Friendship, loyalty, and love lie at the heart of Meg Waite Claytons beautifully written, poignant, and sweeping novel of five women who, over the course of four decades, come to redefine what it means to be family. For thirty-five years, Frankie, Linda, Kath, Brett, and Ally have met every Wednesday at the park near their homes in Palo Alto, California. Defined when they first meet by what their husbands do, the young homemakers and mothers are far removed from the Summer of Love that has enveloped most of the Bay Area in 1967. These Wednesday Sisters seem to have little in common: Frankie is a timid transplant from Chicago, brutally blunt Linda is a remarkable athlete, Kath is a Kentucky debutante, quiet Ally has a secret, and quirky, ultra-intelligent Brett wears little white gloves with her miniskirts. But they are bonded by a shared love of both literatureFitzgerald, Eliot, Austen, du Maurier, Plath, and Dickensand the Miss America Pageant, which they watch together every year. As the years roll on and their children grow, the quintet forms a writers circle to express their hopes and dreams through poems, stories, and, eventually, books. Along the way, they experience history in the making: Vietnam, the race for the moon, and a womens movement that challenges everything they have ever thought about themselves, while at the same time supporting one another through changes in their personal lives brought on by infidelity, longing, illness, failure, and success. Humorous and moving, The Wednesday Sisters is a literary feast for book lovers that earns a place among those popular works that honor the joyful, mysterious, unbreakable bonds between friends. From the Hardcover edition.

The writing wasn't great, but it's a story of friends as chosen family, which I always love. But what I really liked about this book was its time frame - 1967-1975. I can't believe things I always took for granted as par for the course weren't yet *in my own lifetime*. Like one characters sister was going to medical school (a shock in itself) to be a surgeon {gasp}; and the first coed students registering at Vassar, Princeton, and Yale. By the ⬇️

TheBookgeekFrau time I entered HS in 1983 these things were just the given. None of my classmates ever heard 'you can't because you're a girl' And yet it blows my mind that those opportunities were still relatively new when they felt like they always existed. Even though I *knew* they didn't. I don't know it just struck me how many of those changes occurred in my own lifetime. (edited) 10mo
Texreader @TheBookgeekFrau We are about the same age it appears. I‘ve had similar shocks. When I went to law school and I realized the female professors and judges had all broken a huge barrier much to my own benefit. 10mo
TheBookgeekFrau @Texreader I have never been more thankful to all those women than I was reading this book. It's funny how time works and how age really gives perspective. 10mo

"The Wednesday sisters look like the kind of women who might meet at those fancy coffee shops on University--we do *look* that way--but we're not one bit fancy, and we're not sisters, either."

This is why I love my postal book clubs... so many hidden gems (like this one) come my way that I never would have read otherwise.

Well-written historical fiction about female friendships set in 1960s-1970s California, with great characters dealing with a lot of important issues. I loved this book, and didn‘t even mind the tears it successfully jerked from me more than once. 😅

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

HOTPock3tt Ok this has peaked my interest but is definitely NOT my usual thing 😅 maybe I‘ll try it out and see how far I get 😅 #Stacked 4y

1. I would say my sister. We didn‘t get along as kids but as adults, she‘s my best friend. 2. Or for the first time? Anything involving jumping out of an airplane or bungee jumping. Caving is also a hard pass. 3. Assuming I had musical talent and not just enthusiasm—maybe one of my favorite indie groups like ALY or Elisium. 4. I scooped ice cream at a place called Oink‘s. #wondrouswednesday @Eggs

I really wanted to like this book, but something about the execution just did not draw me in. The main character was, confusingly, the least developed. I could tell you more about her 4 friends than her. My other main issue was the way the historical setting was achieved. Here it felt very “told & not shown.” Even with all that, though, I did find myself emotionally connected to some of the women & did enjoy reading the second half of the book.

It‘s #WritingpromptWednesday on the #writersofsouthbend instagram feed. Today‘s was to write a scene/story using these 2 pics. Not sure where I‘m going with this one but it‘s what immediately came to mind. 😄📝#amwriting

dylanisreading Out of curiosity, is your writing group all romance writers? 6y
CocoReads @Bianca No, I think I‘m the only one. Mostly we just talk about writing, at our monthly meetings which are mostly workshops, we do some prompts. Mine almost always turn out to be romance or at least head that way. But I like suspense and thrillers too so occasionally I think along those lines too (edited) 6y
CoverToCoverGirl That‘s a great opening line! 😊 More please! (edited) 6y

MinDea What is progressive rummy?!?! 6y
CocoReads @MinDea it‘s a lot like rummy except each hand is different. Like the 1st hand you need 2 sets of 3 to go down and the 2nd is a run of 4, etc. There‘s 5 hands and we play penny a card. It was my grandmas favorite game so we played a lot while she was still living and so we keep playing now. 6y
