The Friend Zone
The Friend Zone | Abby Jimenez
Fall in love with this "deliciously hot, sweet" (L.J. Shen, USA Today bestselling author) romantic comedy perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Helen Hoang. Kristen Petersen doesn't do drama, will fight to the death for her friends, and has no room in her life for guys who just don't get her. She's also keeping a big secret: facing a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for her to have children. Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen -- especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He's funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. The only catch: Josh wants a big family someday. Kristen knows he'd be better off with someone else, but as their attraction grows, it's harder and harder to keep him at arm's length. The Friend Zone will have you laughing one moment and grabbing for tissues the next as it tackles the realities of infertility and loss with wit, heart, and a lot of sass.

Friends to lovers, my second favorite romance trope. I thought this was cute and sweet. The relationship between Kristen and Josh made me want to root for them. Much sadder than I anticipated, but a happy , if predictable ending. #romantsy

Like most romance novels this is pretty predictable, the same story of we can't be together because of fill in the blank. I still really enjoyed it, there were some unexpected events at end that added to the drama.

What should have been a nice romance whilst tackling the painful topic of infertility was spoiled by tone deaf handling of Kirsten‘s medical condition and a frankly baffling second half of the book. Plus side found a beautiful spot to finish this on a bright bitterly cold Maine day

FlowerFairy What a lovely reading spot! 1mo

Solid friends to lovers romance. Some@pretty dramatic moments. I love humor more than drama.

Warning, this not the light hearted romp the title or cover might otherwise indicate. It starts out as such, but quickly morphs into a tortuous will they/won‘t they love story. Right or wrong and without giving too much away, I found myself getting angry with Kristen. I was frustrated with Josh too, but on a different level. There was one twist I didn‘t see coming, and another that I did- the latter possibly being controversial to some readers.

Reggie Have you seen the goodreads review section of this book? It‘s a minefield of infertility. 1mo

As an infertile myrtle, I was really excited to see this issue in a romance. But...I just didn‘t like the characters. Or the way the fertility stuff was handled. Or the big twist. Or the ending. It went by too quickly and too slowly. Banter was decent, but it was just whatever, I guess. Glad I only wasted three hours on it. And that I can return it to the library and never think about it again. 👍🏼👍🏼1/2

5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez was a fun and sad book to read. I loved the cast of characters. I enjoyed the alternating character chapters of Josh and Kristen. Also this book is not only romance but it deals with mother daughter relationships, friendships, relationships and more. An entertaining read from beginning to end.

Lovesbooks87 Can't wait for the Sloan's book to come out! 2mo
mandi1082 @Lovesbooks87 me too!!! 2mo
Reggie I really liked this one. I had never cried so hard on one page only to laugh on the next and the bawl again on the page right after that one. Can‘t wait for the next book either! (edited) 2mo

I was 2/3 the way through this enjoyable cat and mouse story and that pivotal thing happened - the thing that alters the trajectory of the book, when all of a sudden the entire ending came rolling out of one of those cavernous corners in my twisty mind. Yep, I read this one. Liked it then and again now! When the physical book is not in my hot little hands, this often happens. So, maybe I‘ll enjoy it for a third time in another couple years!

marleed Haha. So I just went to Goodreads to see when this was published. June 2019! Obviously, I had not read it before. Now I‘m racking my brain trying to think of a book similar enough that this ending fully unfolded for me! 3mo

Not everyone's infertility journey is universal and I'm glad Abby made it a point to mention that in the author note at the end.

I was seeking a quick rom-com when I picked up The Friend Zone, but I fell in love with the characters and their personalities. Whit and sarcasm don't always translate well in books but this one was done flawflessly and had me feeling all the emojis. This one will stick with me awhile.

MrBook Nice review! 4mo
MaggieCarr Thanks! It's often hard to get all I want to say down to a qualifying character count while still being worthwhile to others seeing to read good books. 4mo

So disappointed with this. It‘s on so many lists this summer but it really doesn‘t live up to the billing. All the guys deserved better than this and the not like other girls heroine is a pain. Spoiler-y comments below to explain myself more.

