Lila: A Novel | Marilynne Robinson
Winner of the National Book Critics Circle AwardNational Book Award FinalistA new American classic from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Gilead and HousekeepingMarilynne Robinson, one of the greatest novelists of our time, returns to the town of Gilead in an unforgettable story of a girlhood lived on the fringes of society in fear, awe, and wonder. Lila, homeless and alone after years of roaming the countryside, steps inside a small-town Iowa church-the only available shelter from the rain-and ignites a romance and a debate that will reshape her life. She becomes the wife of a minister, John Ames, and begins a new existence while trying to make sense of the life that preceded her newfound security. Neglected as a toddler, Lila was rescued by Doll, a canny young drifter, and brought up by her in a hardscrabble childhood. Together they crafted a life on the run, living hand to mouth with nothing but their sisterly bond and a ragged blade to protect them. Despite bouts of petty violence and moments of desperation, their shared life was laced with moments of joy and love. When Lila arrives in Gilead, she struggles to reconcile the life of her makeshift family and their days of hardship with the gentle Christian worldview of her husband which paradoxically judges those she loves. Revisiting the beloved characters and setting of Robinson's Pulitzer Prize-winning Gilead and Home, a National Book Award finalist, Lila is a moving expression of the mysteries of existence that is destined to become an American classic.

I know this was a good book... but I'm in such a slump lately. I'm pushing through and nothing is standing out to me! I'm in need of recommendations!

Prairiegirl_reading I wish I had a good slump buster for you. 😞 The only thing that worked for me lately was to try not to think about books and watch every single episode of rupaul‘s drag race I could find. I don‘t necessarily recommend that specifically, just saying I empathize. My reading brain just needed a break. 3y

I actually finished this some weeks ago. I‘ve read 3 of the Gilead books - all loans from the library- and as you can see, I found a copy of Jack on my last visit. Honestly, I think I need to purchase the box set because I really kind of love Marilynne Robinson‘s writing, and each book comes with its own astonishing meditative gifts. #marilynnerobinson #gileadseries

BkClubCare I could suggest you skip to the last quarter, but this “practice” is new for me - I used to be aghast when friends tell me to try and read the end first! But now in my stage of reading experiences, I am finding it a useful tool when I get stuck. I hope to someday reread Gilead. Nice to connect with you 😊 3y
BkClubCare Whoops - this comment was meant for your Jack post. Nevermind me. 3y

I feel like this would be a good book to read when it's raining or snowing. It's such a quiet read. Like listening to a old country song or reading a poem. I kept forgetting I was reading it and would set it aside while I went back to reading an e-book or two before picking it back up.
I did like it. If I was in the right mood for it, I wouldn't of taken so long to get through it. The writing was excellent. 3.5 stars

Marilynne Robinson‘s beautiful talk, and her personal, considered answer to the question I asked, was so moving it brought me to tears - it was as inspiring and expansive, thoughtful but full of joy, as I was hoping for from her. She talked about being a socialist in the world today, faith and society and the importance of human connection, and made me feel that the world was wonderful (hard task in today‘s climate).

I'm in love with this trilogy. I wish it'd never end and Ms. Robinson would write about Gilead forever. I love the harsh poetry of this novel, an ode to the forgotten and to the ones living at the magins of society. I didn't expect Lila's story to be so wonderfully painful to read at times. Topics such as empathy, forgiveness and how past defines us dominate this novel, but above all else, it's about love in all its endless shapes and forms.

Such beautiful, thoughtful writing. Robinson has written these Gilead characters each with their own distinct voice, and each successive book gives more insight into their lives. These are simple, character driven stories set in small-town Iowa in the 1940s and 50s, and religion is rather central, but I absolutely loved them all, despite being a non-religious small-town Iowan who assumed she wouldn‘t. 🤷🏻‍♀️

All the love! ❤️

Her writing is beautiful, but this book was not written for me. The structure jumps between different times in Lila's life, but this only adds to the meandering feeling. Only few stories work completely without chapter breaks and for me, this is not one of them.

Lila is one of three books that takes place in Gilead and tells the story of John Ame's young wife. It's a lot darker than Gilead because Lila's life was difficult. She was hardened and has a hard time allowing herself to love and be loved. That is her great journey. Beautiful writing as I've come to expect from Robinson!

Gilead symbolizes a world for me I can hardly relate to, but I loved to read about it. All this gentleness and understanding: it shows so much optimism. It offers a home to wild, drifting Lila. She can be herself there and she is also able to open herself to Christianity, with all the existential questions she has. John Ames is the best person she could meet. I think we all can use a John Ames in our lives sometimes. #manbooker Picture: Portugal

Holy cow, geez. I'm really lost here on what to say. This book like any Good book will break your ❤️ and then put it back together. I think what is being examined here is the questioning of faith. How can someone believe and trust in God when their childhood was full of pain - pain inflicted by adults (people you should be able to trust). This is the book I needed at this point on my life. This book is shucking oysters for supper and finding a warm, glowing pearl. It's striking up a conversation at a cocktail party and finding that you have met a kindred spirit. It is so much, so unspeakably and untellably much that it may be the finest novel I've ever read. Every sentence requires attention, and in exchange for that attention you are given a view of existence that is crystalline, raw, honest, painful and joyous.
