ground floor, you should be fine. You can park your car somewhere on higher ground to be safe. I would suggest contacting the owners and asking what they think. They will know historically whether the house floods. If you don‘t have any board games or card games, go get some now, plus some candles in case the power goes out 3mo

BarkingMadRead Also freeze some water in ziploc bags or get some bagged ice for your perishables. I lived in NJ during Sandy, I‘m a pro 😂 (edited) 3mo
TheQuietQuill Unfortunately, it‘s a patio home so the ground floor is our living space. I‘d feel better if it was on stilts or anything like that. The owners said no refund at all if we leave. We‘re kind of up a creek I think @BarkingMadRead 3mo
BarkingMadRead Ughhhhhh I‘m so sorry. Can you get a hotel room for the day it‘s supposed to hit? You can always go back afterward. 3mo
TheQuietQuill That‘s what we were thinking, but the storm is so massive it covers the whole state pretty much and it‘s a stalling storm meaning that it‘s going to dump rain for days until Friday possibly Saturday. I can‘t believe how bad it is and they‘re saying it‘ll be catastrophic @BarkingMadRead 3mo
BarkingMadRead I‘m so sorry! We are trapped in Orlando right now with no flights out, we live in the Charlotte area. I totally get it!! I‘m so sorry this happened to you, it really sucks! 3mo
wordslinger42 @TheQuietQuill As someone who has been through several hurricanes in NC, I would recommend leaving, especially given what they‘re saying. Praying you all stay safe whatever you decide! 3mo
TheQuietQuill Same for you! Let me know if you guys are okay, and I‘ll do the same here with whatever we plan on doing. But it looks like the national guard is coming from what I just read, so I think we might bight the bullet and leave but they‘re saying it‘s not that easy with the amount of rainfall we‘re to get. Stay safe! ❤️❤️❤️ @BarkingMadRead 3mo
BarkingMadRead If the Guard is coming, it might be best to leave. I‘m so so sorry! At least we got our vacay before we got trapped! I keep looking for silver linings, but it‘s getting hard! This was a girls trip and I miss my hubby. It‘s been 10 days, already, and I‘m feeling weepy. 3mo
DaveGreen7777 Sorry you‘re going through this! Hope you make it through the hurricane okay! 🙏 3mo
TheQuietQuill I think we‘re leaving tonight, going to drive as much as possible to where we‘ll be safe and get a hotel. Thanks guys ❤️❤️❤️ @wordslinger42 @DaveGreen7777 3mo
TheQuietQuill I‘m so sorry to hear that @BarkingMadRead please stay safe and I‘m thinking of you guys and all who are in Debbys path ❤️ 3mo
BarkingMadRead I‘m polling some friends who live there to see what they would do. 3mo
BarkingMadRead For what it‘s worth, both of my local friends say you‘ll be fine. North Myrtle doesn‘t flood historically, and the storm is supposed to be severely downgraded by the time it gets there 3mo
AnnCrystal May the path out be safe and clear 🙏🫂💝. Prayers for all during this hurricane 🙏🫂💝. 3mo
dabbe Keeping all of you in harm's way in my thoughts. Stay safe! 💚💙💚 3mo
TheQuietQuill Thanks so much for asking your friends for me! The weather channel is saying these will be historic floods here in Myrtle beach that‘s why I was so taken off course. I just don‘t know what to think, the song “should I stay or should I go,” comes to my mind 🤣 @BarkingMadRead 3mo
BarkingMadRead It was just downgraded to a tropical storm, so I bet the models will all change! 3mo
marleed I was in Florida for work (with a hotel ocean view) when the convention was canceled because of Katrina. I was so mad - I wanted to watch the ocean but had to leave. A few days later New Orleans was ravaged as Katrina changed course. I was embarrassed for my verbal complaints. If emergency alerts tell you to go. Go. Let the first responders take care of residents and their pets rather than frightened tourists wanting to return home. 3mo
TheQuietQuill I‘m not complaining or anything, I just really didn‘t know what to do since we‘ve never been in this situation before. We vacation down here all the time, and this was just a first for us. If my comments sounded like complaints, I truly apologize as that‘s not what I intended. @marleed 3mo
marleed @TheQuietQuill Oh no no no, I didn‘t take that way at all. I just recounted my single hurricane experience (traveling not at my own expense) and seriously complaining when it was cut short. Then when I saw the devestatation even in a different state- I realized that as a tourist I would forward looking follow the instructions of disaster officials. But honestly just my one experience!! 3mo
TheQuietQuill I agree with you 100%, at this point we‘d rather be safe than sorry I think. It‘s been a crazy 24 hours with this storm and intensity and just not knowing. @marleed 3mo
marleed @TheQuietQuill Also note, I grew up in Montana and adult in Kansas City, who am I too suggest hurricane response 🤣🤣🌀🌀 3mo
TheQuietQuill I totally appreciate it though because we have just been so overwhelmed with this but I feel for those who live here and have homes. I live in PA so blizzards and snow storms we can handle, but this is a whole new territory @marleed 3mo
marleed 💙💙 3mo
BarkingMadRead Checking in to see how you‘re all doing! Our flight out of Orlando is still on time for tomorrow morning 🤞🏻🤞🏻 3mo
TheQuietQuill So we ended up biting the bullet and we left around 5:00. Where we were at, the ocean was going to come in and cause 3-4 feet storm surges and on top of that, they‘re looking at 20 inches of rain. Luckily, we have friends in Gatlinburg Tennessee who are letting us stay with them. I‘m so glad you‘re flight is good to go! This has turned out well for the both of us it seems, I hope everyone in Debby‘s path stays safe though ❤️ @BarkingMadRead 3mo
BarkingMadRead Have fun, I love Gatlinburg! 3mo