Verity Killing the best friend‘s fiancé off just so she realises they should be together?! A baby binder of ways they can still have children?! A shotgun wedding with the grieving bestie turning up?! And most egregiously: A MIRACLE PREGNANCY BECAUSE HE HAS SUPER SPERM TO RENDER THE WHOLE THING MOOT. The more I think about this the angrier I get 4mo
Verity I‘m still going: The hero is the best thing here - if a bit wet but running all the other girls down when thinking about the heroine?! The heroine telling the new Boyf his 🍆 is bigger than the old Boyf?! There‘s emotional infidelity verging on actual infidelity in a way that I found hard to reconcile with a character I‘m meant to like. Oh and the plug (maybe it was meant to be cute) for the author‘s cupcake business. Still angry. 4mo
Verity ^ ok so I‘ve spoiled the hell out of this! 4mo
LiteraryinLititz Yikes! Hard pass for me. Thanks for taking one for the team. 😋 4mo
Verity @LiteraryinLititz I‘m still not sure why I finished it. But the more I think about it afterwards the crazier I get about it! 4mo

Meh, I am not interested in any of these characters and the man and woman had an initial interaction that felt kinda sexist. #Romantsy

Kristen is a spunky 20 something who is the bridesmaid for her friend Sloan, who is waiting for her boyfriend to get out of the service so they can start their lives together. She is also fertility challenged. Josh is the hunky firefighter who is the best man for his friend, Brandon. He helps Kristen with her online business. He also wants lots of children. This was so good!!!! I‘ve never had a book gut me, make me cry, but then make me laugh👇🏼

Reggie through those tears on the very next page. I loved loved loved this book. Also, a little off topic but I wish in some high school class they had a panel where a barren woman who is living her best life comes to talk to the class about how the ability to have children should not define a person. Let‘s stop putting that on girls and women, yeah? 5mo

3/5

I mostly enjoyed this book. The characters were good and the plot was fun, if much sadder than I would have expected from the description and cover.

There was some 'love cures all' stuff that bothered me a little, which I'll talk about in the comments to not spoil stuff. I enjoyed it, but it's not a book I would feel comfortable recommending to everyone.

sebrittainclark So a big part of the story is Kristen's infertility. As soon as I saw that, I knew this story would end with her pregnant. I understand that with her condition it's possible to get pregnant, but it just would have been really nice for the girl to get the guy and not have a miracle pregnancy afterward. It's a common thing in romance books, so I want shocked. I just really wanted something different. 5mo
sebrittainclark Kirsten also has OCD. And I had mixed feelings. On one hand, she describes it as a monster in her brain, which really rang true for me. On the other hand, when Josh is around 'the monster goes away'. Which is frustrating because no amount of love for my fiance has made my OCD go away. 5mo

This was such a pleasant surprise! I really was not expecting the emotional roller coaster. Yes, it‘s fun and sexy but it also has some heavier moments that I was not expecting in this kind of book. I immediately passed it on to a friend who proceeded to devour it and then rave. We both recommend it!

Lovesbooks87 I just finished this today too. I loved it. I also saw where she is writing a book about Sloan and it is coming out next year! 5mo

I loved this book. It is everything that I would want in a Romantic Comedy! I laughed, I got angry when the characters were being stupid, heartbroken, and pure joy for them. I absolutely can't wait to read what the author writes next! This was my 4th completed book in the #24b4monday readathon!

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I knew from the synopsis that I was going to enjoy reading this story what I didn‘t expect was for this fun rom-com to tackle some very real and very emotional topics. I truly appreciated how this weighty story still kept a light feel with smattering of humor, sarcasm, and emotional sensitivity sprinkled throughout. Time and again the Author surprised me with where the story went and my heart was entirely invested in the characters.

Wow! Be ready! The Friend Zone packs an emotional punch. Prepare yourself to laugh and cry your way through Kristen and Josh's journey to a happily-ever-after.
This story is intensely heart-aching yet full of humour too. The author knows how to wring out every drop of emotion from the protagonists. They are complex characters, made for each other but in time-honoured fashion, the journey for them to realise this is difficult for them to navigate.

Liked this Netgalley romance, hoping it might be the set up for a series. The main character deals with horrendous periods, fibroids and infertility. The reality of that experience made for a really involving read.

I really enjoyed this book, but the cover is a bit misleading. It says “fun and cute”, and while it was fun and cute (lots of banter and tension) there were also two serious things going on. One affected their relationship more than the other, but both made me cry.

Edit: The blurb does say you‘ll reach for tissues, my bad for being unprepared. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I heard about a new book coming out next year so was doing a little Amazon research on it...I had to laugh that it is clearly labeled as “Expected to arrive after Christmas” when it doesn‘t get released until next July 🤣 At least they make it clear?
