A Man Called Ove: A Novel by Fredrik Backman
review
olivia.ferz
Mehso-so

I went into it expecting nothing and it was still disappointing. The story was dragging on for the first 250 pages with nothing happening and then picked up in the last 50 pages.

I couldn't care about the characters. I thought there'd be more magical elements or some sort of explanation for the magic diary. But that was just ignored. The whole book felt like it was trying to delve into some deeper meaning but completely failed.

#bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

Here's my bookspin pick for January. Starting this book a little later than planned so I'm not sure if I'd finish by this month since I'm a slow reader. But here goes!

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! The humor is a little dark in this one, but I thoroughly enjoyed it when I read it last year. 3y
umbrellagirl This book is amazing. 3y
olivia.ferz @umbrellagirl I tried reading it last yr but gave up after abt 20 pages because of uni deadlines. So hopefully I'm going to finish it this time😊 3y
olivia.ferz @TheAromaofBooks Will definitely try finish it this time! 😊 3y

#bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

Here's my bookspin list for Jan 2021. I loved doing the challenge last year. And hopefully it'll get me out of my current book slump! 😁
I have only 14 books in my physical tbr right now. So I just assigned double numbers to the first 6 books, if that's okay.

alisonrose How does bookspin work? I tried to find an explainer post but there‘s a lot of posts under the tag 😬 3y
5280reader @alisonrose Here‘s a link from @TheAromaofBooks that helped me. I‘m new to this but it‘s explained well here. https://www.litsy.com/web/post/1989556 3y

I don't understand the point of story. So what if people want to buy clothes and stuff anytime throughout a year instead of just festivals? She criticizes her friends for going away on holidays during Diwali to escape the holiday stress and then complains about people staying indoors. What is she trying to convey? #goodolddays ? All the short stories that I've read in this book seem very preachy to me. The author seems to thinks she's always right

ju.ca.no That sounds annoying! 4y
olivia.ferz @ju.ca.no It is. Though I'm only on the 7th story and there's about 43 more to go, so hopefully it'll become better 4y

This book isn't capturimg my attention. Why hasn't anything happened yet apart from Amy going missing? I know I'm supposed to feel sorry for her but I feel like she's being a hypocrite, a snake. She talks about being cool with her husband being laid-back. But I think it just pisses her off. I just get annoyed when I read her chapters. Even her husband Nick is kind of getting on my nerves. He seems to have an excuse for everything wrong with him.

Heideschrampf You‘ll have fun with this one! Keep on reading ;) 4y
Scochrane26 Just wait—it gets more interesting. I don‘t think nick is supposed to be very likeable. He definitely makes mistakes. 4y
olivia.ferz @Heideschrampf @Scochrane26 That's what everyone keeps telling me😅. I'll definitely stick with it as I don't have a habit of DNF-ing books however boring they might be. Maybe this one would surprise me? 4y

The Woman in Black is my first novel from the horror genre. So I'm doubtful on how to give a review of this. The story is about a young solicitor Arthur Kipps who has to travel to a rural village in England to sort out legal papers of a dead client in her middle-of-nowhere house where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman. Unheeded warnings, strange sightings and sounds, hauntings, you get the drill.

olivia.ferz Now this is a traditional gothic story set in the Edwardian era, written in 1983. So the language of the story does reflect the time period. But I felt like the author rambles on too much. The story isn't what you call scary. Was it creepy? Sure. Was I spooked out? Sure. But I wasn't terrified or kept awake in the dark thinking if the woman in black is out to get me. 4y
olivia.ferz Though the book was a bit slow for me, Susan Hill does spin a beautifully sad and atmospheric ghost story. I loved the tragic backstory of the ghost which was so perfectly fitted to the story. I felt so sad that she had to go through all that pain and suffering while she was alive that I could understand the reason for her hauntings and killings. The ending of the book was even more violently tragic and heartbreaking. Overall,it was a good book.

Opinions please!! I'm starting the Narnia series from tomorrow for the first time. I noticed that the actual order of books are different from the published order. So which order would you guys recommend to read them in?

TobeyTheScavengerMonk As a lifelong Narnian, I say 100% publishing order. Start with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. 4y
olivia.ferz @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Is there any specific reason? I was doing a little online search and apparently the order in which the books are to be read is a very debated topic. Majority supported the published order, while some said the chronological order was less confusing and more logical. 4y
See All 10 Comments
vlwelser They are all such separate stories. You might be fine just reading them in any order. I hated The Last Battle. Save that for the end. 4y
xicanti I‘ve always gone with chronological, but that‘s just because it‘s how my parents read the books to me way back when. Honestly, I don‘t think it makes a huge difference. With chronological, you‘ll get a few, “hey, I know about that!” moments throughout TLTW&TW. With publication, you‘ll get to fill in some gaps in the backstory when you hit TMN. 4y
Lcsmcat I think it is (slightly) advantageous to read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe first. But they are delightful in any order. 4y
olivia.ferz @vlwelser Thanks! Will do! 😃 4y
olivia.ferz @xicanti I think I'll read them in the published order. I'd like a few surprises. 4y
olivia.ferz @Lcsmcat Yep. I'll be reading them in the published order. So I guess that come first. 4y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Wardrobe -> Prince Caspian -> Dawn Treader (❤️) -> Silver Chair all tell one continuous story that builds. Horse & His Boy was published next and takes place at the same time as Wardrobe, but I think going from Wardrobe straight to Caspian works better from a character perspective. The Magician‘s Nephew is a prequel that I think works better when you know the world. And The Last Battle is, well, the last battle. 4y

May #bookspin

Rating 2/5

I have no idea what went on in this book. It was like Ahern just starting writing and went where the story took her - to the land of boredom.

