We Are the Ants (Reprint)
We Are the Ants (Reprint) | Shaun David Hutchinson
From the "author to watch" (Kirkus Reviews) of The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley comes an "equal parts sarcastic and profound" (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) novel about a teenage boy who must decide whether or not the world is worth saving. Henry Denton has spent years being periodically abducted by aliens. Then the aliens give him an ultimatum: The world will end in 144 days, and all Henry has to do to stop it is push a big red button. Only he isn't sure he wants to. After all, life hasn't been great for Henry. His mom is a struggling waitress held together by a thin layer of cigarette smoke. His brother is a jobless dropout who just knocked someone up. His grandmother is slowly losing herself to Alzheimer's. And Henry is still dealing with the grief of his boyfriend's suicide last year. Wiping the slate clean sounds like a pretty good choice to him. But Henry is a scientist first, and facing the question thoroughly and logically, he begins to look for pros and cons: in the bully who is his perpetual one-night stand, in the best friend who betrayed him, in the brilliant and mysterious boy who walked into the wrong class. Weighing the pain and the joy that surrounds him, Henry is left with the ultimate choice: push the button and save the planet and everyone on it...or let the world--and his pain--be destroyed forever.

Complicated feelings abound. Not great, not poor. Interesting take on mental health and asking for help. If the world is so terrible, why stick around? Henry has the worst life, and yeah it gets tiring, yet someone is always around that encourages him to try and see the bright side. Liked people not telling him to get over BF‘s suicide. Everyone is struggling. He thinks it‘s all his fault because why wouldn‘t it be?

This was a wildly popular book several years back and I understand how a teenager may love it because of the MC. For someone in my age classification (old), it‘s a so-so. Henry is a sweetheart, but the misery he endures actually gets old past the midpoint of the book. I loved the science, and the science fiction, but he was bullied mercilessly by classmates (and worse). His brother was abusive too but that was somehow “normalized”. TW suicide, rape

It‘s the perfect reading, journaling day in the rainy Northeast. The vinyl stickers on my Hobonichi are from Bolderbon on Etsy. You couldn‘t ask for a kinder, more dependable vendor. Shout out to Bonnie! Oh, and the book is good…I‘m halfway through.

JanuarieTimewalker13 *I should say the book is ok…more suited to a high schooler…it‘s YA and I‘m kind of losing some patience with it bc it‘s repetitive. 2y

This was actually a really great book. I love Henry and Diego. I love that this novel tackled mental health, and no one was portrayed negatively for seeking help and even spending time getting in patient treatment. I loved the story and how none of the characters were written off as young and being stupid or dramatic. I‘m still trying to figure out the alien on abduction thing.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Henry straight up went missing for multiple days on more than one occasion. Either he was having full on, wondering, mental breaks (totally possible I suppose - but then what was electrocuting him and then giving him euphoria?!) or he was actually getting abducted by aliens. I seriously need answers here. 2y

⭐️5/5
If aliens gave you a chance to save the world that took away your significant other, would you? This YA novel touches on issues such as mental health, Alzheimer‘s, sexuality, bullying, and loss in a creative way. The sci-fi element is normally a turn off for me, but I LOVE it in this book.

Two miles and one chapter this morning. Also, I never posted my goals! Fitness: Walk three times a week, yoga every day, and reduce alcohol consumption. Reading: read/listen to ten books. I did modify my fitness goals—Originally I set a weight loss goal but behavior is more controllable than weight. The goals I chose are something I‘ve been working on for awhile but maybe the #bookfitnesschallenge will motivate me to actually achieve them!

wanderinglynn Weight loss will be a result, so you‘re right that focusing on behaviors is more important. 👍🏻 Great goals! 🙌🏻 6y

Oh, this book totally wrenched my heart. Part ode to science, part philosophy, and all entirely full of vivid, beautiful narration, this story makes you think in so many different ways about so many different things — about family, about death, about love. A fantastic exploration of what it mean to find something to live for. ★★★★☆.

Well I absolutely devoured this book. Heartbreaking and lovely. Henry has been abducted by aliens for years, but when they give him the option of pressing a button to save the world from some unknown destruction, he isn't sure he wants to. Dark and heart wrenching at times, but ultimately hopeful. This is a story about learning to keep going and find the good in life, even when it seems like there's only bad left. 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When I picked up this book, I expected the whole alien/sci-fi element to play a much bigger role. I was happy that the book actually turned out to be a down-to-earth examination of what it means to be alive in a universe where all of our actions are inevitably meaningless and the value of living after tragedy. I was also pleasantly surprised by the mature portrayal of the characters‘ various mental health issues, which is always nice to see.

Both a deeply touching story of loss, grief, and misery, and an existential journey of self-discovery. Henry starts and ends the book saying the same words: "When we're gone, the world will forget we ever existed. It doesn't matter." What changes over the course of 6 months is what he *means* by those words. In the end, "we may not get to choose how we die, but we *can* choose how we live." Our future is yet unwritten.

RachLovesTV Thanks to @Lisaw13 for another great #freakyfriday pick! I'm still making my way through them, slowly but surely. ☺️ 6y

I've been having bad luck with audiobooks lately, but I'm really liking this one so far. It's YA about a teen boy who is having a really hard time--his boyfriend committed suicide about a year ago, he's bullied, and he has family issues. Oh, and he also gets repeatedly abducted by aliens, who want him to decide whether or not he should let the world end. Such a good premise, and I just want to give the main character a hug.

GlassAsDiamonds "Ohh, that's a good one. Hmm, need to look that up. Blegh, wasn't a fan, OMG I HATE THAT BOOK SO MUCH, hey cool loved that one" ---> me, reading your TBR (but I love the Bingo Card layout!!!! ????). 7y
jessie1287 @GlassAsDiamonds omg which one did you hate??? Lol 7y
GlassAsDiamonds ? It'll probably win me "Unpopular Opinion of the Month" but... The Handmaids Tale. I just wanted to scream "FIGHT MF'er, FIGHT" at the main character almost all the way through, she drove me completely crazy and I hated almost every moment of the book. (Okay, so yes, I was not bonding with her, we are polar opposite personality types. The friend I buddy read with loved it though). 7y
jessie1287 @GlassAsDiamonds I've started that book 4 times so far and keep putting it down cause I can't get into it at all so I'm not surprised to hear you say that lol. 7y
GlassAsDiamonds Ha! And here I thought I was alone in that unpopular opinion!!! 😊😊😊😊 Good luck getting through it this time around (I'd recommend the book not an eReader.... a book is cheaper to throw at a wall!! 😉😉😉). 7y
