The Gifted School | Bruce Holsinger
65 posts | 49 read | 74 to read
Smart and juicy, a compulsively readable novel about a previously happy group of friends and parents that is nearly destroyed by their own competitiveness when an exclusive school for gifted children opens in the community. This deliciously sharp novel captures the relentless ambitions and fears that animate parents and their children in modern America, exploring the conflicts between achievement and potential, talent and privilege. Set in the fictional town of Crystal, Colorado, The Gifted School is a keenly entertaining novel that observes the drama within a community of friends and parents as good intentions and high ambitions collide in a pile-up with long-held secrets and lies. Seen through the lens of four families who've been a part of one another's lives since their kids were born over a decade ago, the story reveals not only the lengths that some adults are willing to go to get ahead, but the effect on the group's children, sibling relationships, marriages, and careers, as simmering resentments come to a boil and long-buried, explosive secrets surface and detonate. It's a humorous, keenly observed, timely take on ambitious parents, willful kids, and the pursuit of prestige, no matter the cost.

Bailedbailed

Had to bail on this one. Too many points of view and too few likeable characters. Also, Tessa's reckless behavior had me cringing. Anyway, time to read "Instacrush"! I'm in the mood for a good hockey romance story. The fact thst it takes place around Christmas? Bonus! ??❤?

We decorated for Christmas yesterday, but have so much more to do today. ?I was a bit apprehensive going in to this book, with the description and the length combination. I shouldn't have worried, because I found this "convulsively readable" just as the description states. The parents of gifted children are driven to extremes in the Colorado suburbs were their children are competing to attend a new school. The #audiobook was excellent as well.

janeycanuck I have one of those ceramic trees! But our cleaning lady knocked it a few years ago and shattered the base and I haven‘t been able to find a replacement 😢 2w
Chelsea.Poole @janeycanuck oh no! I do love these vintage trees...I wish I could say it has been in my family for years but I actually bought it at a thrift store a couple years ago for $2, lol. There are some broken lights but I just face that part to the back.😉 it doesn't have a back either, I didn't know it was supposed to? Hope you're able to find a replacement! 2w
janeycanuck @Chelsea.Poole I looked at the time and I could get a new base for about $150. Too rich for my blood. I should look again. But yeah, it sits on a base that has a lightbulb in it and it lights up! 2w

It took me a bit to get into this one, but once I did, I couldn‘t put it down. Holsinger tells a familiar tale of competition and greed with a bourgeois suburban backdrop. What grabs the reader is how he successfully juggles character development in a book with a lot of characters to juggle. It‘s a tale of morality and a serviceable reminder that intelligence comes in many forms.

Reviewsbylola With two kids in elementary, I could relate to this so hard. I hate the pressure we put on kids these days. 4w

I‘ve been gone a long time because, frankly, 2019 has sucked. Homeschooling is hard. My husband will leave next week for his 23rd business trip of the year. And, worst of all, I lost my father back in May, and my heart still aches for him every day. I‘m really behind in my Goodreads challenge for the year, but I‘m learning to love the reading time I get instead of lamenting the time I don‘t. My books will be here waiting. #litsyreturn

I‘ll always love a school drama, and this one didn‘t disappoint. The Gifted School is on the surface, easy, middle class social drama. At its heart though, this is a novel about the ugliness of human competitiveness, our willingness to hurt others when faced with our own limits, cruelty in the face of threat, self-preservation, and above all the curation of our external lives. This part of the novel was almost too real. I loved it.

I was so excited to read this book. Multiple families, drama, suburban school setting, I‘m in. But you don‘t really end up liking any of the characters. They‘re all evil and weird in their own ways. But it held my interest enough for me to finish it hence the so-so rating. Thanks #botm for another mediocre pick.

BookBelle84 The fact that the author managed to make all the characters so different and still all of them flawed and unlikeable is what I liked about the book.😁 2mo

Nary a likable character in the bunch (except maybe poor trampled Tessa), this is still an amusing diversion of a book. No high literature, but it‘s fun candy. I read it fairly quickly for 400+ pages.

It‘s totally believable. Overachieving parents go to great lengths to get their bratty, mostly average, progeny in the new super Gifted school. The twist at the end was a different one than I thought and a fun addition!

