From the author of the bestselling Adultery ... A haunting coming-of-age story set in World War II Quebec and a contemporary portrait of a man still searching for answers ... In England to see his daughter, Susan, who is gravely ill, James Hillyer, a retired professor of Victorian literature, encounters by chance a man he once knew as a boy. Gabriel Fontaine, a rich and attractive American he met one summer holiday during the war, is a mercurial figure, badly crippled by polio. As an adolescent, James was both attracted to and repelled by Gabriel's cocksure attitude and charm. He also fell hopelessly in love with Odette, a French-Canadian girl from the village, only to find himself in competition with the careless Gabriel. Now, at this random meeting over six decades later - as he struggles with the terrible possibility that he could outlive his own daughter - James is asked by Gabriel to accompany him on a final, unthinkable journey. At last, James begins to see that all beginnings and endings are inexorably linked. 'a compact, spare masterpiece ... October has the haunting beauty of a chamber piece, played with the softest of touches, every note perfect' Edmonton Journal 'October is a gently persuasive novel, solidly grounded in human observation, propelled by character, imbued with wisdom' Montreal Gazette 'wonderfully subtle ... inexpressibly precious' the Globe and Mail

#October midweek wrap up
@TheAromaofBooks #BookSpinBingo

10 Oct #1 - Looking Glass Sound 4 🌟
Haven't read a book this fast in a while! Magic, murder & betrayal; what more could I ask for.

5 Oct #16 Audio - Night of the Mannequins 3 🌟
Up there in the weird, chaotic & unreliable narrator category.

2 Oct #17 Audio - Court of Sugar & Spice 2 🌟
This had so much potential!!!!! Nutcracker retelling but the copious amount of sex, destroyed it.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 13mo

My husband is actually off for 4 days in a row (unheard of) this Thanksgiving weekend. So I'm going to try and get some reading in for the #OutstandingOctober #Readathon over the next week.

📚 Finish The Starless Sea
📚 Start a new book (yet to be determined)
📚 Try to get back into The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
📚 Read as much as possible

@Andrew65 - Thanks for hosting 🙂

Andrew65 Great to have you with us, good luck 😊👍 4y

#October #BookSpinBingo Update @TheAromaofBooks

14 - Living Dead in Dallas (1 Oct) - 3 ⭐
3 - Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (5 Oct) - 3.5 ⭐
9 - The Lights Over London (6 Oct) - 4 ⭐ #BookSpin

On a roll so far! Hope it stays that way. My #bujo bingo board looks atrocious. I love how this bingo tracker I made turned out. Notes in comments & on GR.

CloakNQuill 14 - 2nd in series. Sookie didn't bother me as much this time but Bil continues to infuriate me with his possessiveness. Multiple conflicts which I quite enjoyed but two of the three fall behind until the last couple of chapters. I got this feeling that Godric was used only to reiterate that vampires are not monsters. Decent guilty pleasure read. 4y
CloakNQuill 3 - The prose was beautiful! JBG is a psychopath. I felt that the tick metaphor was the perfect way to describe his character. The issues I have are due to the fact that I studied 18th century Western European Lit for 2 years. Setting is 1738 to 1767. Significant events pertaining to proletarians rights haven't occurred yet. Philosophical ideas of societal changes have been expressed but not implemented yet. So certain things don't add up for me. (edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Awesome progress!! 4y

It was a fun reading month (can it always be October?)!
The #scarathlon gave me lots of excuses to indulge in lots of horror, including lots of graphic novels.
I meant to get to more of my TBR but considering my world is still in flux (and had to watch horror movies), I did ok.
13 books
2 book signings
1 lease signing
1 vet visit
1 cat calendar photo session
2 blog tour posts
Countless arguments with my middle schooler
75 pieces Halloween candy

Read less than I thought in October, but I was really busy and suffering from D deficiency makes me tired at all times. Several really great reads, in fact only a few not that good. Jane Casey rocks! Also, great Swedish authors! Plus, the true stories were fabulous. Can‘t complain - my taste is books is the best ever 😂😂😂

My October #wrapup
16 books read this month and most of them were fantastic!
Will be having a break from the Kay Scarpetta series though as they were rubbish 😂
9 books from series, I think that might be a monthly record👍🏻 #october #octoberreads

Here‘s my #OctoberWrapUp; I had such fun with all my reads this month, plus I did so much horror movie watching...my favorite month for it! 🎥
I did several book blog tours (This Cruel Design, An Assassin‘s Guide to Love & Treason, plus Wicked Reads), and loaded up on the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, both on TV and with the graphic novels. Also, I‘m on my 2nd read for the month for my #HorrorPostalBookClub!
And I‘m on my 100th Book Of the Year!

