Amazon.com: Get Big Fast | Robert Spector
31 posts | 1 to read
In Amazon.com Jeff Bezos built something the world had never seen. He created the most recognized brand name on the Internet, became for a time one of the richest men in the world, and was crowned "the king of cyber-commerce." Yet for all the media exposure, the inside story of Amazon.com has never really been told. In this revealing, unauthorized account, Robert Spector, journalist and best-selling author, gives us this up-to-date, fast-paced, behind-the-scenes story of the company's creation and rise, its tumultuous present, and its uncertain future.

I saw this ad on Facebook today. Normally, I would be so excited to buy ebooks from Amazon but now, I‘m rethinking buying any digital books. It makes me not want to hoard my ebooks or audiobooks anymore since I‘m only purchasing a license to read them. I like digital books though. I don‘t have to worry about finding space for them or deciding what to do with them after reading them. All I have to do is just delete them off of my phone.

dabbe If it makes you feel a wee bit better, I have had my digital Kindle books for years, and not one of them has disappeared or been taken away. If a new edition comes out, it will update to that, but I love that--especially with nonfiction. 6d

Here‘s more from that post I saw today from a Facebook page I follow called Dog And A Book talking about Amazon‘s new change. I don‘t want to pirate books and I don‘t want to hurt authors. I downloaded my ebooks to my computer because I was worried about losing them. I thought I was doing the right thing saving them to my computer and just keeping them on my computer because if I lose my ebooks then I won‘t have any way to get them back.

Deblovestoread I think the problem is we weren't told we were only buying a license. I believe I bought a copy of a book as it was published, not just a right to read said book, which Amazon claims it has the right to change its content. I won't be buying any more kindle books and will be carefully considering future ebook purchases if i buy a new reader. 6d

I follow a page on Facebook called Dog And A Book and she posted about Amazon‘s new change where Amazon isn‘t going to allow people to download books to their computer anymore and here‘s a few things she said about it. I wish I would‘ve seen her post about it before I downloaded my ebooks to my computer. I‘m still trying to process the fact that for years since owning a Kindle that I‘ve never actually owned my ebooks.

dabbe If you can writer this FB back, I would say something like, “Then if I only own the right to read it, why does it COST MORE THAN AN ACTUAL BOOK? I can buy a physical copy of a book, xerox the pages and then distribute them or post on Scribd for a LOT LESS MONEY than it takes to purchase the right to read an e-book. Who's responsible for the high e-book costs? The author or Amazon? Whomever he/she/it is, they are HORRID.“ #mytwocents 6d

I just finished adding the Kindle files into a folder on my computer I created just for books and it didn‘t take me very long to do at all because I just selected all the files at once and moved them to the books folder. Now that they‘re on my computer, I could move them to another e-reader or just keep them on my computer. I would recommend downloading your ebooks from Amazon while you can because on Feb 26, you won‘t be able to.

Bookwormjillk Did they take up a lot of space? 1w
kelli7990 @Bookwormjillk No. I still have a lot of storage space on my computer. 1w
dabbe Can you read them? I downloaded a few, too, and they are all AZW3 files with DRM protection. I can't open them from my computer to read them, nor can I with the Calibre app. I can't convert the AZW3 to PDF either--not even with the plug-in DEDRM, which is no longer supported. Are you able to read these books from your computer, and if, so, how? 1w
kelli7990 @dabbe I haven‘t tried using Calibre yet since it was 4:00 in the morning when I finished downloading my books and I hadn‘t gone to bed yet. I downloaded the Kindle for PC app. I opened one of the files and it opened in the Kindle for PC app to read so I guess if I wanted to read on my computer, I could. 1w
dabbe @kelli7990 That's an excellent idea. I'll look at my Kindle for Mac app. 🤗 1w

I just finished downloading all of my Kindle ebooks to my computer. I had 2 ebooks that I wasn‘t able to download for some reason. They probably deleted them from their website and I deleted some that I wasn‘t going to reread. I have 3,454 books. I started downloading all of them on Wednesday and I just finished downloading all of them on Saturday at 4 AM. I‘m glad that‘s done. All I have to do next is put them in a folder on my computer.

