Neil Gaiman is my favorite hoodie. Baggy, unfashionable (I see the looks I get when I say that my Top 3 authors are Dickens, Gaiman, and whoever I‘m currently reading), and immensely comfortable as well as comforting. Thankful, I‘m not sure that I‘ll ever run out of material.
A random mishmash of texts on reading, writing, art, and creative process. Some interviews, some speeches, some intros to books—not exactly an insider‘s peak, but a compilation and an overview, which also tells you things. After all, the whole is more than a sum of its parts.
🎧 Neil narrates his own stuff—as per usual—which I approve of. He has an engaging voice, and I prefer to listen to his books whenever I have the choice.

This was such a pleasure to read. I chose the audiobook route as Gaiman narrates. To me, there‘s nothing better than listening to Neil Gaiman tell his own stories. The book begins with a helpful introduction to the structure of these non-fiction works, why and how he put this book together, and the ways the reader may enjoy the book.

Apparently, Neil Gaiman makes a really comfy pillow! 😸 #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #chaplin
I‘ve been reading this book off and on for a year and 28 days. I started this book on 15 October 2019 in preparation for NaNoWriMo 2019, and just finished a little bit ago on 11 November 2020 in the middle of NaNoWriMo 2020. I guess this is a case of better late than never.

I never drew the parallel between Neverwhere and Doctor Who, but it makes SO much sense.

I got a request for cranberry macaroon loaf, so I took some time out for #audiobaking.
I finished THE VIEW FROM THE CHEAP SEATS while I did the dishes, and it‘s definitely a standout for the month. I had an amazing time listening to Gaiman consider science fiction, comics, music, films, and the people who bring all these things into the world. Highly recommended, though some prior knowledge of his topics does help.
I took a 9-mile #audiowalk along the new Rapid Transit path while I listened to the tagged book. It‘s so good, y‘all! I don‘t agree with Gaiman all the time, but that‘s one of the joys of these collections. You get to nod in recognition, and you get to argue.
It helps he and I are interested in lots of the same things. I can see how this‘d be a frustrating book for people who aren‘t into (or don‘t know much about) certain topics.
I love Neil Gaiman's fiction, but this book is a compilation of essays and talks he's given about different subjects. All put together like that, I thought it made for a slightly boring book. The best parts were at the end where he talked about relationships with friends. I was disappointed he didn't share more personal information. I might not have stuck with it but for the fact that I like his reading voice and I had the audio.
Wow, he really committed to that. It‘s awkward to read, but kind of funny (or quarantine has made me slap happy).

This is an eerie thought, especially right now. That would certainly force social distancing, though.

One word. Rhymes with custard, almost.

Anyone else think “Somewhere in America. Three Months Late” would make a good title? Maybe for Gaiman‘s official biography, or autobiography. 🤣😂🤣 Bet it would be more than three months late, if it was his autobiography.
Can‘t help it. I love Gaiman.

Somehow, Gaiman always gets you to chuckle.

This is such a strange mental image. He‘s got all these awards out in a shed. He doesn‘t really care. He just keeps writing and keeps doing his thing, and whatever people think of it, he‘s just going to keep going.
I‘ve never read King, but seeing him through the eyes of Neil Gaiman, I think it‘s time.
#NeilGaiman #TheViewFromTheCheapSeats
THIS!!! Oh my god I know this feeling. I know this feeling so bad, but I have nowhere near as much stuff or money as Stephen King. It‘s nice to know I‘m not the only one who feels this, and that it might actually go away one day.
#NeilGaiman #TheViewFromTheCheapSeats
King said if everyone could keep the secret, no one would know he was dead for about a year if he‘d died when this interview was done.

I can‘t believe I‘m bailing on Neil Gaiman, but this is going back to the library unfinished. I LOVED the first section (“Some Things I Believe”). After that, my mileage varied. This is partly format. I love Gaiman‘s narration, but I wanted to skim the pieces I wasn‘t as interested in—not easy on audio. It‘s also partly my reading mood. I bogged down in the middle & never really restarted, even with a print copy. I‘ll likely return to it later.
I feel like this is a good quote to live by in 2020.
I enjoyed this one. Some of these intros & pieces I had read/heard before, but a lot I hadn't. Mostly it beefed up my TBR even more, but a few times it made me tear up. Sometimes, the big feelings I get from Gaiman & his words make me question my sanity. I just like what he says & how he says it. For some reason, something in me rings like a bell struck when I consume his work. This was an intimate book that rang a lot.

This is SO true!!! It‘s a wonder I ever signed up for extra schooling. I think I rather enjoyed graduate school (and the second half of college) far more than any other portion of my education.

Which is true, but also odd seeing that all the oppressors (in this situation) were, by definition, at one time the oppressed, really sad (if not downright stupid!).

He‘s really honest in this title for a speech turned article from 1998/1999. Still, it‘s totally worth the read. I adore his writing, even when it‘s a speech. He just always seems to be telling you a story, one way or the other.

Gaiman on Halloween and Ghost Stories
This was a great little article he wrote for NYT for Halloween 2006. Its perfect for this time of year. I wasn‘t aware of the complete difference in Halloween traditions between the states and England.

Sitting on my TBR since late 2016, I finally got to this!
I love that Neil read this as I was able to hear through his voice, the laughter and warmth during his funny moments, the wistfulness and sadness in others, a bit of anger in others as he reads through the various words and it feels as though in doing so, he hits upon different moments and thoughts and even reminisces a little himself.
If I were to divide this book into 3 parts, I would say I loved the first third and the last third and slogged through the middle.
I love how Gaiman describes the importance of art and words and books and storytelling. I also thoroughly enjoyed the parts about his wife, Amanda Palmer.
But all of the speeches and introductions about people I know nothing about got long. However - I did Google a couple of then which would make Gaiman happy I think
This was me as a kid, 100%. I read A Clockwork Orange and One Flew Over the Cuckoo‘s Nest when I was in elementary school because I found them in a box in the basement, along with a weird horror book about dancers being murdered.
While I didn‘t love everything in this book, it was worth it just for the inclusion of his lecture on the power of libraries & imagination. Particularly appropriate now, when school districts & counties are voting to remove libraries from school. I just found out the district I live in was one (ONE!) vote away from removing libraries, not from high schools, not from middle schools, but elementary schools! It‘s a nightmare, only we are living it.
