Between a pick/so so. I adore this author and her 2nd book, but I didn‘t love this one 😕 It DID have her trade mark style... but I listened on audiobook and there was way too much cursing. I‘m light years away from being prudish so the average person might have a REALLY hard time 🙁 plus WAY too many recipes and listing of ingredients etc. Thankfully it still had relatable topics about relationships and her all-star cat ♥️

This was an interesting one. It's between a so-so and a pick, but I'm going to go with pick because her story is definitely unique and I can't say I've ever read anything like it before. A few of the essays seemed like unnecessary filler but I did really appreciate her raw honesty and there were a few funny parts.

Megabooks Her other book is definitely better! 3mo

Samantha Irby‘s writing has been compared to Sloane Crosley, Laurie Notaro, Jenny Lawson and others whose work I adore. But, no offense authors I love, Irby is on another level- like a “get-on-my-level-son” level. I did some immersion reading and Irby sounds just as I‘d hoped on #Audible. I laughed out loud, all alone, in the bathtub, in the car, in bed and at work many, many times. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Andrea313 I love her so much, and her audiobooks are perfection! Enjoy! 10mo

Book 2 for 24in48!

I do love me a Samantha Irby essay collection. She is so funny and dry. The collection is so well-balanced, with laugh-out-loud lines about hanging out with moms, a spec she wrote for a TV show, and crusty garbage that guys pull, but then she‘ll hit you with a gorgeous piece like “My Mother, My Daughter” about taking care of her mom when she was really sick.

BlameJennyJane Great review. This is on my nightstand but I didn‘t include it as part of my #24in48 TBR. I‘m now reconsidering because of your review. Thanks! 10mo

Join me for #StackAttack2019 I‘d ❤️ to see our stacks dwindle, so tag me please. I‘m going to keep count of my stack reads with a number at end of the post. I‘m only counting book owned prior to 2019.

I really liked Irby‘s 1st book and enjoyed this too. The sex related content is over-the-top and tiresome. She is self-aware and writes that she has a “child-like need to be shocking and provocative”. But overall, it‘s 3/5🐓s (1)

HOTPock3tt @Wife yeah it hasn‘t been long... since I was mostly just borrowing from the library. I always thought my apartment is too small for a bookshelf 😪 But I threw all that out the window recently and started buying!! Now the unread list is piling up 😅 lol 11mo
BarbaraJean @Wife Hahahaha—I was gonna say years, but then I thought: “I do that every week, too!” There are books on my TBR I‘ve been “meaning to read”‘for 20+ years! 11mo

I liked We Are Never Meeting in Real Life way better than this one. I realize that Meaty is an older book of essays, and I think that Samantha Irby has really grown as a writer. The first half of the book was really funny and her childhood is incredibly interesting. It was entertaining which is all I was looking for!

The beginning of this book, where she writes about her upbringing is amazing. I loved it. Then she devolves into whining and complaining about relationships and men, culminating in the longest essay in the book, Bitches are My Jam, which I hated. I was tempted to pan, but I remembered the beginning. 2.5⭐️

#bookishupdate Saturday edition

I‘m continuing with #nonfictionNovember and enjoying the three books in the top panel.

I just checked out Go Ask Alice because I have a library/Overdrive problem. Does anyone remember that Ask Alice internet thing from Columbia U health services where someone would answer sex/drug/life questions anonymously? Circa 1998?

Also I bought Fortune Smiles because it is the best #shortstory collection ever!

Flaneurette I have the same overdrive problem and Fortune Smiles really is awesome 13mo

Megabooks @TheBookHippie Yeah, I was a freshman in college then and my roommate‘s bf went to Columbia and introduced it to us. I think they did turn some of the questions into a book. It was a Dear Abby for the 14-22 set. (edited) 13mo
AlaMich GAA scared the bejesus out of me as a tween! 13mo
jenniferajanes My library doesn‘t have Overdrive. 😭😭😭 To compensate somewhat, I have discovered the joys of Prime Reading and am doing a cheap trial of Kindle Unlimited. *sigh* 13mo
Megabooks @AlaMich I think that was the point from reading the history of the book. It was the 70s version of Beyond Scared Straight. 13mo
Megabooks @jenniferajanes Oh no! I have Prime reading and do use it from time to time, but I couldn‘t imagine not having Overdrive!!! 😫😫😫 I hope your library gets it or Libby 🤞🏻🤞🏻 13mo
AlaMich @Megabooks That‘s my understanding too. It worked!! 😱 13mo
irre I love Fortune Smiles!! I have yet to read his novel. I really need to change that! 13mo
jenniferajanes @Megabooks Thanks! They use something called CloudLibrary, but the selection is abysmal. 😫 13mo

Irby's collection of essays is certainly no-holds barred. Covering topics from her difficult childhood and her dating life to living with Crohn's Disease and her love of food, Irby offers her unfiltered views on life, love, and tacos. Some of the essays can get a little raunchy (and possibly TMI?), so I had to take off one star for that. However, for people who aren't squeamish, the book is funny as hell and moving too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley

Meghan1 I will definitely have to read this one!! I have Crohn‘s disease as well. 1y
EKonrad @Meghan1 I thought it was interesting to read a first-hand account of living with Crohn‘s. Haven‘t seen that much and it gave me so much more empathy for people with that diagnosis! 1y
Meghan1 @EKonrad it can be pretty rough and it is definitely not pretty. I have never seen a book written by a fellow person with Crohn‘s before! 1y
EKonrad @Meghan1 I hope you like it! She definitely doesn‘t shy away from the details of her experiences! 1y

There was some good stuff in here, but for me the profanity and potty humor made it a bit of a slog. Which is strange, as I‘m all about profanity and potty humor. It just seemed a bit overkill, maybe because they were originally written as separate essays, and once collected it became to much. Some very funny and true moments about socio-economic disparity and also about dating. I really wanted to like this wholeheartedly. Alas...

CarolynM Love this cover! When my daughter was around the age of 2 she would eat meat but not a lot else. One day we took her to a nearby urban farm for a day out and pointed out the chickens to her. "Mmmm ... meaty!" she said. ? 1y

Irby is now a must-read author for me. I loved We Are Never Meeting in Real Life so couldn‘t wait to read this re-release of essays written when she was a bit younger. Loved this too, though it was a harder read since it covered more challenging life experiences, and because her thoughts and feelings about some topics felt more fraught and unsettled. But I laughed out loud many, many times. And, unexpectedly, there were recipes(!), which I adored.

Absolutely a pick and I love Samantha Irby but this book felt way more harsh than We are Never Meeting in Real Life. Harsh because Irby has had a difficult life, not because the writing isn't solid. Listening to Irby talking about her parents is genuinely heartbreaking. There's still a lot of humor here it just felt like it was coming from a place of deep hurt.
