Alice Isn't Dead
Alice Isn't Dead: A Novel | Joseph Fink
From the New York Times bestselling co-author of It Devours! and Welcome to Night Vale comes a fast-paced thriller about a truck driver searching across America for the wife she had long assumed to be dead. This is not a story. Its a road trip. Keisha Lewis lived a quiet life with her wife, Alice, until the day that Alice disappeared. After months of searching, presuming she was dead, Keisha held a funeral, mourned, and gradually tried to get on with her life. But that was before Keisha started to see her wife, again and again, in the background of news reports from all over America. Alice isnt dead, and she is showing up at every major tragedy and accident in the country. Following a line of clues, Keisha takes a job with a trucking company, Bay and Creek Transportation, and begins searching for Alice. She eventually stumbles on an otherworldly conflict being waged in the quiet corners of our nations highway systemuncovering a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman. Why did Alice disappear? What does she have to do with this secret war between inhuman killers? Why did the chicken cross the road? These questions, and many more will be answered in Alice Isnt Dead.

Characters felt realistic. I loved especially the beginning of the book where a main character was grieving for loosing her close one. That was relatable.

The beginning was scarier than the rest of the book and that might have also made the beginning better.

This felt a bit repetitive: the same pattern happened several times. The last part was a bit luch.

This was a weird, creepy, wild ride of a book. Keisha is a truck driver on a mission to find her missing wife Alice, who she is sure isn't dead. On her travels, she begins to uncover a mysterious conspiracy in the forgotten parts of America and must contend with evils she's never imagined

I gave it a good ole second chance, but again, I couldn‘t get very far. I was initially drawn in by the cover. Then the synopsis got me: truck driver trying to find her wife, presumed dead, being followed by a serial killer. But then it‘s basically instantly weird with no build up and then it coasts. I didn‘t really care to see if it would get exciting.

I‘m not sure why I didn‘t connect very well with Alice Isn‘t Dead. Maybe it jumped around in time too much, although that‘s not something that usually bothers me. It felt a little choppy in this instance, and at times it was a bit hard to follow. I liked the premise, I think the execution just wasn‘t for me.

When her girlfriend discovers Alice isn‘t dead (because she sees her on the news), Keisha starts looking for her, by driving through the US as a truck driver. So far so good. But then things start getting supernatural (first a bit but then a lot) and I lost interest. #podcast

pigeonsandcrows Is the book basically a rehashing of the same content as the podcast? 5y

Took awhile and I had to renew the loan a few times, but I finally finished it.

It wasn't too different from the podcast. It had a few small changes here and there. I was hoping it would add more to the lore than it did. The audiobook is read by the same person who does the podcast, which made me happy.
Overall, it's just as good as the podcast. I enjoyed it.

Clare-Dragonfly Thanks for the review. I was hesitant on this book after not liking the Night Vale books. I thought this would be more different from the podcast. 5y
Patchshank @Clare-Dragonfly if you're ever in the mood to relisten to the podcast, maybe give the book a listen instead. They're similar enough, with a few differences to keep it interesting I guess. 5y

I ADORE Welcome to Nightvale, so I was sure this would be up my alley and I was right. Keisha‘s wife, Alice, is presumed dead but Keisha sees her popping up in the background on the news all over the country. She becomes a long-distance truck driver to seek out her wife and the truth...which is so SO much stranger and more complicated than she was prepared for. I love Fink‘s wit, dark humor, and realistic characters. (Image from tumblr)

Patchshank I loved the podcast. I haven't read the book yet, but I plan to. I also want to read the two Night Vale novels. 6y

AshleyHoss820 @Patchshank I haven‘t listened to the podcast yet but I‘ve heard it is different from the book! I‘ll have to check it out and see! I own the first Welcome to Nightvale novel but I‘m scared to read it because I want to love it so bad! 😂 After reading this, though, I know I will. Might be time to break it out! 😄 6y

Ok, I finished this and I have lots of thoughts that I will get to eventually. Or not. Whatever. My question is...is the podcast different enough to be worth listening to? I'm a passionate WTNV fan and I need another podcast to listen to....especially a creepy one. I love creepy podcasts.

I just devoured this in 24 hours. It‘s a quick read but not light. Fink won me over with “Welcome to Nightvale” and continues to be a thoughtful, creative, fantastical storyteller. He combines social commentary with affirmation without losing plot or momentum. I loved this book.

Book chosen in one of my book clubs. It is about good, bad and neutral aliens? Really? Such a bad story, it didn't make any sense to me and that ending😱terrible! I don't know what else to say1.5/2⭐️

mabell I don‘t think I‘ve ever seen you pan anything! Must have been very bad indeed! 😆 6y
Gissy @mabell It was bad. I didn't know what was going on here. I couldn't go to the interview with the author but even what I heard the author apparently said was silly to me: three groups of aliens representing the good/bad and neutral people in the world!?what? At the beginning it seemed was going to be interesting, well grossly interesting because how these "things" killed people was so graphic and terrible. Then the story didn't make any sense. 6y
mabell Yikes. Definitely sounds like something that wouldn‘t interest me at all! 6y

Gissy @IndyHannaJones Maybe😳It started so good but then I was lost. But I have to confess, this is not my genre, not now, I could say. But I'm always open and receptive to try again. However, this book is already in a new home were it will be appreciated more than in my home☺️ 6y
IndyHannaJones @Gissy well, I just ask because their storytelling style is VERY unique and if you're not used to it then it can seem very, very bizarre. 6y
Easytiger @Gissy This is a literal retelling of the podcast so it was kind of created for people who are already fans of the podcast I will agree it was pretty graphic, though I loved it. Im a day one listener 5y
Gissy @Easytiger Someone told me something similar. Maybe I was not ready but I loved the beginning of the book. I'm always open to try again something similar to see how it goes. But I have to confess that I donated the book. 😕Recommend me something similar for a newbie like me. 5y

Yeah, ok, I'm addicted to this book already. I'm a good quarter or so through it and it's quirky, relatable, with a bit of thriller-mystery-horror vibe going on.

Keisha and Alice‘s relationship was the best-written part of this story. The overall horror plot just doesn‘t come across on the page as strongly as it does on the podcast, unfortunately. On to my daily yoga now!

If you like the weirdness and general batshit storylines from Welcome to the Night Vale, then you will probably dig this book by the creator of said craziness. Keisha's wife goes missing, presumed dead, and so Keisha travels the highways of America as a trucker, searching for answers, coming up against monsters, crimes, government conspiracies, haunted service stations and an age old darkness...
