The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop
The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop: A Memoir, a History | Lewis Buzbee
In The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, Buzbee, a former bookseller and sales representative, celebrates the unique experience of the bookstore - the smell and touch of books, the joy of getting lost in the deep canyons of shelves, and the silent community of readers. He shares his passion for books, which began with ordering through the Weekly Reader in grade school. Woven throughout is a fascinating historical account of the bookseller trade - from the great Alexandria library with an estimated one million papyrus scrolls to Sylvia Beach's famous Paris bookstore, Shakespeare & Co., that led to the extraordinary effort to publish and sell James Joyce's Ulysses. Rich with anecdotes, The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop is the perfect choice for those who relish the enduring pleasures of spending an afternoon finding just the right book.

This was a great listen. Read by the author, it explores the history of his own book lust, his time working in and frequenting various bookshops in the Bay Area. He packs in a ton of history about book selling, book binding, early writing to publishing, libraries, renowned sellers and the future of reading and books themselves. I particularly enjoyed that with later releases he includes (2 in this edition) updates on the state of the trade. 4⭐️

I loved this book so much! I want to order 500 copies of it and give it to everyone who is confused by my passion for reading. It also gave me some warm fuzzy feelings when he describes the bookstores he‘s worked in. I can‘t wait to go visit my favorite bookstores & libraries when it‘s safe!! Definitely worth a read for all book lusters and bibliophiles 🤓💗📚

While perusing my next read from my TBR box (I‘m ashamed to say just how full this box is 😬) I picked this book up that I bought 3 years ago at a library book sale. I read 7 pages while I sat on the floor and I think it‘s just what I need right now: Essays that celebrate the unique experience of the bookstore. Sign me up!! I‘m missing the experience of waundering around my library and favorite bookstore, but this is only temporary 💖 #StayStrong

I think if you loved Susan Orlean‘s, The Library Book, you‘ll love this too. Published in 2006, it‘s a tad dated on the current bookstore scene, but nevertheless, it‘s a delightful tour of the contemporary retail bookstore along w/ a historical tour of books, publishing, and the selling of books. As we shelter in place, and I can‘t go visit my favorite bookstores, I thoroughly enjoyed Buzbee‘s reminiscing about bookstores/sellers, & book buyers.

Aims42 I‘ve had this on my TBR stack for a couple years, sounds like I should move it up 👍🏻 5y
Erynecki @Aims42 It had been on my TBR pile for a long time! Sometimes you just have to find the right time to circle back to books you‘ve been meaning to read... 5y

Hey readers! This is a quick shout-out to local bookstores and other small businesses who are being affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. Many bookshops stay viable by offering more than just books - regular author visits, book clubs, book fairs and other events. Without these events things are going to be tight for a lot of these family-owned stores. If you can, support your local indies during this time! Check out bookstorelink.com...

PNWBookseller85 To find a store near you. Many of these bookstores have online websites you can order from as well! Thank you! Stepping off the soap box now! 5y

It's about one degree under the reading outside limit, but there's a half decent breeze. Not a whole lot of good places to read outside around here anyway, especially since I can't really sit on the ground.

A pleasant read - a mix of memoir and the history of books and bookstores. The author used to work at bookstores and as a publisher's rep.

One of the best parts about working in a bookshop is being on the frontlines politically. The store in Seattle where I work, the Secret Garden Bookshop, is putting our ARCs up for sale and donating the proceeds to RAICES Family Reunification and Bond Fund because we believe that families belong together. If you‘re in the area, stop by and say hello and help us make a difference.

Elisa It‘s an absolutely wonderful cause! However ARCs cannot be sold, only traded. Maybe you could ask people to give a charitable donation and as a thank you they can pick an ARC? You would achieve the same goal without breaking the rules... this is a really hot topic right now. (edited) 6y
PNWBookseller85 We‘re not profiting from the ARCs. Donating all the proceeds. We‘ve done it for years, usually donate to a literacy organization. It‘s within the rules. 😊@Elisa (edited) 6y

#TBRtemptation post 2! I love this cover, don't you? And I love getting various peoples' viewpoints from different parts of the publishing industry, in this case a bookseller & sales rep. LB goes through his experiences in the book world starting in childhood--he regularly ordered from The Weekly Reader--and interweaves his favorite parts of bookish history, from the Library of Alexandria to Paris' Shakespeare & Co. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
