panI really struggled with this book. It had way too many POVs for me. I would have preferred the book to have been limited to Holly & Marinus. The rest is just background noise. The book did get better, but it had dragged so much in so many spots that I just wanted to be done. I rated it 2 stars. (this is my last book for January- I am updated!)

pickI read Slade House a couple of months ago and immediately moved The Bone Clocks up my tbr priority list. I love Mitchell‘s style and his prose is just lovely. This book is dense and cleverly structured with time skips and multiple POVs, but all comes together beautifully. It was an absolute pleasure to lose myself in this audiobook* over the last few days, and I won‘t soon forget these characters—especially Holly Sykes.

pickI read this twice, back to back. I really admire what David Mitchell does; the way his books are so well thought out, and how things tie together. This novel got a lot better in my head as I reread it. It was far more emotional, I understood what the author was attempting to do…my appreciation for it grew and grew.
At first I wasn‘t sure how many more of Mitchell‘s books I‘d read; now I must admit I‘m itching to touch some others.
Well, things have been weird for me with reading lately…. I finished The Bone Clocks, and that same day turned back to the first page and started rereading it. Thing is, this is such a long book, and I‘ve already been reading it for a while and now I‘m right back at the middle, but I am loving it still.
There‘s a LOT of other stuff I want to get to though, hot books everyone is chatting about, so after this I have to chill on David Mitchell.
For most of my life, the world shrank and technology progressed; this was the natural order of things. Few of us clocked on that “the natural order of things” is entirely man-made, and that a world that kept expanding as technology regressed was not only possible but waiting in the wings.
K I‘m gonna go ahead and compare this book to Marlon James‘ “Black Leopard, Red Wolf.” Yes, it‘s good. No it‘s not fantastic. The only reason I never left a review on here for James‘ fantasy epic is because I felt I didn‘t fully grasp some storyline elements and it could do with a reread. I‘m feeling the same about “The Bone Clocks.” I have the kind of neurotic trait where I‘ll reread a book if I didn‘t feel like I fully got it…. No idea why.
A drone circled above us. It would be armed. I thought of its operator, picturing a crewcut nineteen-year-old called Ryan at a base in Dallas, sucking an ice-cold Frappuccino through a straw. He could open fire on the clinic, kill everyone in and near it, and never smell the cooked meat.
I consider airing my theory that our culture‘s coping strategy towards death is to bury it under consumerism and Samsara, that the Riverside Villas of the world are screens that enable this self-deception, and that the elderly ARE guilty: guilty of proving to us that our willful myopia about death is exactly that.
pickProbably the fastest I‘ve ever read a book of this length. Compared to my usual speed, I basically inhaled it. Yay, summer and free time and most of all, David Mitchell! Still one of my favorites.
So good. What an adventure. 💙

How am I *still* not finished with this book! The conflict resolution ended on page 548. I'm now on page 570 of 624, what is left to happen? What more could you have to say David Mitchell? How many more inconsequential characters POVs can there be? This book is driving me crazy.
How do you feel about amnesia in characters? Or characters that don't know what they truly are until halfway through a book? I find it annoying most of the time. Especially when everything is spelled out so clearly it's hard to believe they've been in denial their entire life, going out of their way not to believe the signs.
I've learned a new word today!

Do not be fooled by the goofy face, this boy is so cranky and clingy today thanks to some new teeth. I'm hoping he'll decide to sleep soon so I can get back to reading the tagged book. I devoured the first hundred pages the other evening, and have had little chance to return. So far, I'm loving it!

If you like sci-fi, you will enjoy The Bone Clocks. This book supplies the mythology that transforms Mitchell's other books into a larger "meta-novel." Of the six sections, the first, second, and fifth are utterly compelling, while the other three aren't quite as good.
pan640 pages...I‘ve no problem with 640 pages...but this book...it just took me FOREVER to read. I couldn‘t get into it. I just kept thinking it was going to get better but it never did for me and it took me 4 weeks to read. I am so glad I finally finished it!!

This book is amazing , the twists & turns throw you off the scent of the story but you are caught in a web making you turn each page till that moment when it hits you & you are in love with this story. I have given many people this book over the years & everyone falls in love with it at a different point

pickThis one took a while to get going, but I kept reading. Really, I couldn't stop. This author grabbed my brain and wouldn't let go. I'm glad I finished the book, and I am definitely going to look for more of his work. I hate to say anything that happened, but if you like literary fiction and have a soft spot for psychics and timeshifting, find this book!

I reached the halfway point of this 600+ page novel and I'm still not sure what the hell is going on! I can't make myself bail though. Something keeps dragging me forward. This makes me think that David Mitchell is some sort of magician.
For now, I'm avoiding him and knitting in front of the fire.
pickI finished this yesterday. It was taking me forever, so I ended up increasing my efforts with a hard copy, CDs for the car and a Playaway for audio walks. Fantastic storytelling. Time period spans 1984- 2043. Six different worlds filled with a legion of characters. Thankfully, one HollySykes, ties everything together. Intelligent fantasy. Battles between good and evil. Not quite certain what I read, but I am glad that I did.

My new audio walk “read”!
pickAdored this!! I‘ve read a few David Mitchell books now and generally I‘ve disliked them but felt there was something i was ~nearly~ appreciating that made it worth keeping trying, and I‘m glad I soldiered on to read this one cause it was really perfect. So subtle, complex and original but didn‘t feel up itself even though it easily could have done. Amazing characters and worldbuilding. Threw the genre playbook out the window, which I appreciate.
Next up! I remember this one coming out when I was in school and thinking the cover was just the most beautiful thing I‘ve ever seen. A little disappointed that I‘m listening to it and not owning and touching that gorgeous cover but I try not to mind that kind of thing! Maybe if it‘s good I‘ll buy it one day
Late summer read. It takes some time to wrap your head around it, and to understand how the different narratives intertwine, but it is worth the time in the end.
