Rose That Grew from Concrete
Rose That Grew from Concrete | Tupac Shakur
Tupac Shakur's most intimate and honest thoughts were uncovered only after his death with the instant classic "The Rose That Grew from Concrete." "His talent was unbounded, a raw force that commanded attention and respect. His death was tragic -- a violent homage to the power of his voice. His legacy is indomitable -- remaining vibrant and alive." Here now, newly discovered, are Tupac's most honest and intimate thoughts conveyed through the pure art of poetry -- a mirror into his enigmatic life and its many contradictions. Written in his own hand at the age of nineteen, they embrace his spirit, his energy...and his ultimate message of hope.

“Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete? Proving nature's laws wrong, it learned to walk without having feet. Funny, it seems to by keeping it's dreams; it learned to breathe fresh air. Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else even cared.”

These poems reflect a driven, contemplative, loving, and insightful young man before his big rap career took off. He was obviously still growing into himself when he wrote these poems. They are heartbreaking, some amateur, sweet, and even naive, but always, he was thinking about the world around him and what justice meant. I wish he'd had the chance to say more.

What strikes hardest about Tupac Shakur's writing is how inescapably young he was, how heartbreaking it is, all over again, that such youth and promise was cut down too soon. Each poem is in here 2Xs - 1st as an image of the original scribble, complete with the illustrative doodles, misspellings, & abbreviations you would expect from a teenager's notebook, & then again as a typed poem. The juxtaposition is sharp and delightful.

All the stars ⭐️ I don‘t know a whole lot about Tupac, but he is an artist many of my students have told me to read about. With all 3 of our library‘s copies being lost I ordered my own from The Dock Bookshop for myself. Will continue to learn about this amazing human.

I loved each and every poem. I also loved that the original was entered for each. They were in his handwriting. Some had sketches that he drew when writing and corrections/changes he made too. ❤️

As a fan of Tupac, it was easy for me to love this book of his poems. I grew up listening to him and memorizing his lyrics. These words are much more private and authentic to his voice. A true artist and poet, this book reveals Tupac‘s struggles, hopes and dreams. Recommend for any fan of his as well of poetry.

As in any collection, some poems hit me harder than others. I particularly enjoyed the titular poem, and several of the poems that express similar themes of triumphing through struggles, as well as some of the poems which expressed more confusion and indecision. There were quite a few relationship/romance themed poems, which I enjoyed less, but again, you can't win them all.

This is a collection of poetry written by the late Tupac when he was 19 years old. I like some better than the others. Didn‘t like the ones about his relationship with girls (okay, he was 19) but I liked the ones that speaks of the need to survive and hope for a better tomorrow. The ones about motherhood and the one in memory of Vincent Van Gogh are good, too. Overall, recommended.

Ddzmini He was in an overall view a genius with words and he knew more then he wrote, wrote less then he knew, spoke less then he could have. 6y

Well known for being a talented artist/rapper and actor, but few people were aware of his poetry skills.

“It‘s a snapshot into the life of Tupac before he became 2Pac: Rap Superstar. It‘s unedited, having been copied straight from the lined notebooks Tupac wrote on..”

Honest, pure and touching! This book of poetry by the late great Tupac Shakur was published in 1999. With Pac's hand written poetry is on the left page & the typed version is on the right, the reader gets an intimate look at Tupac the poet. You can feel Pac's passion. This book covers a wide range of topics such as love, politics, death, his mother, and to my surprise he even wrote a couple of poems for Jada Pinkett-Smith.
