If you have an interest in comics, this book gives you an in-depth understanding of how an artist creates their art. While this didn't meet my needs, it was still a good read.

My #litsyrecipeswap package arrived earlier this week . . . while I was out of town at a library conference (shout-out to my mom for bringing my package into my condo and also for pet sitting my kitty). This package was well worth the wait! Thank you @Graciouswarriorprincess for this super fun pack of goodies! And thanks to @BennettBookworm for hosting!
I constantly recommend UNDERSTANDING COMICS to people who‘re new to the medium, so I figured it was about time I reread it. For the most part, it holds up and delivers some valuable insights, but I forgot how academic it gets. (It‘s conversational academia, but still.) McCloud assumes you‘ve got a decent number of critical tools at your disposal, and that you‘re willing to put in some work.
I‘m going to try and finish this up today. I am enjoying it just got distracted this week!
Well, this is fascinating. Extremely involved and mind bending, I‘d say this is quite an academic take on comics and their importance. I enjoyed it a lot, be aware it‘s not a short read, there‘s SO much in this. Really good for those who are passionate about this medium. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Brushing up on my comics theory for work. Not a bad way to spend a long weekend!
Happy #FreeComicBookDay!
Shout out to Ssalefish Comics in Winston-Salem, North Carolina!
@Riveted_Reader_Melissa finished my second book for the #nonfiction2019 challenge! An excellent discussion of what goes into comics and how to make the most use of them, based on the history of communication through visual media, from cave paintings and codexes to engravings and comic books.
Reading materials for my graphic novels class! Understanding Comics is an amazing book to learn what the different styles and basically the reason artist and writers do what they do from the space away from each panel to the different fonts. #litsyloveslibraries #libraryschool #gradschool
#TBRtemptation post 4! This book is a classic. Praised as a must-read by everyone from Gaiman to Spiegelman to Groening to Eisner. It's the seminal examination of comics art: its history, technical components, and cultural significance. Look between the panels, the lines, and the symbols. This book will explain (just about?) everything! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
Day one of #C2E2 done! Highlights: getting to be on a panel with creators of I Am Alfonso Jones and Kindred: Graphic Novel, having RL Stine, Raina Telgemeier, Gale Galligan, Leila Del Duca and Yehuda Mercado (all books tagged below) on our panels, and getting to hang with my #comics teacher buddies!

Only a couple more days until #comicthon! What's in your stack? I've got some library materials to poke at, a bunch of Wolverine one-shots to dip into, and a goodly selection of digital comics I got through Humble Bundles and should've read a looooooong time ago. I'd love to knock at least two of the latter off La TBR on Sunday!
It's been a few months since the last #comicthon (had to account for the holidays and the #LetsGetGraphicWeeklongMarathon), but IT'S BACK!
On Sunday, February 25th, you're invited to binge on comics with like-minded Littens. Whatever you love is welcome: trades, single issues, OGNS, manga, strips, webcomics... you name it! There's no minimum goal, either; just read comics, have fun, and share your progress on Litsy.

Catching up on #riotgrams! Day one: #shelfie
This bookshelf holds my unread #botm selections as well as unread comics. As you can see, it's currently spilling over a bit. 😶
See any favorites? What should I pick up next?
If you want a more in-depth (but still brief) discussion of the terrible, horrible thing where comics readers privilege writers over artists, Jay and Miles cover it within the first ten minutes of their latest episode. They also discuss the opposite phenomenon, which held sway throughout much of the 90s.

Although this book shows it‘s age occasionally (published in 1993), McCloud is witty and expansive and wonderfully enlightening on the storytelling process. And though the book is specific to comics, many of the insights can be applied to other storytelling mediums. 💡💡💡💡💡
I see a lot of Littens looking to try comics this year for challenges or general interest, and I want to offer two pieces of advice to grease the wheel:
1. Comics is a medium, not a genre. You're more likely to enjoy your first dip if you start with a genre you already love--and whatever that is, people've made comics in it. Ask around for recs!
2. UNDERSTANDING COMICS by Scott McCloud can help you learn comics' visual language. You want it.
I started a new #bookclub this month (woohoo!) and it‘s all about the #comics :)
Our first pick is Scott McCloud‘s Understanding Comics, which seems like a solid place to start discussing the medium. Originally printed in 1993, McCloud mentions all the comics in print BACK THEN would take a small army to keep on top of. Well how about 24 years later? There‘s a tsunami of titles out there to explore.
Hey #geekygraphicnovelswap friends! @xicanti is hosting another #comicthon this month where we...read a lot of comics. I had a lot of fun devoting a day to it in September. Y'all should join in!
Friends, I think it's about time we declared a November #comicthon!
What's a #comicthon, you ask? A casual, one-day, comics-focused readathon! There are no targets to hit and no limits on the sorts of comics you can read. Everything's welcome: single issues, trade collections, manga, webcomics, comic strips, original graphic novels & nonfiction... whatever you love, and in whatever amount fits your schedule.
I hope you'll join us on the 26th!
Kicking off the week with a fun new read. What are you hoping to read this week?
Okay, friends, I'm bringing #comicthon back--this time with a full week's notice!
Next Sunday, September 24, I'll be reading as many comics as I can cram into my eyeballs, and I'd love for y'all to join me.
Comics of all sorts are welcome: single issues, trade collections, OGNs, manga, webcomics... whatever floats your sequential graphic story-loving boat! #comics
Yup. Been there. 😆
A panel from Tara Booth's How To Be Alive http://retrofit.storenvy.com/products/20671676-how-to-be-alive-by-tara-booth
My favourite panel in this whole comic is the opening page. Love it!

The title says it all. Learn about comics. There is more than meets the eye a some what trite saying, but really true none the less. A clever show and tell about the mechanics and history of graphic storytelling.
Book one of six on my syllabus is done! McCloud's love of the comics medium is as infectious as his knowledge is comprehensive. PS I love that my bookmark (from an event for I Am Not Your Negro) perfectly lines up with the stripe of pull quotes.
I made myself a self-imposed syllabus of things I need to read while begin creating my own webcomic.
Re-re-rereading this essential primer on the art and theory that goes into good comics in preparation of writing my own webcomic!
#riotgrams Day 10: #comics!! I have these from all the research I did for the comics museum I designed for school (interior design). Great book.
I'm taking a comics readers advisory class in my MLIS program, and we choose our own comics! So send any and all recommendations my way!
I'll be off Litsy for a while, Littens. I need a day or to fully shake of my depression which has been lifting. That being said, I'm going to indulge in single issue comics and I don't have trades yet or the ability to review single issue comics on Litsy. I know I'm on and off but I'm trying to be better about communicating to those who follow me because I truly am grateful to you for the follows!
Even though we don't live there anymore -- it's been two years since we moved away-- I must do a shout-out for Colorado Springs' fabulous used bookstore, Hooked on Books. My son loved this place too, as their manga/graphic novel section was also amazing. They've since opened a second store w/the same name in downtown CS, and I'm sure it's worth checking out too. I miss this #getindie bookstore! P.S 😱how young he looks at this, our last visit!
One of the best explanations of the medium of comics. It thoroughly explores the form and function of graphic narratives from a historical and multicultural standpoint.
