Smitten Kitchen Every Day
Smitten Kitchen Every Day: Triumphant and Unfussy New Favorites | Deb Perelman
32 posts | 12 read | 23 to read
Deb Perelman, award-winning blogger and New York Times best-selling author of The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, understands that a happy discovery in the kitchen has the ability to completely change the course of your day. Whether were cooking for ourselves, for a date night in, for a Sunday supper with friends, or for family on a busy weeknight, we all want recipes that are unfussy to make with triumphant results. Deb thinks that cooking should be an escape from drudgery. Smitten Kitchen Every Day: Triumphant and Unfussy New Favorites presents more than one hundred impossible-to-resist recipesalmost all of them brand-new, plus a few favorites from her websitethat will make you want to stop what youre doing right now and cook. These are real recipes for real peoplepeople with busy lives who dont want to sacrifice flavor or quality to eat meals theyre really excited about. Youll want to put these recipes in your Forever Files: Sticky Toffee Waffles (sticky toffee pudding you can eat for breakfast), Everything Drop Biscuits with Cream Cheese, and Magical Two-Ingredient Oat Brittle (a happy accident). Theres a (hopelessly, unapologetically inauthentic) Kale Caesar with Broken Eggs and Crushed Croutons, a Mango Apple Ceviche with Sunflower Seeds, and a Grandma-Style Chicken Noodle Soup that fixes everything. You can make Leek, Feta, and Greens Spiral Pie, crunchy Brussels and Three Cheese Pasta Bake that tastes better with brussels sprouts than without, Beefsteak Skirt Steak Salad, and Bacony Baked Pintos with the Works (as in, giant bowls of beans that you can dip into like nachos). And, of course, no meal is complete without cake (and cookies and pies and puddings): Chocolate Peanut Butter Icebox Cake (the icebox cake to end all icebox cakes), Pretzel Linzers with Salted Caramel, Strawberry Cloud Cookies, Bake Sale Winning-est Gooey Oat Bars, as well as the ultimate Party Cake Builderfour one-bowl cakes for all occasions with mix-and-match frostings (bonus: less time spent doing dishes means everybody wins). Written with Debs trademark humor and gorgeously illustrated with her own photographs, Smitten Kitchen Every Day is filled with what are sure to be your new favorite things to cook.

Saturday morning means time to try a new recipe for a late and leisurely breakfast. I don‘t own a waffle iron, but I easily adjusted the recipe to bake waffle sticks instead. The batter includes blended dates, and then the waffles are served with a delicious toffee sauce.

🤔 Sometimes I scratch my head and wonder why I purchased something. Exhibit A - beautiful book and I would LOVE to eat in Deb‘s kitchen. But I‘m unlikely to make the majority of the recipes in this book because despite the title they aren‘t THAT unfussy. I don‘t have time to make my own pea tortellini or galette crust, or to track down green plantains, etc. (Well, maybe I would if I spent less time on Litsy, but let‘s be realistic.) 😜

Tamra But, the food does look delicious so if you have the time, this a pick. Also if you like sweets, 1/3 of the book is devoted to them. Not my thing, which is another reason I wonder why I bought it. 5y
Prairiegirl_reading I have the same issue with Alison Roman‘s book Nothing Fancy. One of the recipes calls for an ingredient that she advises if you can‘t find it at the grocery store you can just order it online. There are ingredients I‘ve never heard of and I‘m kind of a foodie. That‘s nothing fancy? I don‘t think so. 😕 I have yet to make anything from it. 5y
Tamra @Prairiegirl_reading I think when “professional” cooks and chefs write books sometimes they forget not everyone has access to specialty ingredients or can spend $20 on something that they‘ll only use for one recipe. This week I looked at one with that issue - unknown or hard to find. Or they underestimate the amount of time it takes to make a new dish the first couple of times. (edited) 5y