I‘m not buying ebooks or audiobooks from Amazon anymore. I‘ll buy ebooks or audiobooks somewhere else or directly from an author‘s website. They don‘t want us to own our ebooks and I don‘t think they want us to even own our audiobooks so I‘ll either borrow books from Libby or Kindle Unlimited.

Libby is a good alternative. I used Thrift Books before. I haven‘t tried the other ones mentioned here but they sound good. After finding out that we don‘t actually own our ebooks or audiobooks and that we‘re just purchasing a license to access the content, using Libby or Kindle Unlimited is starting to sound better to me. If I want to own something then I‘ll buy it.

Tonight, I downloaded more of my ebooks from Amazon. Earlier from 7-9 PM, I worked on this and stopped on page 74. I had to update my software on my computer but then tonight from 11:30 PM-2 AM, I downloaded some more and I stopped on page 100 out of 142 pages. I‘m stopping tonight and I‘ll start again tomorrow.

I‘ve made a lot of progress on downloading more of my ebooks to my computer. I downloaded books for 5 hours and 30 minutes tonight and I‘m still not done yet. I have 3,529 books. I made it to page 58 out of 142 pages of books on my Amazon account. I stopped on page 58. I have until Feb 26 to download my ebooks. I‘m stopping tonight and starting again tomorrow. My hand is tired.

Tonight, I started downloading my Kindle books to my computer. I have 3,000+ ebooks on my Kindle. I downloaded 500 books. There‘s only a few days left until Amazon turns into a paid library where they can edit books and remove books whenever they want to. I feel better already that I‘m taking control over my ebooks so the books will actually belong to me and when they‘re all on my computer, they can‘t mess with them or take them away.

I‘ve decided that I‘m going to download my ebooks because on February 26, Amazon is becoming a paid library. If we don‘t download our ebooks to our computers then Amazon can take them away from us. I don‘t want to lose my books. They‘re mine. I paid for them. I have 3,000+ ebooks on my Kindle. I was just talking to my mom about this and she told me that I can just save them as files to my computer and that I don‘t even need a USB drive.

I saw this post in a Facebook group I‘m in about the change from Amazon happening on February 26. This is the second part of it.

CatLass007 I didn‘t know anything about this change! Will it also affect Audible? 2w
kelli7990 @CatLass007 I don‘t know. I haven‘t decided if I want to deal with downloading my ebooks to a USB drive or not. I don‘t think I have a USB drive. 2w
CatLass007 This is just another way for Amazon to rip off their customers. 2w
kelli7990 @CatLass007 I was just talking to my mom about this and she told me that I don‘t have to download my books to a USB drive and that all I have to do is just download them and save them as files to my computer. It sounds like they want to become a paid library but I don‘t understand why. I already use Libby and I pay for Kindle Unlimited. Why would I want to pay to rent ebooks from them? That‘s not right. 2w
CatLass007 No, it‘s absolutely not right. I‘ve actually lost a couple of audiobooks from Audible in the past. But there‘s a way to download audiobooks from the Amazon site to get those books back. 2w

Wow. I didn‘t know Amazon did that. I‘m not switching to another e-reader because I‘m happy with what I have but this makes me look at them differently so basically, none of us have ever owned our Kindle books. We‘ve only been buying a license to rent them this whole time. Is Amazon trying to become a paid library?

Ok. I get it now. Amazon wants us to only use their e-readers. Well, this doesn‘t affect me because I‘m not switching to another e-reader. I like my Kindle. I‘m happy with it. It works well for me. I don‘t see any reason why I should switch to something else.

Nebklvr They have also switched versions of books. So you may buy one version and end up with another. 2w
kelli7990 @Nebklvr Now that I think about it, I have noticed that with some ebooks I‘ve bought from them in the past before where I bought a version with a certain cover and then next time I notice when I‘m going through my ebooks on my account that the covers have been updated. If they change the cover of the book, does that mean that they can also edit it if they don‘t like what the book says? I never thought about it before but that‘s scary. (edited) 2w
Nebklvr @kelli7990 I think it was a thing when people were complaining about Roald Dahl books where people were censoring his writings so I would say yes. 2w

What‘s highlighted in purple is what‘s standing out to me in the article I just shared a link to. We don‘t actually own our digital content that we pay for. We‘re just buying a license to rent it. I‘ve heard that it‘s always been that way. Why didn‘t anyone tell me this? I just found out about this and I‘m trying to process it.