Lyrebird is about a woman named Laura hidden away in the wild mountains of Ireland, discovered by a documentary crew who want to capture her story and showcase it to the world.
(Contd in comments)

olivia.ferz She is portrayed as having the ability to mimic any sound on Earth which is described as magical and all of its synonyms in the dictionary. Really. It was 250 pages of just reading how magical her mimicry was. I just wanted to scream, "We get it! Now give us a story!" It was in the last 100 pages of the book that Ahern finally decides it's time to bring in some story-telling and tries to save the book by barraging us with last minute details. 4y
olivia.ferz The main character of the story Laura was so annoying. A 26 year old acting like a naive fragile kid is not very appealing. Also the love triangle between Laura and two of the film crew was just cringy. On second thought, all the characters were just plain and annoying with no depth into them. I didn't get to know their feelings, their dreams, their inhibitions. They felt very flat, one dimensional. 4y
olivia.ferz Cecilia Ahern has this ability of writing stories with a touch of magic and warmth. I've read 4 of her previous novels which were just perfect for a cozy read along with a cup of coffee for the cheesy romantic in us. But Lyrebird just misses the mark. 4y

Dark, atmospheric, mesmerising, captivating. Everything I hoped it would be. The Hazel Wood is a dark inverted twisted kind of fairytale story that opens up your imagination and takes you to the dark world of not-so-happily-ever-afters. Welcome to the world of doomed princesses, violent hands and where bad luck isn't necessarily as abstract as we think.

olivia.ferz I loved the story-telling style and the characters Alice and Finch. I did have a few questions unanswered but hopefully the second part 'The Night Country' will answer them. The book gives off a very moody, mysterious feel from the start implying not everything is as it seems. 4y

Rating - 4/5 @TheAromaofBooks April #bookspin

If you're looking for an easy breezy hilarious rom-com book to fill you with warmth, this is for you. The book is very funny filled with adorable instances of social awkwardness and utter cluelessness of Don in his wife-finding project. I found him quite irritating at first but I couldn't help but fall in love with the character and all his subtle and not-so-subtle quirks and all his innocent antics.

olivia.ferz Simsion has done a good job in writing this book which is beautifully tied together with drama, sarcasm and hilarity. I loved the way Simsion has written an unconventional love story with all the traditional makings of a love story and with the most traditional of all morals - 'You don't have to change yourself for the one who who truly loves you.' 4y

@TheAromaofBooks February #bookspin review

Trigger alert : Mentions rape, assault
.
'The summer that never was' is a pretty straightforward police procedural/crime book. I wouldn't classify it as a thriller because there wasn't really much element of surprise.
(Continued in the comment section)

olivia.ferz The story is about the investigation of 2 murders. One that takes place in the present tense and one that takes place in the past. It has our protagonist Inspector Banks simultaneously lending his expertise to both the investigations. 4y
olivia.ferz The story writing is very clean and engaging. The characters are well written and I was very well hooked into the book by the first 50 pages. But I was disappointed a little because the story was not what the blurb implied and I had been expecting something different. Also I felt as though the author chose the easy way out with the ending and kind of rushed through it. I could guess the ending halfway through the book. 4y

Mehso-so

Bestseller is filled with sarcastic jokes but it's not laugh out loud funny. I found Akshay quite cynical sometimes. He definitely has a way of getting under one's skin. I would've appreciated the book more had the author brought in more Indian themes. The cover design of the book had a very interesting concept which became more clear when I read the book. On the whole it was a good light read.

Crazeedi I loved this movie!! 5y
LauraBeth My boss introduced me to Julie‘s blog in 2002 and it was the first time I‘d ever even heard the word “blog”. 😀 5y
Sharpeipup I preferred the book & so I hope you find it soon! 5y
olivia.ferz @Crazeedi Me too!! 🙌 5y
olivia.ferz @LauraBeth 😂😂 I want to read the blog too! 5y
suzisteffen I liked the book better, but great actors in this movie, and Meryl Streep was fantastic. 5y
TheHeartlandBookFairy The movie was fantastic! 5y
Pricel101 @Crazeedi @naj @amyg love how Meryl/Julia would say “BON APPETIT!” Such joy! 👩‍🍳📚 5y
Naj @Pricel101 Yes! Meryl Streep did such a great job as Julia. It was just like watching one of Julia's old videos. I remember binge watching all of them when I first saw the movie. 5y
Crazeedi @Pricel101 I love that! 5y
bookaholic1 I didn't know either. Watched it last week and loved it 5y
Maggie_Reads One of my favorite movies. Julia Child‘s autobiography My Life In France is a great read and is more detailed about that time in her life. 5y
olivia.ferz @suzisteffen I loved her too and also Amy Adams. 5y
olivia.ferz @Pricel101 After watching the movie, I kept saying it too quite randomly... my mom must've thought I was crazy! 😂 But I adored the way she said it and couldn't help imitating her. 5y
olivia.ferz @Maggie_Reads Adding that to my TBR! Thanks! 😁 5y

I agree with @LazyDays . I joined Litsy last March and I'm so thankful for this community.
Books and reading mean so much to me. It's my escape from reality and sometimes a push into reality. It gives me a place to be lost in.

Congratulations @SamanthaMarie on your litfluence!!!
My favourite number is 2 because it's the only even prime number and I've always liked its uniqueness. I'm being a math geek over here🙈😂 I probably learned this fact long back in class 3 or 4 but it kind of stuck to my head. 😁

RadicalReader @olivia.ferz love when you have random facts stuck in your head useful when watching Jeopardy or my always favorite Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader whenever I‘d watch that show I‘m sitting there thinking a Fifth Grader from what dimension?! 5y
SamanthaMarie Thank you for entering!! I love that reason hahaha! Generating the winner today!! 5y
