The Bookish Life of Nina Hill
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill | Abbi Waxman
Abbi Waxman is both irreverent and thoughtful.#1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin The author of Other Peoples Houses and The Garden of Small Beginnings delivers a quirky and charming novel chronicling the life of confirmed introvert Nina Hill as she does her best to fly under everyone's radar. Meet Nina Hill: A young woman supremely confident in her own...shell. The only child of a single mother, Nina has her life just as she wants it: a job in a bookstore, a kick-butt trivia team, a world-class planner and a cat named Phil. If she sometimes suspects there might be more to life than reading, she just shrugs and picks up a new book. When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews, Nina is horrified. They all live close by! They're allor mostly allexcited to meet her! She'll have to Speak. To. Strangers. It's a disaster! And as if that wasn't enough, Tom, her trivia nemesis, has turned out to be cute, funny, and deeply interested in getting to know her. Doesn't he realize what a terrible idea that is? Nina considers her options. 1. Completely change her name and appearance. (Too drastic, plus she likes her hair.) 2. Flee to a deserted island. (Hard pass, see: coffee). 3. Hide in a corner of her apartment and rock back and forth. (Already doing it.) It's time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell, but she isn't convinced real life could ever live up to fiction. It's going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.

Abbi Waxman is one of those authors where I‘ll read literally anything she writes. Small Beginnings and Other People‘s Houses are up there with some of my favorite books of all time so very excited to dig into this new one!

It‘s made particularly better that I‘m currently outside in the sunshine with my pup. Loving the last few days of summer, but very ready for fall!

Nina finds out she has family she never knew about. She tries to get out more and meet people. She has always been shy and feels much more comfortable with books.

I‘m coming off some very good books. Thus, my patience for all but 4+⭐️ books is just not there.

What a delightful novel! I had a real fun time getting to know Nina and her eclectic group of family and friends. Even better, the story is set in my hometown of Los Angeles and I really appreciated the sense of familiarity. I loved the sweet romance between Nina and Tom. I hope to read more by this author! ❤

This was cute! It's definitely a book for people who spend most of their nights reading or thinking about reading. I definitely related to Nina. The idea of working at an indie bookstore and being super organized/planner is very me. I'm just missing a long lost family and inheritance. I think the romance was cute but it needed more time and development. I loved their banter and I definitely sensed an attraction but it seemed a bit rushed through.

Thanks to starting this book, this is the first time in years that my TBR has dipped below 600.... I‘m so weirdly excited about it. Why does 599 seem so much more manageable?! August was a great reading month: 13 books finished with a couple being way back on said TBR — and every book is just better if you read on vacation.

This book is delightful. It‘s a light easy read that any bookish introvert could relate to in some way or another. Some times I just need to read a happy book or “up lit” as I‘ve heard it called. This fit the bill perfectly!

I have never related to a character like I related to Nina. Nina is an introvert book-loving woman, who plans everything ferociously leaving no room for anything extra in her life. The author has smartly given Nina challenges, which she completes with her own struggles and grows as a person at the end. The book gets too cute and even drags sometimes, but the chapters at the end made it totally worth it. A light breezy read to brighten your mood.

I have never related to a fictional character more in my life. Bookish, anxious and sarcastic Nina enjoys her quiet life working in a bookstore, trivia nights, being alone and routines. When the father she never knew dies she is suddenly thrown into chaos. Can she make the chaos fit into her perfectly scheduled life or will she have to learn to embrace chage? Bonus - book references, cats, planners, trivia and tons of highlighter worthy quotes. ❤

This was a very light and fun read. Nina is very relatable, and stones got plenty of drama without it getting too heavy. Overall a good time. The style was a tad too cutesy for me, but I can see why other people loved it. This is definitely a book meant for Littens!

KatieDid927 Totes cutesy and a little cheesetacular at times but still really fun. 1mo

3.5 ⭐ / 5. This was mostly fun and sweet but the writing style didn't always work for me and the storyline with Nina's boss annoyed me.
I didn't totally love it - I think it was maybe too whimsical or cutesy for me. But it was a nice distraction from real life this week.

This was a charming read, but a little underwhelming. All the characters are literate, clever, & talk just like Amy Sherman-Palladino characters. Reading about Nina navigating her charming new family, dealing with her charming romantic troubles, & fixing her charming employment problems was fun & relaxing, like spending the day at the Santa Monica Pier. I enjoyed reading & was always happy to pick it up, but I'm not sure it will stick with me.

I think Nina is the closest fictional character, that I have found, that feels like me. I tend to put my foot in my mouth, enjoy working surrounded by books, oddly sarcastic and full of odd facts. Her odd paternal family and substories were fun and they reminded me of Joe Fox's family in You've Got Mail. I enjoyed the romance between Tom and Nina but feel they rushed to bed quicker than needed based on how little then know each other.

CoffeeAndABook About Tom & Nina - that‘s exactly how I felt! I could feel their initial attraction to each other but everything after that felt rushed & detached at the same time. I wasn‘t feeling it at all. Apart from that, the book was bliss. 💫 1mo