As a single female with absolutely no desire to have kids, I can't really relate to this sordid tale about a fancy new school for gifted children and the lengths these competitive, wealthy parents will go to to ensure their kid makes the cut (thank goodness). But it's chock-full of juicy drama, compulsive writing, and bad behavior, so I basically just grabbed some popcorn and let myself be entertained 😂 #BOTM

8little_paws @MicheleinPhilly a lot of the who's who in Chicago send their kids there but there's a surprising amount of non wealthy scholarship kids there too. One of the parents had I believe 10 different luxury cars. All with vanity plates "toy 1" "toy 2" and so on. And a lot of families send multiple children there and ultimately end up giving the school $1M+ all in. 3mo
8little_paws @MicheleinPhilly and in Chicago you are going to spend at least $15k+ for any non subsidized preschool + after school care anyways. City life is a fortune. 3mo

"Insidious, these false versions of superiority and ease we project onto other families: how often they blind us to the surer comforts of our own" (302).⠀

I absolutely adored Bruce Holsinger's The Gifted School, a gut-wrenching and powerful novel about the impact of exclusivity and competition on a Colorado community. At the center of the book are the families of four women: (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Rose, husband Gareth, and daughter Emma Q; Samantha, husband Kev, and daughter Emma Z (Emma Q's best friend); Lauren and her kids Tessa and Xavier; and Azra, her twins Charlie and Aidan, her ex-husband Beck, and his new family Sophia and baby Roy. The women have supported each other through tragedies and illnesses and deaths, and their children are friendly, if not all friends. ⬇️ 4mo
UnabridgedPod Their tight bond begins to break, however, when a new public school for the top 10% dominates the thoughts of the community. The book rotates through multiple perspectives--Rose, Emma Z, Tessa (through her vlog--the book includes some multi-genre elements throughout), Xavier, and Beck--as the children go through the multi-step admissions process, beginning with a rigorous standardized test. ⬇️ 4mo
UnabridgedPod Holsinger's writing is phenomenal, and the observations throughout are keen and thought provoking (and sometimes uncomfortable in what they reveal in the reader, at least in my experience!). He explores notions of white privilege, particularly in the periodic inclusion of the voice of Ch'ayña, the housekeeper for Rose and Samantha and grandmother of Atik, another candidate for the school; intelligence and talent; exclusivity; ⬇️ 4mo
UnabridgedPod ambition; competition; nature vs. nurture; and so many of the issues that consume my thoughts as a parent and a teacher. The novel reminded me at times of Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies, though with less camp and less murder. It's a captivating page turner of a novel that offers both plot and idealism. 4mo

ALL ABOARD THE HOT MESS EXPRESS! I know I‘ve used the word “delicious” in several reviews this summer but this one also falls firmly in that camp. Rich people behaving badly stories are firmly in my wheelhouse and this did not disappoint. I was reading this as satire but sadly I know just how true to life these parents are. As a child of the 80s/90s from a working class background and a time when 👇🏼

MicheleinPhilly a helicopter was strictly a type of aircraft and not a parenting style, I am oh so grateful to have missed the “parenting as competition” movement. Everyone is despicable but I‘m here for the schadenfreude! 4⭐️ 4mo

There are some books where I fall in love with the characters and how each unfolds as a story continues. Other times, it‘s the story that has precedence and the characters provide the perspectives for presented ideas. This, for me, was the latter. If ‘lively bookclub discussable‘ was a genre, this would make that list.

This was way more of a page-turner than it should have been for what the story was. There wasn't that much actually happening, yet I got sucked right into these characters' lives.
This starts out as a friend and family drama, but it became intertwined with some real insidious societal issues, both inside each family and more broadly in the town.
I do feel a tad unsatisfied with the ending but I can't put my finger on why.

Last day of July.
August will bring a new semester. Savoring these days where I can have lunch outside with a book.

I am 100 pages into the tagged book and enjoying it so far. It is culturally well-timed in it's examination of the pressures surrounding student achievement.

I‘m high on life right now, spending over a week at the lake. This book is fantastic, and there‘s some dope smoking going on amongst some of the characters. 😆Unfortunately, the uptight parents that steamroll their children are not the ones partaking. #feelsohigh #lilithjuly

Reviewsbylola I will sent it to you once my family reads it. I still need to send you Severance if @emilyhaldi ever reads it. 😆 @Cinfhen 5mo
Cinfhen Thanks so much, Steph 😘😘no rush on either book!!! 5mo

Is anyone else reading this #BOTM?

Lisawb I read a couple weeks ago - had it on pre-order. I really loved it, but, full disclosure, the author is a high school and Facebook friend of mine, so I might be biased. :) What do/did you think of it? 5mo
peacegypsy @Lisawb I‘m about 1/2 done and find it interesting and enjoyable. I work with this population of parents, so it feels good to have my experiences validated. Great book, thus far! 😊 5mo

My first #24in48 and I‘m almost finished with this one! Pretty good so far. I can‘t wait to see how it ends. 3 hours and 16 minutes into my readathon and about to take a nap. 💤

My #BOTM box came last Friday while we were out of town. That's the fastest it's shipped in well over a year! Super excited about these selections. I may have gone a little overboard...🤔🤷🏽‍♀️ #bookhaul #bookmail