Texreader I love my ebooks but I hate this, if we actually pay for it. 2w

I just found out about this. I‘ve never used this feature. So basically after Feb 26, you won‘t actually own your Kindle books. We‘re just going to be buying a license to rent our books and I guess that means if they remove the ebook from their website then you lose the ebook. I wonder if they‘ll start doing this on Audible too.

kelli7990 Apparently if you want to actually own your Kindle books then you need to download them to your computer and transfer them over to a USB drive only if you want to actually own them and then put them on another e-reader. If you don‘t do that then you can only read those books on your Kindle. I plan to keep the books on my Kindle. I don‘t plan to put them on another e-reader. 2w

I didn‘t know about this. Personally, I prefer human narrators over listening to a robot read a book. Human narrators have inflection in their voices and robots don‘t.

Apparently people have been buying, quickly reading, then returning ebooks on Amazon, literally costing authors money due to a loophole. I know Littens would not by ok with this! There‘s a change.org position opposing the policy, if you want to sign: https://www.change.org/p/change-amazon-return-policies-for-completed-e-books-pro...

Laughterhp I didn‘t even know you could return ebooks… 3y
EKonrad I cannot fathom why people would think this is ok! 😩 Thanks for posting the link to the petition. 3y
Hooked_on_books @EKonrad Apparently there‘s been a sudden burst of it after people posted TikTok videos on how to do this. I‘m sure they think they‘re just bilking Amazon and not thinking about the impact on the authors. At least, hopefully. 3y
See All 15 Comments
Hooked_on_books @Laughterhp Right?!? Me either! 3y
GingerAntics What is wrong with people?! 3y
TrishB 😱 I remember when I first got a kindle someone showed me an illegal way to download books onto it. They couldn‘t understand why I wouldn‘t do it as I was saying what about the authors!! 3y
mjdowens WHAT? I did not even know that was even know that was possible. That is stealing to me. Unbelievable 🤬 3y
janeycanuck I‘ve heard people do this with Audible, too. If it‘s electronic, they should be able to determine how much of the book you‘ve consumed and if it‘s more than like… 25% or something, it‘s no longer eligible for return. What an awful situation for that author. 3y
Amandajoy Why would people do this? People are jerks. 3y
Bookzombie This is shitty. I didn‘t know this was possible, but I also never immediately read books I buy on my Kindle. 3y
MicheleinPhilly WTF??? As if I needed more evidence that people suck. 3y
MicheleinPhilly @Laughterhp @Hooked_on_books I‘ve returned a few but that was immediately after buying them and then realizing that I already owned it in hard copy. But that was like minutes after I purchased it. I can‘t even imagine reading it and then returning it. Go to the fucking library. 3y
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly PREACH 👏 👏 3y
vivastory I think that part of the mindset behind this that people have is that all art/entertainment should be free or a flat monthly free. Also as others in the thread are pointing out, they are not harming amazon. I haven't looked at the exact numbers on how much of amazon's profits are derived from books, but I'm guessing that it is not the majority. They will happily let people continue doing this if it keeps them on their site. People are only harming 3y
vivastory the indie authors using amazon as a distributor platform. Thanks for linking the petition. (edited) 3y

https://www.google.com/amp/observer.com/2018/07/amazon-prime-day-boycott-europea... — for anybody who doesn‘t know about this, Amazon workers are going on strike this week. A reminder that Goodreads is also owned by Amazon and I personally won‘t be logging into it for the next week or so.

So this news came today. I‘m pretty sure I‘m not going to keep using Prime with this increase. All you have to do is save enough items in your cart to equal $35 and shipping is free anyway. Or is it $25? I forget. Anyone else a little bothered by this?

You guys, look what I spotted in NYC today - An IRL amazon bookstore! What do you think of Amazon opening retail stores? Pro/Con? I feel weird about it, but not sure how to articulate it. 🤔

wellreadredhead I don‘t know anything about the Amazon stores. Do they price match the website? 🤔 7y
aeeklund To me, shopping in the store feels like browsing a webpage. Not what I go to a bookstore for. 7y
Kitta @collegecatlady I‘m guessing so, I didn‘t have time to go in this time but I‘ll check it out soon. I don‘t know if they could afford to do that! 7y
