Lost Roses | Martha Hall Kelly
The runaway bestseller Lilac Girls introduced the world to the real-life heroine Caroline Ferriday. Now, a generation earlier, this sweeping new novel featuring Caroline's mother, Eliza, follows three equally indomitable women from St. Petersburg to Paris under the shadow of World War I. It is 1914 and the world has been on the brink of war so many times, many New Yorkers treat the subject with only passing interest. Eliza Ferriday is thrilled to be traveling to St. Petersburg with Sofya Streshnayva, a cousin of the Romanovs. The two met years ago one summer in Paris and became close confidantes. Now Eliza embarks on the trip of a lifetime, home with Sofya to see the splendors of Russia: the church with the interior covered in jeweled mosaics, the Rembrandts at the Tsar's Winter Palace, the famous ballet. But when Austria declares war on Serbia and Russia's Imperial dynasty begins to fall, Eliza escapes back to America, while Sofya and her family flee to their estate outside the city. In need of domestic help, they hire the local fortuneteller's daughter, Varinka, unknowingly bringing intense danger into their home. On the other side of the Atlantic, Eliza is doing her part to help the White Russian families find safety as they escape the revolution. But when Sofya's letters suddenly stop coming she fears the worst for her best friend. From the turbulent streets of St. Petersburg and aristocratic estates of the countryside to the avenues of Paris and the society of fallen Russian migrs there to the mansions of Long Island, the lives of Eliza, Sofya, and Varinka will intersect in profound ways, taking readers on a breathtaking ride through a momentous time in history.

I liked the historical setting in this story and I was content with how the journeys resolved for the three main characters, But my journey in this book couldn‘t find a way out of so-so status. I found the dialogue corney, and the cliff-hanging pivots from one POV to another made me want to skip pages to stay with the current storyline.

I loved Lilac Girls and was excited to read a WWI novel by the same author. I enjoyed the story, particularly the parts in Russia, but the varying perspectives were awkwardly done. This was fine otherwise but not really memorable. The photo is from a recent sunset boat ride and felt it appropriate for an immigrant story. #aty2019

BarbaraBB Such a great picture! Don‘t know the book. 3mo
Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB Thanks! It was such a beautiful evening and sunset! I would recommend the author‘s book Lilac Girls which is a WWII novel about women in Ravensbruck concentration camp. I wonder if the author was pushed by her publisher, due to that book‘s success, to follow it up with this “prequel”? The books have very little in common other than a main character in this one is the mother of a main character in the other. 3mo
BarbaraBB Thanks! I‘ll check out Lilac Girls first! 3mo

In May, I launched a new seasonal book club ‘Seasons By The Book‘, with a dear friend. Our first book, ‘Lilac Girls‘ by Martha Hall Kelly, was such an incredible read - emotional, disturbing, haunting, & well researched! I loved it! So, I‘m looking forward to reading the prequel pictured above.

Just as with Lilac Girls, i read 50 pages, or Part 1 in this case, and did not find myself compelled to continue. I am generally turned off by ultra-privileged characters in times of great poverty, and this book features at least one, maybe two (I‘m not sure about Sofya). The action in Russia had me interested, but the book‘s focus on Eliza was such a letdown.

Having not read Lilac Girls yet, I wasn't sure how I was going to like this pre-quel to it. However, I absolutely loved it. I enjoyed the focus on the women's lives as they were affected throughout history by the unrest and the war. Showing how the situation was for those in Europe and abroad in America, gave a nice overall view of the circumstances at the time.

Excellent story about 4 women in WW1, told from alternating views. I had to pay attention at the beginning to see whose story i was in or i got confused, but once i learned their voices i was good. This is the prequel to Lilac Girls, which is still on my tbr shelf 🙊 read this in one day bc it was good..and it was due back at the library yesterday 🙉

I liked much of the story in Lost Roses and it was compelling - the violence of the Russian Revolution, how the emigres were treated like vermin abroad even though they would have been catered to as rich, white women, the comparative time period in the US, etc.

However, the actual construction of the book left me cold. The author uses a rotating cast of three narrators, ordinarily fine, but in this case each narrative has a different pace...

balletbookworm ...broken up by unnecessary cliff-hangers and the other narratives. Two chapters from Sofya‘s POV that should flow directly from one to the other are broken up by a different narrator at what feels like a different time with a cheap cliff-hanger thrown in for good measure; this was more of a problem at the beginning of the book than at the end when the three POV characters‘ timelines had converged. 7mo
balletbookworm Some of the plotting was revealed to be overly convoluted in the climax of the plot.
Read for the BN Book Club.

Really good story! I love that some of it is based on real people that did really good things. I didn't know much about WWI before this book, nor did I know what a big part Russia played in it. The book is written from four perspectives. So you are able to feel for the wealthy Russians now running for their lives and for the starved citizens that suffered so they could live in complete comfort. 🌹

All of the women in this book are strong and resilient. They each have very different personalities but still go through heartbreaking and unspeakable things. I liked the mother daughter relationships portrayed in this book as well. These women help others and put others before themselves which is a trait I can relate to because I do the same things. I like how Eliza and Sofya try to be there for each other.

5 ☆ Inspired by true events this is a can‘t miss for all Lilac Girls fans!
This centers on Eliza Ferriday (Caroline‘s mother), Sofya (the Romanovs cousin) + peasant Varinka‘s own female points of view. Filled with deep love of family, tragedy + desperate survival it takes us to Russia, Paris, NYC around the WWl era.
I enjoy investing my time in this series it‘s a good one. Excited for book 3 about Caroline‘s great-grandmother during the Civil War.

This was one of my #MostAnticipated2019Reads - but I frankly struggled finishing it! I found the pacing to be slow, the characters to be not only unlikable but also unconvincing in their motivations and the plot to gloss over what seemed like the more interesting parts! I am not sure if this is a case of going in with too high of hopes, but I very nearly bailed on this #WWI novel! Maybe someone else will find a connection to these characters!