1. Tie between Jamaica Inn, very atmospheric Gothic romance/adventure/suspense by Grande Dame Daphne du Maurier

Great fictional read about space travel and Earth in the near future. A spaceship sets off for the Alpha Centauri galaxy on a 10-year mission, but doesn't return for 40 years. What happens to the crew when they make such a surprising return?

A little slow at times, but a great read and good characterization. I recommend this book and look forward to reading Two Roads to Paradise, the second book in the series.

And that‘s a NOPE for me. Dekker was one of my favorites growing up, but this did not deliver. Bad world set up, clearly self-published (needs editing) and just blah. Couldn‘t get more than 25 pages in.

BookishTrish Are you guys up for becoming a fivesome? I think @andrea4 is interested in joining us and I‘d love it if she could join in. I‘ll read pretty much anything anytime. I‘m super interested in Elizabeth Gilbert, but am really open to whatever out pick. 5y

StayCurious @BookishTrish of course! I‘m surprised there‘s only four spots for Canadians. 5y
FantasyChick I'm open to pretty much anything so whatever you decide will be great! The EG book sounds good and the Cleveland kidnappings book is one of the few I haven't read yet. I'll try just about anything! @BookishTrish I wouldn't say no to Andrea 😊 5y
StayCurious @FantasyChick I think the Elizabeth Gilbert book sounds good. I just found out that the kidnapping book is kind of a follow up book to her first one, so I don't want to start with the second one. 5y
Andrea4 @BookishTrish thanks again 😄 5y
StayCurious @Andrea4 happy to have you😊 are you ok with City of Girls? 5y

I haven‘t been able to share what I‘m reading because I‘m judging in the Romance Writers of America RITA awards and I have to keep mum about which books I judge. The 2018 RITA finalists will be announced in March, but if you are looking for #romantsy recommendations, you‘ll find a list of last year‘s finalists and winners at RWA.org

ElenaBaer Wow lucky you !!! In all seriousness, how do you get that job?? 7y
SaraPortman It‘s a great job to have, right?!? I‘m an author and member of Romance Writers of America. The RITA awards are peer-judged. 7y
ElenaBaer Ok. So I need to write a book. Get it published. Join RWA. Ok I‘m on it. 😂 Still envious. Can‘t wait to see the list and see your reviews when you are allowed to talk about what you have read. 7y
CocoReads @ElenaBaer right? That‘s definitely the job to have! I‘ve got step one down—need the rest. 😂😂 7y
SaraPortman Less than a week until this year‘s RITA finalists are announced! It‘s a big day in Romancelandia! 7y

I read this book after running across references to it in two books, one of fiction and one on yoga. There were some parallels with yogic meditation with Iśvara being Jesus Christ. It was nice to read about the contemplative side of Christianity.
