(thru ch49) My goodness, so much is happening! D'A is finally a musketeer!! I am cracking up about how they are literally on a battlefield and any fighting is totally just background noise. These guys are obnoxious, but also actually do seem to be good at their job - I really enjoyed the way they held off the other soldiers just so they could have a private lunch 😂 There have been a lot of fun shenanigans, but I really am curious as to what is ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) going to happen with Milady. For real though, I'm confused about how she survived a hanging?? Did she escape before it actually happened??

Are the rest of you sticking with it, or have you bailed out of this one? Some of these chapters have been way too long, especially combined with ol' Udolpho 😂

(thru ch39) - I haven't enjoyed the last week of chapters as much, since the guys' way of earning money mostly seems to be manipulating the women in their lives 🙄D'Artagnan really is showing is youth and inexperience here as well. At least he found Kitty a new job 😑 I've missed the slapstick from the earlier section of the book, but we'll see what happens if they ever actually head off on their tour of duty. I AM intrigued by some of the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) mystery and court intrigue. Like @ChaoticMissAdventures pointed out in her review, this book was written about 200 years after the time in which is set, which makes it historical fiction when it was published - this is kind of like us reading a book about American rebels during the Revolution and even with my footnotes, I am sure that if you actually LIVED in France when you read this, you would get a lot more of the subtle humor and ⬇ 2w

ChaoticMissAdventures Totally agree, they honestly seem like jerks. The opening couple of chapters were so funny and filled with literature references and all of that seems to be gone. It is interesting that their job is musketeer but they never seem to be doing their job. 2w

"My compliments to Satan!"

Well. This was a wild ride. I have never really thought about classics being historical fiction of their time. This book was written about 200 years after some of the true events told. I think this is classified as an adventure book, honestly I found it more of a long winded book about soldiers run amuck. I didn't particularly like anyone and found most all of the characters immature.
#randomclassic @TheAromaofBooks

ChaoticMissAdventures I did finish, and found the book easy enough to read once I got into the cadence of it all. I do wish the humor of the first couple of chapters had continued, it seemed to be replaced with misogyny and ridiculousness. I am glad I read it. 3.5/5 2w

Bailedbailed

#RandomClassics I listened to more than half of this, which is the longest I‘ve ever given a book before bailing. At first I thought it was humorous. But then I realized there wasn‘t much difference between Richelieu, Milady, and the rest of the “villains” and D‘Artagnon, the three and all of the Musketeers. D‘Artagnon and his compatriots didn‘t pay for rent, meals, or inns. They seduced women by fair play or by foul, whether the women (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 were married or below them in their status. There is nothing heroic or noble about these characters. And I didn‘t want to hear anymore about them. Buh-bye. 2w

(thru ch30) Okay, I've not been doing a great job hosting this one 😂 But I actually am really enjoying it! These guys are so ridiculous and over-the-top. And D'Artagnan finally gets to be a real musketeer... if he can find the money to get all his gear. Of course he's too busy chasing the mysterious stranger all over town haha And what do you think has happened to poor Constance??

Are you all enjoying this one or no?

Once we get to where the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) days of the week don't match the chapter numbers anymore, I start to get confused 😆 So here is November's reading schedule. We are going to use the first weekend and the last weekend as catch-up days, especially with Thanksgiving (US) at the end of the month. There are 67 chapters, so we'll wrap up in early December!! 3w
CatLass007 I‘m enjoying this one quite a lot. I‘ve been trying to come up with a word that summarizes our Musketeers. They seem to be such scoundrels. They don‘t pay their bills. They‘re always tricking someone into doing something else. Scoundrels. But very funny scoundrels. 3w

Librarybelle Thanks for the schedule! Still catching up but am still liking it! 3w
curiouserandcurioser @TheAromaofBooks im loving this, as well! 3w
CatLass007 I‘m not quite sure how it happened but as of 11/03/2024, I‘ve finished through chapter 32, which would put me only one day ahead of the group. Except, @TheAromaofBooks, your book has 67 chapters and my audiobook has only 56 chapters. All my chapters have named titles. So actually, I may only think I‘m a day ahead. I could be behind. Because using different translations can really screw things up. So, while I am still confused, I am enjoying it. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @CatLass007 - Sometimes audiobooks divide things differently, or even have an abridged edition instead of the full version. In my book, chapter 32 is titled “A Procureur's Dinner“ - does that match up with anything at your end? 3w
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Yes, that‘s what my chapter 32 is called. I go out of my way to avoid abridged books. In fact, if there‘s more than one translation of a particular book, as there is with the current one, I always choose the one that is longer (if there are only two), or if there‘s more than two, I choose the longest. Abridged books and Astroturf should be outlawed! 3w

(thru ch21) How is it going, friends? I know a few of us are a little behind 😂 So without getting into too many spoilers, I have to say that the action has been quite exciting over the last couple of chapters!! (Although I felt terrible for the horses! 😢) I didn't realize there was going to be so much political intrigue, but on the whole I feel like Dumas keeps it light enough to stay entertaining.

