The Memoirs of Cleopatra
The Memoirs of Cleopatra: A Novel | Margaret George
Bestselling novelist Margaret George brings to life the glittering kingdom of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, in this luch, sweeping, and richly detailed saga. Told in Cleopatra's own voice, this is a mesmerizing tale of ambition, passion, and betrayl, which begins when the twenty-year-old queen seeks out the most powerful man in the world, Julius Caesar, and does not end until, having survived the assassination of Caesar and the defeat of the second man she loves, Marc Antony, she plots her own death rather than be paraded in triumph through the streets of Rome. Most of all, in its richness and authenticity, it is an irresistible story that reveals why Margaret George's work has been widely acclaimed.

I only have two words to describe this book:
Oh. Wow.
This has been a phenomenal book about an amazing woman - Cleopatra.
I've read much about Egypt, but this book gave me new insights into the Egyptian royal family and the intriguing life of Cleopatra. This is a book I'd love to read again, as it contains so many details - Her life with Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony.
All in all a brilliant book.

Had I been more familiar with the time period, I might have found this a bit better to read. It is a well-written account of Cleopatra from her perspective, which was interesting, but I found myself going on Google field trips to look up people, places, and incidents. I think that took away from the enjoyment of the book. If you‘re not compelled to Google everything then you may enjoy this book more.

A bit late on the #bookreport and first one I‘ve done in ages but I‘m starting to feel like my old reading self again after a couple of months. I‘ve even decided to tackle the 1100 plus page Cleopatra book which I‘ve had forever. Think I‘m ready for a good chunkster!

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen What???? 1100 pages??!?!? No thanks 🤪 4y

Margaret George‘s books are awesome historical fiction! But beware those with #bigbookphobia they‘re usually around 1000 pages! I still have a few to go - but I like knowing they are there and have loved them all.

It breaks my heart but I'll DNF this one 😢It started off really well, with an intelligent, strong Cleopatra and wonderful descriptions of ancient Egypt. But Cleopatra soon started sounding like a naive, love-driven teenager, and the story's main focus shifted to her romance with Caesar. I just can't read another page about her love concerns or Caesar's lovemaking skills. Sorry Cleo, but my TBR is too long for me to gamble on another 700 pages. 💔

JazzFeathers I don't blame you 7y

#bookmail aww yisss! I fell in mad love with Ancient Egypt historical fiction when I read Pauline Gedge's "Child of the Morning". Ordered this beauty not knowing that it's 900+ pages long ?I'm itching to start reading it but not sure if I'm in the mood for such a big book right now. Decisions, decisions...

Tsubame I'd start reading if it's itching so much 😉 In case it's good then 900+ pages of bliss are ahead of you and at the end you might regret there isn't more left. If it's bad, then bail. Too many good books out there waiting! 😆 7y
BookishTrish My husband still remembers how absorbed I was in this book and I read it well over ten years ago. Read it! It's a treat. 7y
Aninski @Tsubame that's a great way of looking at it! I feel intimated because it will probably take me like a month to get through it, and that drives me crazy exactly because there are so many good books waiting out there 😆I haven't LOVED a book in a long time though, and like @BookishTrish said, this is probably a good candidate... Sooo alright, I'll do it!! Thank you both for the little push 😁 7y

Margaret George is the queen of historical fiction. This is one of my favorites. She imagines a rich and gorgeous history that makes the woman more than a myth, a woman searching for love and acceptance in a land ruled by men.

I love pretty much anything that Margaret George has written, and this might be my favorite of hers, garnering a reread from me every few years. Humanizes and makes very real such historical figures as Cleopatra, her siblings, Caesar, Antony, Octavian, etc. So evocative. A wonderful epic story.