AlaMich Have you ever checked out Deb‘s blog? She‘s a very funny writer, but I agree, her recipes aren‘t necessarily simple. 5y
Tamra @AlaMich yes, I do like her blog! 😁 I like to ogle a lot of foodie pics and recipes I won‘t ever make. 😆 (edited) 5y
AlaMich @Tamra She used to post adorable pix of her kids, but as they‘ve gotten older she hasn‘t been posting many. 5y
Palimpsest Thanks for the honest review because I had been thinking about getting this. I love beautiful cookbooks, but I prefer most of the recipes to not be overly tedious. 5y
Tamra @Palimpsest if you can check it out of the library then you can judge for yourself and perhaps make a few dishes. Cookbooks are soooo personal! 5y
valeriegeary There's a great/easy lentil soup recipe in this one. And the biscuit recipe works up pretty quick too! 🙌🏻 But yeah....I have definitely steered clear of a lot of the other recipes in this one 5y
cathipink I do love her first one but haven't made much from this one. I will say, I have yet to have a misfire with any recipe of hers I've made. There are definitely some recipes I save for the weekend or when I have extra time, but they've always been worth it. 5y
Tamra @valeriegeary I did pin the everything bagel seasoning biscuit because it looks so good! 5y
Tamra @cathipink I bet they are very tasty and that is a good way to describe some of them - weekend cooking. 👍🏾 5y
Ddzmini The plantains are also called “platanos” and are usually by bananas and are really good when cooked (😉 especially if you bake them w/ a little cinnamon and sugar and have them with ice cream) 5y
Tamra @Ddzmini yummm! 5y

And that‘s a wrap!! Another @DeweysReadathon in the books! 🎉🎉📚📚 I finished two books and started a third, and also spent a chunk of time reading two of my cookbooks.

Quite happy with my hours, considering all the other things I did yesterday. Happy Sunday, Littens! And congrats to all those who participated - big or small goals - it‘s always a fun time!

Doing #feedareader shopping this weekend. @Rachel.Rencher let me know if there is a book(s) your dying for! My notes say cheese grater and piping stuff, still yeah or nay? ? Anything special you need/want!

Rachel.Rencher Oh my gosh how sweet of you to reach out! 🙈 I got a wonderful piping kit in my last box so I'm all set there. A couple books that have been on my radar are Without Merit - Colleen Hoover, Americanah - Adichie and Big Little Lies - Moriarty. Any one of those would be lovely, or surprise me! 🤓 Thank you again!! ❤ 7y
benchley1 @Rachel.Rencher of course! If you think if any wants this week let me know!! Otherwise I'll try my best😉 7y

Leftover soup for lunch on this sunny but cool day.

The recipe is from the tagged cookbook: Spiced carrot and pepper soup with a couscous swirl.

#booksandlunch #cookbook

EvieBee Looks delish! 🍲 7y
Tamra Yum! 7y
alisiakae @EvieBee The couscous really makes it!! Otherwise, it is a little boring. 😃 It‘s seasoned with harissa, ginger, cumin and a touch of cinnamon, next time I think I will add more harissa than the recipe called for. 7y

A little pre-book breakfast club (since neither of us has read the book we picked yet but didn‘t want to put off breakfast any longer 💁). Super simple recipe for loaded breakfast potato skins in the latest Smitten Kitchen cookbook, but I‘m a fan of pretty much everything in the book anyway ... I switched out sour cream and bacon for hollandaise and fried squash.

Because Cookbook Hoarder. #sorrynotsorry) but it won‘t be my last. This book was borrowed from the library but I‘ll likely break down and buy it. Picture of finished dish on my Instagram.

What is the best kind of book? The kind where you get to chat with the author about going to Italy for food, Kansas City BBQ and just hear about her methods in general for recipe development (lots of testing, thank goodness). Adored seeing Deb Perelman live today. Love me some Smitten Kitchen.

Kaylamburson Deb Perelman is such a genuine person! I loved hearing her speak! 7y

Count me among Deb Perelman's most loyal fans. (I couldn't even tell you the number of her recipes that have become family favorites.) With incredible charm & a passion for cooking, Perelman shares recipes for food that you really want to eat. I've just started cooking from it and have already found so many new family favorites! - S.B.