I am planning to stick with the chapter-a-day⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) plan through October, but would you all like to take the first weekend of November as catch-up days, and then pick up with chapter 32 on November 4? Let me know what you think!!

ChaoticMissAdventures I am trying to catch up with 2 chapters a day which is doable for me, but goodness he really likes his words huh? Did he get paid by the letter in writing this? 😂. After watching King James and George it is interesting to see the Duke here running around France wooing the ladies 1mo
BarkingMadRead I‘m loving this, it‘s still very Don Quixote-like without the insanity 🤣 1mo
Librarybelle Sounds good to me! I‘m very behind still and hope to read more this week. 1mo
nanuska_153 @ChaoticMissAdventures yes, Dumas actually got paid by word/line 😅 It's kind of like when series were on tv rather than streaming and seasons where 20 episodes, some of them where nothing happened: Halloween episode, Christmas episode, etc Now with streaming it seems like there's only 8 episodes and all of them important.Dickens is particularly obvious cause he was paid by installments and there are chapters that have a Thanksgiving episode's vibe 1mo
CatLass007 I‘m enjoying this much more than Don Quixote, something on which I quickly bailed. It was just too depressing. So much of this current book is tongue in cheek. Not depressing at all. Audible lists this as the first book in “D‘Artagnon: The Musketeers Cycle.” Depending on how this one winds up, I probably would enjoy listening to more in the series or other books by Dumas. 1mo

We're 14 chapters in and I'm only just now checking to see how everyone is doing 😂 The first couple of chapters were a bit of a struggle for me, but I am starting to enjoy it now. This book is a lot more snarky than I was anticipating. And even though D'Artagnan is a hot-headed mess, I'm finding him entertaining. How is it going for all of you? Have any of you decided to bail? Any favorite characters/scenes?

Librarybelle I‘m behind! Not because of the book but because of life. I‘m liking it so far, but admittedly I‘m not very far into the book. 1mo

CatLass007 I‘m really enjoying this. I‘ve been listening to an Audible free selection but it‘s going to stop being free toward the end of the month so I went ahead and bought it. I‘m loving the snark. I‘m not sure why it would be compared to Don Quixote because that was incredibly depressing and I definitely bailed. This isn‘t depressing at all (yet). 1mo
Jadams89 I agree, the first couple of chapters were strange, but now I‘m enjoying it! 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I loved the name dropping of other books (Don Quixote and Gulliver's Travel) this is my first Alexander Dumas and I am really enjoying the humor and the political commentary..I am a couple of chapters behind already but I am enjoying it. 1mo

Getting ready to start this #RandomClassic !! I'm curious to know what translations everyone is reading? @janeycanuck shared an article yesterday with some fantastic information on the various English choices - https://welovetranslations.com/2022/07/13/whats-the-best-translation-of-the-thre... - and reading it made me purchase a different copy! I really wanted to read the two volume hardcovers that I have had on my shelf for so ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont\'d) long, but there isn\'t any copyright/translation info listed and I\'m afraid they are abridged - and now that I have a definitely-not-abridged copy to compare the sheer volume of pages, I\'m pretty sure my hardcovers don\'t have the full story!! So far I\'ve only read one page, and I\'m delighted to see a shoutout to another #RandomClassic hero, our old friend Don Quixote 😂 Looking forward to reading with you all!! 2mo

CatLass007 I‘m listening to the one that‘s free on Audible. It doesn‘t say in the listing who is the translator. Six buddy reads this month and most of them are free. I guess I‘m a glutton for punishment. And I‘m already behind… 2mo
Jadams89 I have the Bantam Classic edition translated by Lowell Bair — it says it‘s complete and unabridged 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures Goodness Paper Mill Press doesn't want to give any credit to their translator! I had to Google a bit but it looks like Richard Pevear translated this pretty copy 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly The edition I got from the library was translated by Eleanor Hoffman. 2mo
julieclair I‘m reading on Serial Reader, and have no idea what edition I‘m reading! 🤷‍♀️ 2mo

Hey friends!! We'll be starting this #RandomClassic on Tuesday!! I am here to take a poll: do we want to stick with one chapter a day, which means it will take us a little over two months to read this; or go with two chapters a day and finish in early November? I'm slightly inclined to stick with the single chapter because I have a lot of buddy reads for October, but I also understand if we don't want it to drag out so long haha ⬇

