2.5/5⭐ It was fun to read the precursor to masked heroes like Zorro, at least until the end. Any agency Marguerite had disappeared as she dissolved into a useless mess. The narrative slowed down w/ constant repetition of the stakes & thought processes of the various characters. The “twist“ plot device relied on the antisemitic stereotypes of Jews being dirty & inferior, which even the characters we're supposed to root for subscribed to. #roll100

This one is another book club pick, and so far my least favorite, despite it being my pick! It wasn‘t as fun as I was expecting, and has a REALLY slow start. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

#BookReport a little late - I did actually check some books off this week, including the tagged, which isn't even pictured!! I also finished Venetia, which was enjoyable but not my favorite Heyer just because there were SO MANY ANNOYING PEOPLE in poor Venetia's life! Oh my gosh! Just leave her ALONE! 😂 I also finished Mystery in the Mews (fun but not life-changing) and this random little hardcover I've owned for years - it was a bit odd but not ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) bad. I bailed on Runaway even though I have enjoyed several of May's other books, this one just wasn't working for me. It was kind of depressing and I don't need that kind of negativity in my life right now!!!

CindyMyLifeIsLit Venetia is one of my favorite Heyers because I‘ve read so few romances where they just immediately click. I think she communicates the depth of their connection, how absolutely perfect they are for each other, so well. I like the “I hate you until I love you” plots too, but I think Venetia‘s story is the most romantic of Heyer‘s regencies. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @CindyMyLifeIsLit - I absolutely loved Venetia herself, and totally loved her love story. It was the annoying neighbor who kept interfering in her life and acting so obnoxious that drove me absolutely crazy and honestly brought down my enjoyment of the entire story. He was SO smug and condescending! But I agree that the romance in this one is delightful. 2y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @thearomaofbooks I thought Oswald Denny was hilarious! Trying so hard to be mysterious and Byronic, only to have his cover blown by his mother trying to force him to eat dinner and offering him tonics while his sisters laugh at him! Then he morphs into a grumpy teenager. 2y

#WeeklyForecast - Well, it would be nice to actually check off some books 😂 but between work being crazy, Grandma being in the hospital (she had emergency surgery but is thankfully recovering very well, especially considering she's 91!!), and me having an unfortunate addiction to Stardew Valley, I'm not super optimistic! 😆 Should be finishing Venetia today. I think I'm going to read Murder in the Mews next, then The Scarlet Pimpernel (which I ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) forgot to add to the windowsill) for #LMPBC. After that it's anyone's guess!!! For now, I'm definitely not off to play Stardew Valley 😂

TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen @Ruthiella @ChaoticMissAdventures @rabbitprincess @Megabooks - Thank you all so much!! She's very independent and determined and already doing so much better!! Grandpa is still alive also and they still live on their own; Grandpa can still drive - they are in astonishingly good shape for their age. Yesterday she was allowed to start having clear liquids - her first food in a WEEK! But she already looks better & is headed to rehab Tuesday! 2y
TheSpineView Glad to know your Grandmother is doing well! So scary when they get that age! I think it is fantastic that they can still be independent. 2y

Hey #GroupV ! I'm excited about reading some classics this round as I've really been trying to delve more into them this year! Here are several from my TBR that I don't THINK are too chunky (I don't own all of them so for some I'm going off of GR page counts lol) Let me know if any of these appeal to you, or any of them you definitely don't want to read, or you've already read, etc. And I'm interested to see what books you all have on your radars!

fredthemoose I haven‘t ready any of these, so any work for me! The only classics I have copies of are Lolita and The Souls of Black Folk, I‘m happy to get my hands on another. I‘ll check out the GR list! 2y
jimfields3 I have The Scarlet Pimpernel on my TBR (it‘s even a #bookspinbingo choice this month), and I‘m open to any of these others as well. 2y

