The Mother of Black Hollywood
The Mother of Black Hollywood: A Memoir | Jenifer Lewis
The "Mega Diva" and legendary star of Black-ish looks back on her memorable journey to fame and the unforgettable life lessons she learned along the way. Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a mid-western girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire readers. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers," Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating. We watch as Jenifer develops icon status stemming from a series of legendary screen roles as the sassy, yet loveable, mama or auntie. And we watch as her emotional disturbances, culminating in a breakdown while filming The Temptations movie, launch her on a continuing search for answers, love, and healing. Written with no-holds-barred honesty and illustrated with sixteen-pages of color photos, this gripping memoir is filled with insights gained through a unique life that offers a universal message: "Love yourself so that love will not be a stranger when it comes." From her first taste of applause at five years old to landing on Broadway within eleven days of graduation and ultimately achieving success in movies, television and global concert halls, Jenifer reveals her outrageous life story with lots of humor, a few regrets and most importantly, unbridled joy. Candid, warm and wonderfully inspiring, The Mother of Black Hollywood intimately reveals the heart of a woman who lives life to the fullest.

1) Jennifer Lewis's The Mother of Black Hollywood is hands down my favorite autobiography. Ms. Lewis narrates the audiobook and takes you through a eveey emotions, tears and laughter.

2) 🤔

3) Isabel Wilkerson - The Warmth of Other Suns was a tome and I loved it. I cried at the end. Ms. Wilkerson is now an autobuy author. I have Caste but I'm saving it until I tackle some of the other nonfiction on my shelf.

I‘ve learned in life that what you give to others is what provides the most value to your life. There I was, a mess myself, yet I still had something to offer that would have an effect on another person‘s world.

The weather is better allowing me to get outside and this book is playing while I am trying to walk/run. She is amazing. I only on chapter 6 and The level of self reflection and honesty so far is startling but also refreshing. I have enjoyed her as an actress but this book makes me appreciate her more. This an autobiography you want to add to your reading list, it‘s even better if you get the audiobook

Loving this book for my work outs! It‘s so honest and raw. I have laughed and cried so far. It‘s a little strange to be running/walking with tears from laughing or sadness. It‘s so relatable so far. Ms.Lewis does not sugar coat her highs and lows. I am glad I have this as an audiobook. It more like your Auntie telling you about the her life than book. #woc #bio #audiobook #blackish #sexybitch

Listened to the audiobook read by her, she did an amazing job.
Overall interesting and I‘ve always loved her but it seemed to get pretty slow at times.
A good amount of stories were a little longer than needed maybe.
If anyone‘s a fan then it‘s a definite listen, it‘s just not as good as other memoirs I‘ve heard the last year.

⭐️⭐️⭐️If I had to describe this book in three words it would be men, anger, and broadway. These were the three reoccurring themes throughout the entire book. Although I appreciated reading about Jenifer's wild life, I soon became tired of the same topics. This was a very interesting read for me because although some of the chapters were redundant, I still found them entertaining.

Between traveling on vacation and traveling for work this is the first book I‘ve finished in two weeks! The actual fuck! It‘s okay because a lot of great things have been happening! This book was worth the read. I love Jenifer Lewis and I was happy to read this memoir. But the writing isnt that great in my opinion. Things feel disconnected at times and that affected the flow. I would still recommend if you are a fan of hers!

I can‘t imagine this as anything other than an audiobook. Jenifer Lewis is a force. I‘ve enjoyed her over the years, but I never knew anything about her. This is a MEATY memoir. Much is about her impoverished childhood, struggle with mental illness, and the devastation of the AIDS crisis. But it‘s still a celebrity memoir: name dropping and gossiping, etc. and her observations and SINGING are so funny. She‘s Jenifer Motherfucking Lewis, y‘all. 4/5

This was a very enjoyable audiobook that was really funny while also discussing serious issues such as mental illness, addiction, and abuse. Lewis's performance of the text is a delight . I would not have minded had it been a smidge shorter, but as Lewis discusses occasionally, sometimes you just have to deal with too much of a good thing!

I picked the book based on an interview with Sam Sanders on his podcast, It‘s Been a Minute. The interview was fantastic with Jenifer Lewis talking a lot about being bipolar. I was hoping the book would be similar, the book did talk about it but not until about 2/3 through, which made the last 1/3 really interesting but the rest not so much.

She was very open about her life and despite her saying this book wasn‘t a Hollywood tell-all, I think I could have done with less name dropping of who she slept with in Hollywood over the years. Guys, just go listen to this audiobook. Ms. Lewis discusses everything from touring with Bette Midler to her bipolar disorder to sneaking into the DNC to see Obama accept the nomination. She also discusses her sexual assaults & her sex addiction. Like I said before, it's not for the faint of heart. The language is raw, however it's told with much humor and a lot of grace. If you're on the fence, go to IG & watch her homemade book commercials.