So I didn't quite read all the books that I set out to read this October, but I did okay. With insomnia and seasonal changes, it's been hard for me to focus on books in any form. Hopefully, my sleep will improve and I can finish the rest of my spooky reads in November.

My #octoberwrapup didn't add up to as many as I originally thought, but it's still double than my average. I'm looking forward to more in the Twisted Tale series.

Whimsical.Curiosity Oh I love it!! And good job finishing so many!! 6y

Not my best month. I couldn‘t find an ARC of redeeming value. But I had several five star books. November will be better.

Andrew65 Still a great month 👏 6y

AutumnRLS Going to attempt to read Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt, Have Mercy On Us All by Fred Vargas, and Stiff by Mary Roach. Might also try to fit in the second Flavia de Luce mystery. It's going to be a busy month for me though. So we shall see! Also, Hex might be too scary. I'm a bit of a mess when it comes to truly scary stuff. 6y
BookwormAHN Love the wreath 🖤 6y
TheBookKeepers Nice TBR! @AutumnRLS ! I‘ve thought about reading Stiff so many times but keep putting it off lol! Let me know what You think about that one!! 6y

These are some of the books I would love to get to this month. I still need to finish 5 September books that I left bedside. Plus four ARCs. Once again, lofty goals. #october2018 #goals #crazy

@Tove_Reads @EadieB Trying to sort out some start dates for the Buddy Reads. For the Buddy Reads you are taking part in do these start dates work?
Thursday‘s Child : Start Wednesday 10th October
The Lilac Bus : Start Wednesday 17th October
A Ladder to the Sky : Sunday 21st October
Revelation : Tuesday 30th October
@Crewgurl @JacqMac @rubyslippersreads @Reviewsbylola copied you in for a Maeve Binchy but welcome to join any. 😊All welcome!

EadieB @Andrew65 Dates are good for me for Maeve Binchey and Sansom reads. 6y
Andrew65 @TheWordJar @MellieAntoinete Have tagged you in, in case you want to join us for the Buddy Read of The Lilac Bus (of course you are welcome to join us for any others too). 6y
Tove_Reads I have Thursday now for 14 days. I own The Lilac Bus, A Ladder I will have by then (if people will hand in their copies to the library on time). I will pick up Revelation on Saturday, so I will have it until November 3. I might have to start reading it a day or two earlier. 6y
See All 30 Comments
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads We can start Revelation a couple of days earlier (28th) , what date does Thursday‘s Child have to go back to the library ? We can be flexible on John Boyne if you don‘t have it from the library yet. @EadieB (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads I just borrowed Thursday as an ebook, so I have it for 14 days. I guess we‘ll read it in about 4 days? The first one should hand in Boyne latest October 11, so it should work out just fine! But, people can‘t be trusted... 28th for Sansom works! 6y
Tove_Reads I‘m sure there are Boyne fans out there who‘d like to join us! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads In that case I would suggest Starting Thursday‘s Child on Saturday 6th October to ensure we finish it on time for you. I‘m sure there will be some people who would want to join us for John Boyne. 6y
Tove_Reads 👍🏽 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads 28th is good for me for Revelation. I would read Ladder to the Sky but it‘s not published until 13th of November in the US. I requested it from Netgalley. If I get a copy I will let you know. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Wasn‘t aware it wasn‘t published in the US yet. @Tove_Reads 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Come on Net Galley! 😬 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB wow, I thought it was everywhere by now. ☹️ 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB It was published in August in the U.K. @Tove_Reads (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I could order one from UK but might not get it in time. I check some other books sites. Maybe one will have a copy in US. How much is 8.00 lbs (don‘t have the UK symbol on my keyboard) in US dollars? 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB £.00 is $10.42. Current conversion rate Q9.00 = $1.30. I still remember the days when Q9.00 = $2.40. 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @Andrew65 Should we switch the dates for Boyne and Sansom? 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘m okay with a swap. @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 If a swap works than they will give me more time to get a copy. 6y
Andrew65 A discussion like this each month will be useful to sort out dates and books. @Tove_Reads @EadieB 👍 (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I ordered one from Alibris and it‘s coming from New York and I should receive it in 9 days. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB 🍾🍾😊👍💃 6y
Crewgurl Sounds good. 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘ll keep Lilac Bus in mind for sure! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I got a copy of John Boyne‘s book from NetGalley and it‘s in my kindle already to go! I canceled the other copy that I ordered from Alibris. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That was quick, so shall we stick with that in the middle of the month and Revelation on 28th? @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 yes the middle of the month is good for 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 I‘ll let you know when I get my copy! 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads ok great! 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Thanks👍 Still to pick up my copy from the library too. @EadieB 6y