CatLass007 I don‘t think I‘ll be participating in the Christy buddy read. 2mo
janeycanuck Before I end up down a rabbit hole on this... Is there any particular translation that is considered to be the standard or particularly good? 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck - I haven\'t done any translation research, so let me know if you find out anything interesting 😂 I know there was a lot of variation with Don Quixote. 2mo
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks I‘m settling on Richard Pevear. This website was helpful in deciding! https://welovetranslations.com/2022/07/13/whats-the-best-translation-of-the-thre... 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck - Oooo thank you!!! That is SO interesting! I have a two-volume hardcover edition that has no copyright date but I am guessing printed c1950. I just clicked through and compared the first line to all the ones that this article provided and still couldn\'t find a match!!! My concern is that it\'s abridged since so many translations are. Having a little readathon day to see if I can finish The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. I have around 400 pages left. 🤞

marleed My son brought me back a Strand mug and a tote this January as he travels to work the lead up to NYE at Times Square every year. I sent him to Strand (it never would have crossed his mind), and he loved it there! 6mo

4 ⭐️s
Certainly different than any film adaptation I‘ve ever seen. I quite enjoyed it though. It‘s not as much of a fast paced adventure but more of a comedy/drama with humor and intrigue as its strong points. 17th century France certainly had a different idea of what “honorable” looked like. 😅 Lady de Winter had a much larger role and is definitely not a sympathetic character. The Musketeers each have their unique personalities. ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I usually prefer Aramis in the films but Athos is such a bamf in the book. I‘m looking forward to reading more of this series and MUCH more of Dumas in general. 1y
Deblovestoread I've started watching the BBC series and am living it. I really need to read the book one day. 1y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Deblovestoread There‘s a BBC series?!? I‘ll have to check it out! ❤️😱❤️ 1y

Athos trolling the prison guards had me laughing so hard!

I never knew Athos, Porthos, and Aramis weren‘t really their names but more like nicknames. I‘m loving this book so much. ❤️

Pro tip: if you are making a #14books14weeks2023 list, you shouldn‘t put 5 classics on it if you actually would like a chance to complete the challenge. You definitely shouldn‘t include this one…I‘ve been making my way through this all month and am SO ready to be done with it!

Wow I‘m so glad to be done with this book… it was for a book club and although it is a classic and the story and writing have their merits, I just really did not enjoy reading it. I felt like the story was way too long and had us shooting off in random directions the whole time. I will say in the end everything was addressed and closed up which is why it‘s getting a so so and not a pan.

This is an amusingly silly caper. The plot is pretty meandering and twisty - you can tell it was initially written as a series - which is a bit hard to follow at times. It's quite the thriller at the end. And D'Artagnan is an endearingly hot-headed idiot.

Dilara ”D‘Artagnan is an endearingly hot-headed idiot.” This is so true! 2y
arlenefinnigan @Dilara I really like how half the book is D'Artagnan going "aaaaargh what did I do that for I'm such a dick" 2y
Ruthiella What bugged me about this book is that Milady (who is kinda awesome and herself a victim) is punished for her perfidy and Richelieu gets a “well played dude, see you the next time we cross swords”. 2y
arlenefinnigan @Ruthiella yeah the only 'good' woman is stupid and dead. 2y

#OnThisDay in 2002, celebrations began in France to honour what would have been the 200th birthday of author Alexandre Dumas. The celebrations would continue throughout the year, culminating in Dumas' ashes being interred in the Pantheon to lie in honour with other great authors of France. Then President Jacques Chirac acknowledged the racism that had kept the celebrated author from his rightful place of rest. #HistoryGetsLIT

This book was such great fun. So many hilarious, raucous scenes with the Musketeers. And Milady - what a villain! She was terrifying. The final 200 pages I couldn‘t put down and read straight through. Onto War and Peace!

I truly enjoyed the marvelous work of the narrator Guy Mott who gave each character a distinct voice and even managed to have a singing voice of a woman and did that well. I‘ve never seen any of the movies so the story was unknown to me. I enjoyed it and see why we are still reading it and retelling it after hundreds of years.

BookDadGirlDad The 1993 movie, although a slight departure from the book, is excellent. The actors chosen for each character are brilliant choices. Sheen, Sutherland, O'Donnell, and Platt each bring their respective characters to life. 3y

This was a little tricky to get into at first; the story took a while to get going, which is understandable given its source, but about two thirds in I found it unputdownable and I really enjoyed the story. I would recommend as a good read, but be prepared to persist with the initial slow start.