BeckyWithTheGoodBooks I have The Picture of Dorian Gray on my list too! 😀 I would read that! I‘ve read some of the others, but The Pearl, Kidnapped, Crusoe, and Pimpernel would work for me! 2y
fredthemoose Picture of Dorian Gray would be great! 2y
jimfields3 I should have seen these comments before commenting on another post. I‘d be glad to read Dorian Gray, too. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @fredthemoose @jimfields3 @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks - Yay!! I think I'll go with Dorian Gray. I found a copy of it at library discard sale last month so I've been meaning to read it ever since!! 2y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @fredthemoose @jimfields3 @TheAromaofBooks Yes!! Dorian will be a double whammy for me in terms on getting off my TBR list, so I am excited for this pick! 🥳 2y

The premise was interesting with the mysterious English Scarlet Pimpernel rescuing French aristocrats in the midst of the French Revolution from the guillotine, but it ended up being surprisingly predictable. I also thought it could have been quite a bit shorter with the amount of repetitive material about how Marguerite was feeling at any given time.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

Lcsmcat Nice cover! 4y
Sace @Lcsmcat it's really sad that until today I never appreciated how nice the cover was! 4y
Lcsmcat Well we spend more time looking at the spines than the covers, so we don‘t always remember them. 4y

ravenlee I really enjoyed this one. My sister had a bit of an obsession with the movie version from the 80s that made me reluctant to pick it up, but after seeing and loving the stage musical I took a chance. Still like the musical better though. 4y
Sace @Lcsmcat this is true. 4y
Sace @ravenlee I didn't even know there was a movie made in the 80s. I'm obsessed with the Daffy Duck version 🤣 4y
ravenlee I believe Jane Seymour starred. Probably a TV movie now that I think about it. 4y
StaceyKondla I should add this to my TBR 😊 4y

Poor Marguerite! And Sir Percy as well. Though for the beginning of the story I thought him a heartless brute.

I have a question for @Librarybelle and @BarbaraBB about #readingEurope2020...

Can I count the tagged book toward Hungary since the author is Hungarian? Or would I count it as France since that's where it takes place? Orrr... Can I count it as both? 😁

(Picture from the internet as I just had to include Daffy as the Scarlet Pumpernickel.)

Librarybelle I‘d say count it as whichever way you wish. You can do the Hungarian angle for author or the France angle for setting. It‘s so low key that if you wanted to do both Hungary and France, I guess you could! Haha! However you wish the challenge to work for you! 😁 5y
Sace @Librarybelle Woo hoo! This is my kind of challenge 🤣 5y
BarbaraBB I‘d go for Hungary, I think that‘s it will be easy to find another one for France - but it‘s your choice, as @Librarybelle says 👌 (edited) 5y

Sace @BarbaraBB Agreed, I put it down for Hungary yesterday, but started second guessing myself today. And I like the elastic nature of the challenge (especially since I'm trying to only use books I already own.) 5y
Sace @BarbaraBB oh! I never finished reading The Count of Monte Cristo! I'll use that for France! 5y
BarbaraBB That‘s perfect for France! You‘re having a great kick-off! 5y

In this new episode we talk about the pressure of not having read all the classics, and which ones we still want to read. We then check one off that list with this month‘s discussion of The Scarlet Pimpernel and dig into its portrayal of the French Revolution, conflicted marital relationships, and characters‘ weak communication skills. Listen on our website at eclecticreaders.fireside.fm/69 or on Apple Podcasts/podcast apps under Eclectic Readers!

The story was okay. The pacing seemed a bit weird as some of it was funny and I read quickly, while other parts dragged a bit and seemed repetitive and the ending was quite abrupt. The use of narration was also a bit odd at times. I did like the main characters, though. Overall it was pretty fun but I don‘t feel the need to read more in the series.

This month we‘re reading The Scarlet Pimpernel, so we‘re going to have a segment during the podcast about classics still on our TBR and if we feel pressure to read books that are considered “classics.” So, what about you? Are you a classics fan? Are there any books you feel like you should read just because they‘re classics? Let us know your thoughts in the comments and listen to the new episode on September 15th to see if we give you a shoutout!

Pickpick

I mostly listened to this book using a library audio book (even though I‘ve owned a print copy forever) and I don‘t know why I waited so long! Even my kids got into the story. It‘s a great swashbuckling adventure with disguises and a really terrible bad guy that you love to hate. #bbrc #growup #writtenbeforeIwasborn #readmyowndamnbooks #summersendreadathon

LibrarianRyan I have wanted to read this for a while. 5y
